Due to a warm and dry climate that lasts throughout the year, Phoenix is a popular destination for seniors. This pleasant climate is complemented by beautiful nearby scenery, including the breathtaking Grand Canyon, as well as world-class attractions and amenities offered by the sixth-largest city in the nation. For these reasons and more, 1 out of 10 people in Phoenix is over the age of 65.

Many quality home care agencies are available to seniors in Phoenix who wish to age in place rather than move to an assisted living facility. These agencies charge an average of about $25 per hour according to Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care Survey. The average yearly cost, at 44 hours per week, is the same for both in-home care and home health care at $57,200. Care in Phoenix is somewhat more expensive than the United States average of $21 per hour for in-home care and $22 per hour for home health care.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Phoenix area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Phoenix Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Phoenix:

Adult Day Health Center Respite Scholarship Program

Address: 4120 North 20th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85016
Phone: (602) 441-4900

Provided at three different locations in Phoenix, this program provides free respite for unpaid caregivers who live full time with the person they’re helping. This is only available to caregivers, and the seniors they care for, who have never received aid from any federal program related to respite. Respite is provided at local Adult Day Health Centers where seniors can enjoy a variety of safe and educational activities.

Rebuilding Together

Address: 1826 W. Broadway Road, #16, Mesa, Arizona 85202
Phone: (480) 774-0237

Rebuilding Together for the Valley of the Sun offers free home modification services so that seniors in Phoenix can reside safely within their own homes or rental units. Applicants must earn 50% or less of the median income for Maricopa County. Written permission from property managers is required for renters. Applicants can expect the review process to last three to four weeks. All work is performed by volunteers, and there is no warranty on service.

City of Phoenix Older Adult Programs

Address: 200 W. Washington Street, Phoenix, AZ 85003
Phone: (602) 262-6011

Phoenix has 15 different senior centers located throughout the city that provide a variety of aging in place services. These include home-delivered meals, home repairs and information about senior discounts. They also offer social, recreational and educational opportunities.

Weatherization Assistance Program

Address: 200 W. Washington Street, Fourth Floor, Phoenix, AZ 85003
Phone: (602) 534-4444

The Phoenix Neighborhood Services Department helps senior homeowners make weatherization improvements for more efficient heating and cooling. Services can include repairing or replacing heating or cooling systems, sealing air leaks, testing for carbon monoxide and gas and ensuring proper insulation. Homeowners must not have any extraordinary liens and encumbrances and renters must get written permission from landlords. The property needs to be accessible and in compliance with all city codes and ordinances.

Senior Property Valuation Protection

Address: 301 W Jefferson Street, Phoenix, AZ 85003
Phone: (602) 506-3406

While there is no way to get a complete exemption from property taxes in Phoenix, the state does offer a tax deferral for certain eligible seniors. Applicants must be aged 65 or over, the owner of their primary residence for at least two years and not have an income exceeding $37,008 for a single owner or $46,260 for two or more owners. Seniors will need to provide their federal tax returns in their applications.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
