San Diego is known as California’s Beach City; seniors have plenty of options for fresh air and sunshine while strolling the La Jolla Cove coastline or enjoying a lunchtime picnic at Mission Bay Park. San Diego weather is warm and moderate almost year-round, which makes it ideal for seniors who enjoy the outdoors. The city is home to 1.4 million residents, 12.3% of which are age 65 and older. Such a large population of older citizens means that San Diego also has an excellent medical system, with the nationally ranked Scripps La Jolla and Kaiser Permanente San Diego located here.
San Diego also has a burgeoning home health industry to serve senior residents. Per the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2019, the average monthly cost of homemaker services in San Diego is $5,335. The cost is the same per month for home health aide services. Both prices are higher than the national average, which runs $4,290 for homemaker services and $4,385 for home health aide services monthly.
At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the San Diego area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

This is the 3rd caregiving company we have worked with over the past year and is definitely the best. Mom has caregivers 4 hours twice a day to help with personal care, physical therapy, making meals, and ambulation. They seem to be an organized office with dedicated staff that cover specific critical areas (e.g., HR, staffing, billing, etc). There is a significant focus on education and training of caregivers for caregiving activities as well as medical knowledge for commonly encountered diseases of the elderly. They work hard to match caregivers to the medical and physical needs of the client as well as personality fit. When a new caregiver is assigned, they always shadow another caregiver so there is at least some introductory crossover. There have been very few issues but when they happen, they are addressed very quickly and compassionately.

Caregivers stayed with our mom through the night to make sure she stayed in bed and had companionship when she could not sleep and was confused or frightened. They were always on time, personable, easy to talk with, and prepared for our mom’s needs. They kept informative logs that helped our family. Staff and caregivers were always professional and compassionate. We could trust that our mom’s needs were being met, and this helped all of us manage a difficult situation.

We are working with Homewatch Caregivers for my dad. It is generally positive. For the most part, they have been pretty receptive to our needs. My dad has unfortunately been in and out of the hospital, so we haven’t needed them at times, but they’re flexible about rescheduling. That is a positive aspect of the services they are providing. The caregivers themselves, according to my mom, have been very helpful. It has been pretty good. They provide basic caregiving and they help around the house. At one time they also helped with taking my dad to appointments.

They were very prompt with my inquiry and they came over the very same day. They were very nice in a situation like this and I was very impressed by them. They showed a lot of concern. Their staff helped me with a little task one day and it was totally unexpected. I think they are just very good and dedicated to the idea of running their agency correctly. The original caregiver that they sent out, whom we liked a lot, had to undergo surgery and the replacement caregiver was very excellent also. In fact at one point in time, one of the girls came in the morning and the other one in the afternoon. The afternoon girl was the one who had surgery. The girl in the morning had her covered full shift and she continued with us and we’re very happy.

My mother had a fall and ended up in skilled nursing care. Trouble is all of her kids and relatives live far away. A big issue is what were we going to do when she healed and was ready to go back home? We knew we would need caregivers…perhaps 24/7 when mom first got home. We contacted Home Instead and they were incredible. So easy to deal with. So supportive. Ready to do whatever it took to ensure mom was well cared for and safe. It was a no-brainer to realize this is a top notch organization run by caring and very responsible people. However in the end rather than return home, my mom moved back east to live with my sister so we never actually hired Home Instead to provide caregiver services.

The caregivers from A Step Above Caregiving, LLC pretty much do what we ask them to do. We have caregivers over during the night and they give her showers, wash her hair, and make sure she doesn’t fall. They also check her blood sugar and give her snacks according to what her blood sugar is. They do light houskeeping, like they pick up any soiled diapers and do laundry. The caregivers are really good. We like both of them that come right now. Their scheduling and billing is good. Shelly is the owner and she’s great. Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
