With a strong medical system, plenty of public transit and unrivaled natural beauty, it’s no wonder Seattle, Washington, ranks highly in Caring’s 2019 Senior Living Report. Seattle offers its residents a diverse community with a lively art scene, rich culinary traditions and easy access to parks and beaches. Seattle is also home to some of the most advanced hospitals in the nation such as UW Medical Center.

But these amenities come at a price: according to the 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, the average cost of home care in Seattle is $6,769 per month. Home care provides help with household and daily tasks only, so seniors who need light medical services should opt for home health care instead.

Below we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in Seattle– complete with services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled resources to help seniors and their families to access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Financial Assistance for Home Care in Seattle, WA

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.

  • Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-term care insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
  • Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
  • Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
  • Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living. Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
  • Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.

Seattle Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Seattle:

Meals

Address: Not listed
Phone Number: (206) 684-0660

The City of Seattle funds the Aging and Disability Services programs, including the congregate meal and home meal delivery services. The meal services are provided through a network of nonprofit community-based organizations throughout the city. Volunteers serve meals at eleven congregate meals centers to thousands of seniors over the age of 60 every day. There is a small charge requested for each meal, but nobody will be turned away if they can’t pay. Nutrition education classes are offered after or before the meals to help seniors learn how to prepare basic meals for themselves. There is a home delivery service for seniors who are homebound. Seniors who cannot prepare a meal for themselves receive a hot meal each day from Monday to Friday and a pack of freezer meals for the weekend.

Weatherization Assistance Program

Address: 700 5th Avenue, Suite 5700, Seattle, WA 98104
Phone Number: (206) 684-0244

The Weatherization Assistance Program is a system funded by the federal government and the state of Washington. The aim of the program is to assist low-income households with reducing their utility bills by making the home more energy-efficient. Priority is given to seniors over the age of 60 and households with very young children. All of the services provided by the program, including air sealing, insulation, energy audits and furnace repairs or replacements, are free of charge.

Sound Generations

Address: 2208 Second Avenue, Suite 100, Seattle, WA 98121
Phone Number: (206) 448-5757

Sound Generations is a nonprofit organization that has been providing a range of services to seniors in the area since 1967. Services offered include Meals on Wheels home food delivery, community dining programs, Hyde Shuttle senior transport, fitness classes and health management programs. Additionally, the organization provides legal assistance, minor home repairs and caregiver support services at no charge. The majority of the services offered by the group do not incur any charges, but donations are always appreciated. Some of the programs require an application to establish age and income eligibility.
