It was a very nice facility with lovely rooms, lots of activities, and nice common areas. The staff was very attentive. The food service looked wonderful. The only reason I ruled this one out was that the other facility I looked at was so much closer for me to visit. I absolutely recommend this community to others.

My mother was at The Gables of Jacksonville. The caregivers seemed to be okay. However, there were a lot of miscommunications between upper management and staff. Some of the things that they tell you to get you in the door are not always what they should be or what they will be. I had gone on vacation, and I had my sister-in-law check in on my mom. My mom's room was really dirty, and she didn't have any clean towels. I told them about it, and then, of course, they went in and cleaned up the room and washed some of her clothes. My mom had one really good caregiver that I know of, Maribel, and she was good. However, the marketing person who showed me the different rooms made a lot of promises and told me things that I wanted to hear. However, once my mother was actually in the facility, things kind of turned around. They even lost some of her paperwork, and they constantly lost her payment. I had to call like every month and tell them, "I already paid you. I paid you on the 20-something." The upper management's communication is majorly lacking there. The dining room was really nice. The rooms themselves were nice, but what they tell you to get you in the door doesn't always match up. I thought my mother was going to be taking a shower every day, and I was told that wasn't the case. I was told her room was going to be cleaned every week and that her laundry was going to be done, and obviously, that wasn't the case, as we found out. As I complained more, things started to look up, meaning that they were following through because they knew I was complaining, but it shouldn't take me complaining for them to do their job. So, I was really unhappy. At least twice, I went in there and cleaned the room myself. I took my own equipment and stuff and cleaned the room. I really wasn't happy, and I think probably out of all the things, the thing that made me unhappy was the way that they were processing her payment. They would send me letters telling me that I owed them with fees and all that, and obviously, that wasn't the case because I had paid them, and they just lost the payment or applied it somewhere else. They sent information to me with somebody else's name on it. So, they had my mom's name on the top, and they had some gentleman's name on the bottom of the invoice, and so, I was really not happy with that.

I had a friend who lived here. They had a lot of activities, and they had a nice dining room. The downstairs was very pleasant, and she had a nice room there. The staff showed me a room upstairs, and I did not like it at all. It was like a dorm room with a little microwave. It was not what I want. I am not ready for that. The only nice thing about it was the building itself. It looked like you are going to a home. It had a porch in front. That part was all very pleasant. I enjoyed visiting her. The staff seemed to be OK.

It was comparable to the place my mother is in, probably a little smaller. I liked it. The people were very friendly. It was a place that I would like my mother to be.
