Waterford, Virginia, is a small hamlet just northwest of Washington, D.C. The entire community is noted as a National Historic Landmark District for the preservation of 18-19th-century buildings and character. Seniors who enjoy history may find plenty of interesting things to learn about here. The Leesburg Senior Center also offers opportunities for the elderly to explore different hobbies or simply meet new friends. With about 1 in 10 of Waterford’s population aged 65 or older, the senior center can be very active.

The nearby Leesburg Premium Outlets shopping center is a popular destination for seniors who enjoy shopping, with a wide variety of options to buy or simply window-shop. The temperate climate in Waterford, as well as its proximity to the nation’s capital for big-city needs, makes it an attractive place for the elderly to retire.

Many seniors in Waterford opt to age in place, remaining in their homes and familiar surroundings. To help these individuals retain their independence, the Waterford area has several highly qualified home health care and chore assistance, or homemaker, services. The cost of these, according to Genworth’s Cost of Care 2018 Survey, averages $22.50 per hour for homemaker assistance and $23.38 for home health care. For reference, the national average for these services is $21 and $22, respectively. Waterford seniors can budget and average of $4,290 to $4,458 per month for home assistance.

Note: Home health care cost data was not available for Waterford, so data for the closest city, Washington, D.C., was used here.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Waterford area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Waterford Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Waterford:

Loudoun County Salvation Army

Address: 10 Cardinal Park Dr. SE, Leesburg, VA 20175
Phone: 703-771-3371

The Salvation Army offers a variety of services to help the elderly in need. On-site, a thrift store has household goods and clothing, and there is also a food pantry at this location. Case managers are employed to help seniors apply for government benefits and other services they may be eligible for. There are also group activities to help seniors meet new friends and avoid isolation, as well as limited bill pay assistance, mostly for utilities.

Loudoun Hunger Relief

Address: 750 Miller Drive, Suite A-1, Leesburg, VA 20175
Phone: (703) 777-5911

This organization services families in need throughout Loudoun County, including Waterford. Food boxes are packed by volunteer staff to allow families to prepare well-balanced, nutritious meals. Special dietary needs of senior citizens are taken into account when these individuals apply for services. The agency also has homelessness emergency services on a limited basis.

Virginia Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program

Address: 801 E. Main Street, Richmond, VA 23219
Phone: (800) 552-3402

Seniors who need winterization assistance for their home, or help to pay for heating and cooling expenses may be eligible for the LEAP program, sponsored by the state’s Department of Social Services. This is an income-based program, open to all those who qualify. The program also may pay for emergency repairs on cooling units.

Virginia Drug Card

Address: 8609 Westwood Center Drive, Suite 110, Tysons Corner, VA 22182
Phone: (703) 934-8818

Virginia Drug Card is not an insurance program, but it will help offset some of the costs that seniors have with both prescription medicine and generic alternatives, as prescribed by their doctor. The card offers discounts at many different pharmacies, from 30% to 80% off the costs of the medication. It works in part with the Medical Society of Northern Virginia to help reach scenarios and those in need throughout the region.

Loudoun County Meals on Wheels

Address: 742 Miller Drive, SE, Leesburg, VA 20175
Phone: (703) 777-0257

Home-delivered meals, served Monday through Friday, are offered at no charge to the elderly and those who are unable to prepare food on their own. This is an income-based program, staffed with volunteers. Non-perishable and frozen meals are provided for the weekends.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
