"This community is the same as the other facility I visited. The rooms were homey. As for activities, the residents look at questions on a TV screen, and they have to decide which choice is the correct answer. If they get the right answer, then they get a star, and if it’s the wrong answer, they have to rethink it. It is like a memory-type thing. They have a small grocery store there, too. "

"I've chosen Palagio Senior Living for my father. It's very clean and run very professionally. The rooms were exactly what we thought was the best value for the price. We like the layouts, the view from the window that he has, the other amenities that were close to him, and the fact that rehab was on the same floor down the hall. They have nice gathering areas, a movie-theater type thing for seniors if they want to watch movies, and a courtyard where they can get out into the sun. In addition, it's all accessible with no steps anywhere in the facility. Depending on what level he needs -- if he needs daily care or hourly care, shower care, dressing care, or those kinds of things -- those are things they would add on price-wise. Because he's not a threat to himself or a threat to leave the building, he's not in the memory care area where they have preventative measures so people can't wander off. The staff is very professional, very helpful, accommodating, and willing to work as I discuss things with them. I'm spending his money so I needed them to be competitive, and they were willing to negotiate on some pricing that I was able to lock in for a couple of years. That's important so I can form a budget. On the nursing side, they're first class. The director of nursing got all the information from the rehab center, although it was misleading information as we found out when he got here. But she worked back and forth with them to make sure that the level of care is ready for him, which was supposed to be today. But because the rehab shipped him here with a seriously infected wound on his foot, he's in the hospital going back to rehab. So it'll be a couple of weeks before they can get him into the new apartment, but they've been accommodating on that as well. It's brand new, it's less than a year old, and the layout is terrific. It's very easily accessible for people with walkers or electric wheelchairs. So far, we like what we're seeing. There were others we've visited but for the price, they weren't competitive. I've been to the facility five times now and walked around, and they've showed me the rooms on all five occasions."

"Seagrass Village of Fleming Island is a very nice place. I chose that one because in the little area my father can go in and out by himself when he is able. The other place that I looked at, they had to take him out to the little area. I know he likes to be outside a lot, and it was a nice place to sit outside. They all seem very helpful there. The apartments are clean, neat, and not too big. He has his own bathroom and a nice closet area. They allowed us to bring him a mini fridge, as long as we were the ones responsible for it and taking care of it. It doesn't have a living room and all that. It's just basically a bedroom with a bathroom in it. They seem to have a lot of activities. It's nice and clean and decorated. He's in the hospital for three weeks out of the month, but still he has to pay the full amount, and I know part of what he pays is for assisted living."

"I attended a wine event at this facility right before Christmas and was blown away! There is not another retirement community in the area that is comparable. The food was amazing and the staff and people that live there were all so happy. I felt like i was visiting a beautiful resort. "

"My mom is a resident of Canterfield of Clay County. I don't think they have enough activities for the residents; I'd like to see more activities. My mom was very impressed when she got in there, with the food. But lately, all I'm hearing are complaints; the food is not up to my mom's expectations. The building is very nice. The staff were not as friendly as the other place we visited. In terms of value for your money, I have a hard time coming to the conclusion that $4500 to $5000 a month to care for a person is so out of line. It seems like everybody else is in that price range, it doesn’t make any difference which facility you talk to. It's so grossly overpriced. When my mom first got there, she did ceramics, and she liked them. She never talks about any movies that they're showing."

"Vicar's Landing is a first-class operation. We had the opportunity to have dinner there and they showed us around. They got pretty much everything you want in terms of services. The location is very good. It is very close to St. Augustine. They have all levels of care including an onsite hospital equivalent, which was immaculate, I mean, it really looked. The housing was absolutely spectacular compared to all the other places. You can get anything from 700 to 1500 square foot place, and they have both apartments and stand-alone houses. We met several of the residents there, they were all extremely happy. I have nothing bad to say about that. It was not cheap, but then none of the places is cheap. I think you got good value for your money. "

"I live in Starling at Nocatee Independent Living. I love the flower arrangements in the rooms, the layout of the facility, and the pool. I like everything about it. They have putting championship tournaments, bowling, music, art, and everything you would want. It is excellent."

"I liked Windsor Pointe of Jacksonville. All of the staff that I met were very engaging and friendly and also engaging with the guests that were already living there. The place was fairly new. It was well-kept and presented well. They had a gym and a salon. They had doctors and dentists that would come around. If they need it, those services would be available. The apartments themselves were nice."

"We went to Inspirations at Town Center. It was very nice. They had everything. They had a gym, a salon, a pool, pickleball courts, bocce courts, and two meals a day. It was basically only about six months old. The staff were very nice and very helpful."

"My mother is going to Discovery Village at Deerwood. My mom actually chose it. We were next door at another one that just opened up, and it was too much of a retirement living community and was more active. She needs a little more assistance, so they sent us next door to Discovery. We were lucky enough to meet Sandra, and she was able to take us on a tour. The room was a smaller room. My mom liked it better, and it was more of a studio than a two-room apartment type thing. She felt more comfortable with that one. As she declines, they also have a 40-room memory care facility attached to it. I think that'll work out that she won't have to go too far and move again as her memory declines. It's a very nice place. It has a restaurant and a small pool. They'll open up the pool for some little exercises. They have a nurse on-staff. I let her choose, and she liked it. They had a slightly bigger room. It's almost like a two-room, which is a living room, a bedroom, and a bathroom. It did not have a stove. It was more of a studio. She doesn't want to get lost or have to remember too much. I think that the one-room was just enough to get her from the bedroom to the microwave to the bathroom and to the living room. She felt more comfortable with it. They were very accommodating. We were able to even see the nurse when we were there without making another appointment. Sandra was very supportive. Another lady was doing something, and she made it a point to say hi to mom. We met four people, and they were all very nice. It seems to be similar in the layout of some, but very accessible. Mom was lucky enough to pick a room right across from the elevator. She just has to come out of her room, get in the elevator, and come on down to the restaurant. Then she will be downstairs where everything is, so that was a benefit."

"I liked The Coves at River Garden. It was very clean, not large, and had a lot of activities. I met the director. They had an indoor pool. The only problem is there's a waiting list of a year or a year and a half because it is small. The cost is about the same as the really nice ones, but you don't have to have a huge buy-in, which was very interesting to me. I saw a one-bedroom with a bath and a half, but the one I liked was the two-bedroom with two baths, which was very spacious. They had remodeled the kitchens with beautiful new cabinets and glass backsplashes, and it's very well kept. They had large walk-in closets that I liked. You get dinner, which is included in the rent, and they have lunch available, but you have to pay for it. They take you to the doctor and to the grocery store, and they have activities planned every day. I saw the independent, assisted, and the nursing home. The staff who toured me was very knowledgeable and very kind."

"Fleet Landing is a new and very attractive property. The part that we were looking at was called Beacon Pointe, and it's a new building. Half of it was finished and being lived in, while the other half was being completed by the construction company, which would be open by the end of this year. We were looking at apartments versus individual homes, and the apartment that we were looking at was a one-bedroom, then the next one up was a one-bedroom that had a den. They're brand new and well designed, but I just felt that it was overpriced. The dining area was well appointed and the food we had for lunch was delicious. We had a very positive experience with the staff and the place was immaculate. I went to a room where people can draw and paint. They have an exercise area that's very well equipped, and their woodshop. The outdoor spaces were very well landscaped and very attractive too, but what I liked the most about the place was probably the way that it's designed and it's a five- minute walk to the beach."
