Additionally, seniors who enjoy dining out can choose from thousands of options, including multiple Michelin-starred restaurants. Other senior-friendly activities offered by the city include tours and cruises, numerous museums and volunteering opportunities. Living in Chicago makes it easy to access notable health care facilities, including Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Rush University Medical Center, which have been highly rated.
The Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2019 reports that costs for senior care in Chicago run a bit higher than average, coming in at $4,767 per month for home health aide services and $4,763 for homemaker services. Nationally, the average costs for those services are $4,385 and $4,290 per month, respectively.
At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Chicago area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

My dad just passed at the age of 97. Home Instead Senior Care cared for my dad three hours of day, 5 x a week. Care included getting him out of bed, dressing, applying lotion and wraps on his legs daily and showering. The family lived an hour a way mily and we had a peace of mind that dad was well care for. We were kept in the loop if caretakers were late or if there had to be a substitute. Interactions were always professional. The front line caretakers are caring and scompassionate. The apartment was consistently tidy and organized. The management staff is equally compassionate and empathetic. My brother and I are grateful for the care my dad received by the Home Instead Elk Grove Village staff.

Home Instead (Skokie, IL) has been wonderful through my now 91-year old father’s tenure with them. The relationship began in 2016 with 4-8 hours a day after Dad got out of rehab following a UTI infection. In 2020, that care quickly shifted to 24×7 after a UTI-triggered hospitalization that had Dad coming home bedridden and with a diminished self-care capacity. We are especially appreciative of the terrific responsiveness and accommodation Karen and Home Instead demonstrated during the swiftly changing needs of those post-hospitalization months. Home Instead “stepped up” beautifully and allowed everyone to breathe easier. The change in care is simply a shift based on Dad’s changed needs and the family’s goals. I can strongly recommend Home Instead.

Our two caregivers make up a cohesive team. They are very well matched and make my life easier. The main purpose is caregiving to my husband. One of them likes to cook, and the other one likes to clean, so they make a good team that way. They also provide companionship, bathing and dressing him, and giving his medication. I like the way that they picked out the caregivers to match the patients. They bring them for interviews with me, so that they can see the home in which we live. Then the caregiver determines whether they want to work there as well as me determining whether I want them to work. I’m satisfied. I picked out Home Instead based on the reviews in Caring.com.

I first engaged Home Instead in September 2017 to provide caregiving services for my now 91-year-old mother for four hours a day. Throughout the past four years, both my mother and I have found the agency to be extremely professional, responsive and attentive to my mother’s needs. The caregivers that the agency has provided are generally diligent and reliable. I have also been impressed that the agency has managed to continue to provide uninterrupted services throughout the pandemic, and has clearly thought through how best to keep its caregivers and their clients safe. We have just had to terminate the relationship because my mother has moved into a nursing facility, but otherwise would have continued to use the agency for the foreseeable future.

We had the absolute pleasure of working with Home and Hearth for 7 months. My mom was diagnosed with mild Alzheimer’s disease and it was no longer advisable for her to drive. We met with Teresa who was extremely knowledgeable, professional and patient with all of our questions. She explained all of the services and care that H&H has to offer so we started with just driving assistance to take my mom to work out at Curves 3 times a week. Teresa set us up with an AMAZING caregiver Kortney!. She was MUCH more than a driver, she instantly bonded with my mom because of her warm, caring and comfortable personality.
Then….the pandemic hit and the gyms closed. Once it was safe, Kortney came over just to be with my mom. She did puzzles, exercises, walks and just talked and made my mom feel good during a difficult time. She always volunteered to much more like housework, bathing, etc. but those services were not yet needed. My mom who is moving to VA to live with my sister will miss Kortney very much. The good news is that she is available to make a difference in someone else’s life. We cannot thank Teresa and Kortney enough for making a difficult decision so incredibly easy and the right decision!!!!

At Living Spring Home Care Services, our mission is to improve the health and quality of life of seniors and adults with disabilities as we serve their needs with dignity, respect, responsiveness, and compassion by providing professional home care services.
<p></p>
Ever since Living Spring Services | Home Care has been in business, we have primarily grown from the positive feedback of our clients and families. Clients consistently site our hyper-personalized and proactive approach as reasons that we exceed their expectations. Our business continues to grow as clients increase hours of services for themselves and recommend us to friends, family, and neighbors. We are able to provide services for as little as a few hours a day all the way up to 24-hour care – and the flexibility to adjust hours quickly as needs change. Recognizing that everyone’s situation is different, we have clients who use our services for the long term as well as clients who benefit from our services for the short term, including while they are in an acute or skilled setting, transitioning from home to a community and vice versa or simply getting to and from appointments.
<p></p>
Our caregivers are Living Spring Services employees; we do not contract with outside agencies. This ensures that our caregivers are screened, trained, and held accountable, to our quality standards. We only hire caregivers with experience and our detailed interview process helps us to know each caregiver’s level of expertise in each of the specific aspects of services that are available to our clients. This level of detail helps to ensure that we are able to match the skills of our caregivers to the needs of our clients. For example, one of the questions we ask our potential caregivers is their level of knowledge and experience in choosing food/menu items and cooking in compliance with a diabetic diet. Knowing this enables us to match a caregiver with a client who is diabetic and benefits from assistance in choosing appropriately from a menu as well as grocery shopping and meal preparation services. We also ask screening questions related to our caregivers’ interests and hobbies so that we can match those with a client’s. We do this because we know having a common interest or experience gives our caregivers additional tools to help keep their clients active and engaged. Caregivers are provided with the care plans prior to meeting their clients so that they are best prepared and to help ensure a positive experience for our clients and families. Any client change in condition or updates are communicated between our caregivers and leadership team in real time both electronically and verbally and are reflected in the care plan.
<p></p>
We have a large enough pool of caregivers to be able to start care within a few hours of receiving a referral. Our Care Manager also has a wealth of hands-on experience as a Case Manager and provides hands-on caregiver training in clients’ homes to help ensure we are providing the highest quality service with the latest techniques and resources. Our Care Manager, also has a vested interest in the health and well-being of all of our clients. She visits each client in their home, wherever that might be, to start care for all new clients. This includes our Transitions Visits where new clients are introduced to their caregivers, care plans are reviewed and confirmed, and expectations are clearly defined. She continues to visit each client regularly thereafter and review caregiver charting to help ensure that each client is getting the right amount of care and service for them at any given time.
<p></p>
Our streamlined process is designed with efficiency and open communication in mind. One call to our main number and our team jumps into action. Families, and your staff, have the peace of mind of knowing that we take ownership of getting services put into place. Our attention to detail helps ensure a smooth transition and positive experience for our clients, families, and team members. Our caregivers chart hourly and are trained to report significant changes immediately. In addition to our communication protocols, we ask for your preferred methods of communication so that we make sure your team has the information they need in a timely manner. As partners, our goal is to ensure that our clients and residents are receiving the care and services from Living Spring Services that they need and that we are coordinating efforts with your team members as well as other involved providers.

We hired Seniors Helping Seniors Chicago. They do whatever you want them to do. They could drive you if you want them to drive you some place. They can also help you cook, do light housekeeping, or help you get dressed and so forth. I need them right now for myself, to cook. On one day the caregiver comes in and cook meals for the week. The caregiver that comes in is great. I chose them because you didn’t have to commit to 4 hours a day, you could do it 2 hours a day or once a week if you want. That was a nice flexible approach that I liked. The communication with the agency is good and easy.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
