Florida has long been known as a retirement destination for seniors. With the state’s comfortable tropical climate and reasonable cost of living, it’s no wonder so many prefer to call Florida home during their golden years. In fact, more than 20% of the state’s 21,477,737 residents are aged 65 and older.
Independent living facilities provide seniors who are capable of caring for themselves with limited support as they age. In independent living communities, residents are typically provided with services such as housekeeping, meals and social activities while continuing to enjoy the freedom of an active, independent lifestyle. In Florida, the average cost of independent living is about $2,405 per month.
This guide covers more about the cost of independent living in Florida and surrounding states. It also provides information about how seniors can pay for independent living, as well as free resources that are available to seniors throughout the state
The Cost of Independent Living in Florida
Note: Independent Living focuses on active social lives without supportive care and generally costs less than Assisted Living by 30-40%. Since there aren’t any authoritative reports available for Independent Living, we established an estimated cost by subtracting 35% from the average cost of Assisted Living as posted in the 2021 Genworth Financial Cost of Care Survey.
Seniors in the Sunshine State pay less for Independent Living compared to the national average, about $325 less per month. However, the average costs in all the surrounding states are lower than in Florida. Compared to Florida, the average costs of Independent Living are less in Mississippi by $325, in Alabama by $322, in Georgia by $302 and in South Carolina by $252. Average costs are closest in Louisiana where they’re still lower by $164.
Within the state, cities have vastly different Independent Living costs. Down south, Miami’s average cost of Independent Living is $2,850 while Naples is $3,445. Seniors in the panhandle pay an average of $2,810 in Pensacola. On the Gulf side of Florida, Tampa offers an average cost of $2,178, while Orlando mirrors the state average of $2,600.
Seniors needing a higher level of care than they’d receive in Independent Living may want to consider other senior care options. Adult Day Health Care offers a low level of care with the lowest average cost at $1,517 per month. Assisted Living offers care in a residential setting at an average cost of $4,000. Seniors can also opt to receive care at home with an average cost of $4,767 for either In-Home Care or Home Health Care. Nursing Home Care has the highest cost but offers the highest level of care with semiprivate rooms averaging $8,654 and private rooms averaging $9,627.

Can You Use Medicare or Medicaid to Pay for Independent Living in Florida?
Unfortunately, you cannot use Medicaid and Medicare to help pay the monthly fee for residing in an Independent Living community. For seniors who need help with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), there may be financial assistance programs available to help cover the cost of care in Independent Living. For more information about financial assistance for those who need a higher level of care, read our guide to Assisted Living in Florida.
Read on for more information about using alternative means to make Independent Living more affordable, such as retirement funds, the sale of a home, etc.

I went to The Rose Garden of Orlando. The lady who did the tour she’s a sweetheart. It was clean and all the residents were there. There weren’t many as they were having their outing that day, the residents were all very nice and happy. They all seemed in really good spirits. The facility, they were in the process of updating it. But you can see where they’ve kept up with the community. The staff seemed friendly. They have a lot of activities. They were very organized. They had a large porch area, they had an atrium area where it was like a garden. So they had a couple of outdoor areas. It’s not a lot, but they had places where they could go and be outside, and still be safe and in comfort, not in the heat sweating it out. They had a ballroom where they throw balls and parties monthly, which I thought was kind of cool. They have a library, a game room, and they have a bar there for the residents. It used to be a hotel, they took and remodeled, so all the rooms are nice and spacious. They have private rooms, even the shared rooms which were semi-private were nice.

Westminster Towers Orlando is amazing. It’s beautiful. There are so many activities and they are so encouraging. My dad doesn’t feel left out. The food is great. He has a 10th-floor room that overlooks the skyline of Orlando and the Lake Lucerne fountain. It just couldn’t be any better. He has a one-bedroom apartment and it’s got a kitchen, a huge pantry, and a nice living room. It’s just lovely. There are also laundry facilities on the floor for the units that don’t have washer-dryers in their rooms.
Their calendar is full. Every time dad has something going on. I went to a yoga class with him today. They have religious things, artistic things, a concert almost every weekend with really fine musicians, and movie nights. It’s a packed schedule.
The rent includes one meal a day and then you can add on as you wish. It’s a cashless plan, so you use a fob to either pay for your guests or to credit your account for your meal, or when you go to the beautician, the barber, or their little general store. They got a computer center, a beautiful gym, and a heated outdoor pool as well. The staff is so kind and helpful.

Magnolia Pointe itself was nice. However, I thought the area was kind of dilapidated because most of the houses and buildings around were all boarded up, and the pool needed cleaning, though nobody would be using the pool this time of year. Everything else was nice and clean, and it was very cheap, but the area that we saw was quite depressing. The lady that I dealt with was very nice. She couldn’t show us the apartments, but she showed us around the complex and everything. I wasn’t able to get inside any of the apartments because she didn’t have one at that moment to show me. There was a dining area where residents can gather together if they don’t want to cook. They have all their cooking facilities in their own apartments, but supposing they don’t want to cook, they can come down in the dining area and have meals there. She said they arrange activities to take them out like to the banks, the library, and stuff like that. They have senior citizens’ activities and senior groups which are held certain times of the week, especially for those who can’t drive. I would give it about three stars, and that’s mainly because of the area and the pool. Everything else was nice and clean, and the person who I spoke to was really nice.

It’s the same facility, what you do is graduate in services. If you’re in there just as a senior living and you start needing a little medical help, taking your medication, and showering and this type of thing, you stay right in the same room. You don’t have to change rooms and all of this kind of stuff and sections of buildings or anything, you just get more attention from staff that is assigned to do things like that. They have a heated pool, and all the amenities right there.

The Grove at Trelago was nice and the food was good, but the apartments were too small. It’s terrific, the ambience, the amenities, the swimming pool, the gardens, and the food. The only thing was that the apartments were too small for us. For other people, they may be OK. They have card rooms and a movie theater. The library was very small and inadequate.

The environment at Florida Living Retirement is very good. The accommodation is outstanding. They take care of your needs. You rent the apartment and when you first move in they put in new carpeting or new floor which ever you prefer. They don’t want you to fix things, you just need to call them and they will do it for you. The apartments have their own stove and refrigerator so you can cook if you like or you can eat in the dining room. They take you to the doctor when you need to. Once a week, they take you to the grocery store which was nearby.

My mother is in independent living at Allegro. She has been there for two months now, and it’s excellent. They offer everything we ask for and more, so we’re very pleased. The staff is excellent. They have apartments there. My mother has selected an apartment, but they also have studios. Her apartment has a beautiful view of the pool, the golf course and the lake, so it’s perfect. They have different rooms for everybody. They have dining rooms, activities, arts and crafts, a full-blown theater, transportation to shopping areas, and there’s a doctor on Wednesdays. There’s a menu in their dining room, which is outstanding. If you don’t want to go to the dining room, they deliver it to your room, all you have to do is call. It’s superb, it’s great. It’s like a Ritz Carlton Hotel. They clean the room once a week. They have a spa, an exercise room, a sauna, a beautiful library, and a beauty shop. I haven’t tried the meals, but my mother is very happy with it.
