Financial Assistance for Home Care in Orlando, FL

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.

  • Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-Term Care Insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
  • Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
  • Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
  • Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living.Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
  • Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you pay for senior care at home?

Seniors and their families can find many options to pay for in-home care in Orlando. Sometimes families work out collective sibling agreements that allow some family members to pay others for senior care in a senior’s home. A reverse mortgage can also work well, and annuities or Medicare are other options to cover the costs of in-home care.

What is the average cost for in-home elderly care in Orlando?

The data in the 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey indicates seniors in Orlando pay an average of $4,767 for in-home care services, including home health care services when they need additional health care from a trained professional. That breaks down to $25 an hour if a senior receives 44 hours of help a week. This is the same average as the state of Florida, but it is about $1 less per hour than the national average.

What types of services can a home care agency in Orlando provide?

One benefit of choosing home care is agencies will create care plans based on each senior’s needs. Sometimes this is just a few hours of companionship and basic housework, while sometimes, a senior requires extensive help with daily living tasks, such as hygiene and food preparation. In-home caregivers may provide respite for primary caregivers, help with running errands or other transportation needs, work with medication management and check a senior’s blood pressure.

What is a home care assessment?

To provide personalized care to seniors in their own homes, home care agencies will perform an assessment. The assessment analyzes a senior’s abilities and needs. It will talk about the home itself and whether it poses any risks to the senior, such as fall hazards. Finally, the assessment will talk to the family or the senior about how to best provide care and support or modify the home to protect the senior and encourage independence.

Which factor is most critical to effective home care?

While the types of services provided are important to consider, families usually find quite a bit of similarity between the services of one home care agency and the next. Certification from a group like the National Association of Home Care and Hospice is one of the most important things to look for when choosing a home care agency, as this certification shows that the agency follows the current recommendations for senior safety and health. Also, look for training protocols for the care providers.
