Home to 280,800 residents and a handful of world-class theme parks, Orlando is Florida’s fourth-largest city and one of its premier vacation destinations. The community is home to 28,600 senior citizens who represent just over 10% of residents. Despite the area’s youthful population, Orlando is an excellent location for older adults. The community has a comfortable climate with hot summers and mild winters. Health care costs are slightly below average, and residents have access to a wide variety of medical facilities.
Seniors in Orlando who need personal assistance on a regular basis can turn to nursing homes, assisted living facilities or home care agencies. Nursing homes are suitable for individuals with complex health conditions that require 24-hour monitoring. A semiprivate room in Orlando costs $9,125 per month, which is higher than the state and national medians. Assisted living facilities offer personal assistance and help managing medications at a significantly lower cost, and home care agencies provide similar services on a flexible schedule depending on the client’s individual needs.
This guide takes a look at nursing home costs in Orlando, and offers resources that can or allow you to remain at home longer and help you find and pay for care.

My girlfriend was in rehab for two weeks at the Westminster Towers in downtown Orlando, and it was really nice. The staff, the nurses, and everybody were just accommodating. It was just really a nice place.
I didn’t go into all the rooms, but I was able to see the lobby area to go to the rehab part, and it was very nice there.
She was at a bad place in her life at that time. She had been in a coma for months. She had a bad surgery, so she was not in a good state of mind, and she was very depressed. I was there pretty much every day, and I dealt with the nurses and staff. They really went out of their way to make her feel comfortable. The facility was very clean.

Mom has settled in and really loves the staff and attention she receives. There will come a time in all families when the choice to make about our loved ones care will need to be made the people at Guardian will listen and offer advice without pressure . My husband has been in the Life Care Center of Orlando, and so far we have been very pleased. The people working there respond quickly, and they answer all my questions. They were supportive when we made the change, and they have done everything right. They have taken care of him and have gone out of their way to make sure he is comfortable and that gets the care that he needs. Right now, they have gotten him on a special diet, so his food is kind of mushy. I understand that when he gets regular food he loves it, but the mushy food he is not so thrilled about.
My husband got another person with him in his room, but he has plenty of room. It’s also the cleanest place I’ve been in since we started looking at places. I like that the halls are very wide and that there is room for more than one person to pass through, so it’s great. They have just re-opened from being quarantined.
The staff has been very forthcoming. They answer my questions, they call me, and they give me updates. When my husband had a concern, he talked to the nurse. They have been great. I’ve gotten all the answers I’ve been looking for when I talk to them. The reason he moved there was because he needed more care than he could get in assisted living, and they have given him that care. Right now, he is in his first 100 days of Medicare, and we are in the process of applying for Medicaid.

I really like Guardian Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The residents always come first. You can tell that they care about them. My dad has bounced back and is recovering now very well. They administer his medications and assist him with his bathing. He’s happy.
He is a very picky eater and only trusts his own cooking, but he is enjoying the food there. It is very flavorful and very well put together. The place is also clean. I’ve never seen the place dirty at all. The staff is very, very polite, too. There is a young lady from the administration office that goes to see him every day. So, my experience has been excellent. It was totally more than what I expected.

It was a nightmare. when we arrived her medication due that day was not given until late, they said a new nurse was on!!!! Patients donot have phones in room, main number never answers, very poor communication. After she arrived it was shut down due to COVID. She continued to decline, was put on oxgyen, was transported to her personal heart Dr. which perscibed medication, went back to Delaney, kept getting worse. Her Heart Dr. and his nurse were trying to dicuss this her situation with the Dr. and a nurse at Delaney, who lied to us and said he had spoken with heart Dr. THIS NEVER HAPPENED. Her Dr. was appalled of this lie. Thankfully her heart Dr. sent her to hospital she had to be hydrated, oxygen (which Delaney said she no longer needed) and all new medication. My motherinlaw WALKED into Delaney, had to leave Delaney in ambulance unable to walk!! Thankfully she went to another rehab and is home doing well. Don’t know what is going on there but this place needs to be investigated. We are now working on this, due to the fact we almost lost her. We would never recommend this place,Horrible.

I had to physically go to the place, corner the nurse and find out what was going on with my mother medically. I would find out that tests were ordered on a Thursday, but not conducted until Tuesday of the following week.
This is, bar none, the worst facility I have ever dealt with and I regret allowing my family member to spend a single day there.

I would be less worried if on nights/weekends calls were answered by staff. This is an ongoing problem with making calls during this time period as well as holidays. Nurses Maria, Marilyn and David are very professional and understanding of my father’s condition. A special thanks to Norma Alvarez (or Alvarado) his wound care nurse since last September. She is on top of his wound care and a true professional. Keisha, Deana, and Angelica are always so helpful and welcoming. My father has been here a few years and they have become family. It’s not perfect here, needs a lot, lot of upgrading. Not too much communication among staff as patient care is concerned. But we constantly visit and know he is being cared for in a good way. It’s better than a few other facilities that I know of.

Nursing Home Costs in Orlando, Florida
Seniors in Orlando typically pay $9,125 per month for a semiprivate room and $9,703 for a private room in a nursing home.
The Cost of Nursing Home Care in Nearby Cities
The average cost of skilled nursing in the Orlando metropolitan area is $456 higher than the state median and $1,369 higher than the U.S. median. However, rates are typical for Central Florida. Monthly costs are slightly below the state median in Lakeland, which represents a savings of $487 per month compared to Orlando, and seniors in The Villages pay $152 less per month. Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Orlando, Florida
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
