Orlando is known as the home of Walt Disney World, but this Floridian city has a lot more to offer senior citizens besides the theme parks. Seniors who enjoy golf, a variety of shopping venues and a choice of dining options will love Orlando. The warm, humid climate makes this a popular retirement area for seniors looking to escape the cold winters in the northern parts of the country.

Orlando has a number of quality healthcare programs and benefits available for its senior citizens. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2019, the average cost of homemaker services is $4,004 per month and the average cost of home health aide services is $4,242 per month. Both services cost less in Orlando than the national average, which is $4,290 for homemaker services and $4,385 for home health aide services.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Orlando area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Orlando Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Orlando:

Seniors First

Address: 5395 LB McLeod Road, Orlando, FL 32811
Phone Number: (407) 292-0177

Seniors First is a nonprofit organization that provides a variety of services to help seniors over the age of 60 to live at home as long as possible. The program is run by volunteers and they are known for their Meals on Wheels deliveries to seniors with limited means in the Orange County area. Additional services provided by the program include supplying medical equipment such as wheelchairs and beds, acting as a public guardian for incapacitated seniors and offering in-home care services.

Weatherization Assistance Program

Address: 107 East Madison Street, Caldwell Building, Tallahassee, Florida 32399
Phone Number: (850) 245-7105

This program is funded by the U.S Department of Energy and provides a range of home energy efficiency solutions to low-income households in the State of Florida. Priority is given to senior citizens and those with disabilities. Those that receive Supplemental Security Income automatically qualify for the program. Services offered by the program include basic repairs to homes to make them weatherproof, insulation,  water heater wraps and weather stripping.

Senior Centers

Address: 4801 W. Colonial Dr. Orlando, FL 32808
Phone Number: (407) 836-6200

The Department of Parks and Recreation runs two senior centers in Orlando where residents over the age of 60 can take part in recreational and social activities. There is no charge for attending any of the activities on offer, however, there is an annual $10 membership fee which gives members access to everything on offer at the center and includes a photo ID badge. Activities offered include arts and crafts, musical entertainment, fitness classes and social events. Each center has a supervised fitness center with a variety of workout machines and weights.

Education Classes

Address: Not Listed
Phone Number: (407) 835-7323

The Orange County Library System offers free or small fee educational classes to senior citizens throughout the Orlando area. Classes can be done in-person for social interaction or online if seniors are unable to leave their homes. Some of the classes taught include languages, computer skills, internet skills, sewing and arts and crafts. The classes are open to all age groups but are a popular option for seniors wanting to learn new skills.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
