Financial Assistance for Home Care in Miami, FL

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.

  • Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-Term Care Insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
  • Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
  • Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
  • Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living.Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
  • Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I look for in a good home care agency near me in Miami?

Choosing a good home care agency is essential to ensure the health and safety of seniors who depend on caregivers for assistance. Start by asking for recommendations from trusted sources who’ve used home care agencies. Compare the services offered by several recommended agencies and do background checks. Read reviews to determine satisfaction among previous clients. Interview each agency and determine what type of qualifications it requires of its staff and the background checks it performs. Finally, determine if an agency can meet required home care needs within a given budget and have caregivers available when needed.

What is the average cost of in-home elderly care in Miami?

Miami’s average home care cost is lower than the state average and several nearby cities. According to the 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, the average cost of in-home elderly care in Miami is $4,195 per month based on 44 hours of care provided weekly. This monthly rate works out to about $1,049 per week or $24 per hour. However, the actual amount can vary by home care agency.

What types of services can a home care agency in Miami provide?

Home care agencies in Miami provide an array of non-medical services that allow clients to remain in their homes safely. Non-medical home care includes companionship and assistance with activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living. ADLs include everyday personal care tasks like dressing, grooming, bathing and maintaining continence. IADLS are activities that help individuals remain independent, such as managing finances, cooking, cleaning and shopping. Alternately, home health care agencies must be licensed to provide in-home skilled nursing services.

Can you write off in-home elderly care?

According to IRS Publication 502, in-home elderly care may be written off if services are connected with caring for the patient’s condition, such as bathing and grooming. Other long-term care services, including personal care services, may also qualify for a write-off if the person can’t perform at least two activities of daily living without substantial assistance. However, household chore services can’t be written off.

Assisted living homes vs. home care: how to decide?

Deciding between assisted living and home care hinges on personal preference and budget. Seniors wanting to remain in their homes prefer home care because assisted living requires moving to a residential environment with several other older adults. Regarding budget, assisted living in Miami, Florida, is only about $200 more than home care and costs the same as home health care. However, assisted living is more all-inclusive, with rent, utilities and meals generally combined into one cost. However, seniors may still pay rent or a mortgage and must pay for meals and utilities when opting for home care.
