Financial Assistance for Home Care in Miami, FL

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.

Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-Term Care Insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living.Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the difference between in-home care and home health care?

In-home care and home health care share many of the same functions but home health care is aimed at seniors who need medical assistance. In-home care helps seniors with activities of daily living, such as grooming, eating, buying groceries, doing laundry and other household chores. Home health care also includes assistance with medical services such as medication management, wound care, administering IV drips and physical therapy. Most home health care is provided by a medical professional, such as a registered nurse.

What Is the average cost for in-home elderly care in Miami, Florida?

The Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020 lists the average monthly cost of in-home care for seniors in Miami at $3,623 a month. This figure is based on an average of 44 hours a week at $19 an hour. Prices vary depending upon the hours of numbers for which you need care.

How do you pay for senior care at home?

In-home care can be paid for in a variety of ways. Seniors can pay for it out-of-pocket through 401(k)s, pension plans, reverse mortgages or investments. Programs from the Department of Elder Affairs may help low-income seniors pay for ADLs. Senior veterans may be eligible for in-home benefits available from the federal Veterans Administration.

Who is eligible for the Veterans’ home care program?

Honorably discharged veterans are eligible for in-home care benefits available from the federal Veterans Administration. In Florida, honorably discharged veterans or their survivors are eligible for both state homestead exemptions on their properties as well as local county senior exemptions if they are aged 65 and older and are 10%-90% disabled.

Assisted living homes vs. home care: how to decide?

Many seniors and their caregivers must decide whether to remain in their homes and age in place or to move into an assisted living facility. The answer to the question revolves around several important issues: 1) How healthy is the senior? 2) What is their financial situation? 3) What kind of in-home care does a senior require? 4) Does the senior live alone, and does this leave them feeling lonely or isolated? 5) How many available resources are there in the community for a senior who wishes to age in place?
