What to Consider About Assisted Living in Ponte Vedra Beach

The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration licenses and regulates Florida’s health facilities. The AHCA’s Division of Health Quality Assurance licenses/certifies and regulates assisted living facilities. Its Bureau of Field Operations completes on-site surveys to ensure facilities are complying with state licensure requirements. The Jacksonville Field Office is responsible for assisted living facilities in St. Johns County.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Ponte Vedra Beach

  • Florida is an extremely tax-friendly state, especially toward retirees. There isn’t any state income tax in Florida, so retirement income and Social Security benefits aren’t taxed.
  • The average combined statewide sales tax rate is 7.01%, which is about average and ranks Florida 23rd in the nation. However, St. Johns County only charges 0.5% for local sales taxes, so the combined total in Ponte Vedra Beach is just 6.5%. Groceries and prescription drugs are exempt from these taxes, which saves money on two top expenses for seniors.

  • Ponte Vedra Beach doesn’t have a local hospital, but it’s just seven miles from the Mayo Clinic-Jacksonville, which is regionally ranked #1 in Florida and Jacksonville. This general medical surgical facility is nationally ranked in seven adult specialties, including cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics and urology. It’s also rated high performing in one adult specialty and 16 procedures or conditions.
