"My father was recently discharged from the hospital, but before he could be released, we were told he would need 24 hour care. The discharge planner recommended we call Golden Years. Carrie, the care manger, met with us at the hospital and helped us create a great plan. Now that dad has been home for a few weeks he’s doing much better. We so glad to have been introduced to Carrie and their staff."

"I'm new at this & very pressured to find the right type of care that my Dad needs. So An employee from Senior helpers contacted me through a phone call or email. Sorry I can't recall. The thing is that I've been calling around, getting different places calling me & I've called places for more info but this guy D....was so sensitive for me not respectfully calling him back to confirm an appt visit. When I made the appt I had a date & time set up while the very next day they needed to reschedule to a different day. It was 2 wks in advance. So I went to the appt at my Dad's & nobody showed up. I called & left a msg asking when they we're going to make it today to the appt. They told me that the appt was at a later date & texted me later to confirm that latter date. So I said "No thank you & no need to reschedule". Here comes the date of that latter date. This time the lady that showed up was not getting an answer at my dad's house & I'm glad he didn't answer or even hear the doorbell because he was out back in the backyard. So she called me & said nobody is answering the door & I said because I never confirmed that date for the appt. I actually said just like I mentioned earlier that "I didn't want to reschedule". So that lady that went to my dad's was told that I confirmed but clearly missed the "no need to reschedule" message. D.... then called me soon after this missed appt & left me a rude voicemail & the exact same rude message to my email. He was scolding me that I confirmed that appt, it was very disrespectful to nit call him back, that I was the reason for the lady using up her gas driving all the way over there (BY THE WAY, IT WAS IN THE SAME CITY'S it wasn't that out of her way either. More like 10 mins drive)& her valuable time & travel to go all the way out there wasting her time. He sounded like he took the misunderstanding so personal. I was blown away to get his rude email & voicemail of him going off on me. He was really upset. So obviously I never called him back because he was already pissed off at me & telling me off. I don't need to explain myself after his rude attitude. Who would want to call back someone after that kind of treatment to a potential new client?! Not me! So be careful, walk on eggshells & be polite & respectful because if u get this guy D....& you're already looking at a few other places with the phone calls & emails with info. I was busy. There could have been some type of accident with me or my dad & he didn even ask me what happened remember I said "No need to reschedule...". I just couldn't believe his immature & ignorant messages he left me. He needs to work on his customer service or GET FIRED. I'm already stressing about finding a place for my dad etc. Don't call this place Senior helpers. He just made the whole company look bad & I'll never contact them again about anything. That was a mouthful but I'm only writing this review so nobody else gets caught up in a reasonable misunderstanding like I had & was blamed for it. Thanks, C......"

"The people that come out from Right at Home are first class. Sometimes, it's a bit of a challenge because I live out in the middle of nowhere in East County, so it's hard to get people to come way out here. They come twice a week. The caregiver comes out and helps to clean up, washes the dishes, does light housekeeping, and sits and talks with me. I live alone. She straightens up the house for me. She will cook me a meal sometimes. She puts some lotion on my back for the pain that I have there. They're pretty good with scheduling. Every once in a while, she can't make it for one reason or another, but she's here pretty regularly 96% of the time. I've never had any problem with them."

"I used Partners In Home Care. It was for my mom; it was fine. Some of the caregivers were very good, but some were a little inexperienced. As far as taking care of my mom, they helped her with her meals, they transferred her from the bed to the wheelchair, and from the wheelchair to the toilet, and when medical personnel came in they helped facilitate that. They were mostly taking care of her and like helping her dress and do her hair. I called different agencies and talked to them, but Partners In Home Care were more accommodating than others as far as their hours. We had family during the day, but I needed somebody early morning and late afternoon to evening, and they were amenable to splitting hours. Their minimum number of hours wasn't as high as others. They were more flexible."

"We have been using Whole Life Home Care for a couple of months now. We use them on a very limited basis. We have them for a minimum of four hours a week. So far, so good. We primarily use the caregiver to take my dad shopping, just be with him when we're not home, and take him for like a stroll in his wheelchair. The interaction with the caregivers is very good."

"Senior Helpers of San Diego North is helping with my mom, changing her clothes, helping her in the toilet, helping her into her pajamas, reminding her about brushing her teeth, and helping her with her walk or those kinds of things. It's just a couple of hours each day. They are very kind and very patient. They seem well-trained because they speak slowly and loudly. They are aware that my parents cannot hear them. The services we received have been very good."

Assisted living is also lower at $5,475 but requires seniors to move to residential communities. Nursing home care is the highest-cost option at $9,384, but also requires a move and better suits seniors with extensive health-related needs. Home care covers personal caregiving but doesn’t include medical services provided by registered nurses or therapists like home health care. Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
San Diego seniors wishing to age in place at home often need additional services and supports to do so safely. Several nonprofit and governmental programs help aging adults by assisting with rising utility costs, making homes safer or more energy efficient and delivering nutritious food at no or low cost to those who qualify.

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
