For seniors, New York City is a great place to live. Bankrate recently ranked it 18th on its list of the best large cities for retirees, with high marks for the low crime rate, excellent public transportation and numerous cultural attractions. The Genworth 2018 Cost of Care Survey revealed that the city’s seniors pay an average of $4,576 per month for homemaker services and $4,767 per month for home health aides. The national average monthly costs for these services are $4,004 and $4,195, respectively. These figures are based on 44 hours of care per week.

New York Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in New York:

New York Foundation for Senior Citizens

This nonprofit, nonsectarian organization provides several services to seniors throughout New York City. Its services include subsidized housing, case management and home safety audits. The organization also offers a free transportation service, Project CART, that takes seniors to destinations around the city. For seniors who aren’t eligible for Medicaid, the organization offers a low-cost respite care program.

Citymeals on Wheels is a nonprofit organization that delivers weekend and holiday meals to homebound seniors. It also operates a mobile food pantry that provides shelf-stable foods, such as cereal and canned fruit, to seniors. In addition to its meal programs, the organization offers companionship through the Friendly Visiting program. Volunteers are matched with seniors based on common interests, and once they’re matched, volunteers have a six-month commitment.

Since 1998, this nonprofit organization has helped New York City seniors repair and modify their homes. It provides home repair services for low-income seniors. These services include performing routine maintenance and rebuilding after disasters. The organization also offers accessibility modifications for low-income seniors. Wheelchair ramps, handrails and ADA-compliant bathrooms are some of the modifications the organization may provide.

New York City Department for the Aging

This Office for the Aging connects seniors with case-management agencies that can help them remain in their homes. These agencies may provide personal care, housekeeping, home-delivered meals and other services. The cost of these services is determined on a sliding scale, and depending on a senior’s income, they may be asked to make contributions.

The Parodneck Foundation is a nonprofit organization that helps New York City seniors improve their living conditions and avoid foreclosure.
