Financial Assistance for Home Care in Denver, CO

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.

  • Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-Term Care Insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
  • Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
  • Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
  • Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living.Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
  • Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of services can a home care agency in Denver provide?

Home care agencies in Denver provide help with daily activities that may become more challenging with age. When used alongside home modifications and assistive technology, home care can enable older adults to remain in their homes, rather than transitioning to a residential community or nursing home. Home care agencies provide two types of care, including companion care and personal care. Companion care includes transportation, help with basic household chores, grocery shopping assistance and meal planning and preparation. Personal care includes help with daily living activities, such as bathing and dressing.

How many home care agencies are there near Denver?

To meet the increasing need for long-term care solutions, there are 88 home care agencies serving seniors and families in Denver. Eight of these facilities are recognized for providing outstanding care through the Caring Stars program, and many more have consistently positive client feedback. This, along with factors such as pricing, availability and scope of care, can help seniors refine their search to determine the best facility for their needs.

How do you pay for senior care at home?

In Denver, income-qualifying individuals may pay for home care services through the state Medicaid’s Elderly, Blind and Disabled Waiver. This waiver covers a range of services, including home-delivered meals, nonmedical transportation, personal care, respite care and routine housekeeping and laundry. Those who don’t qualify for the waiver have several options for paying for in-home care, including cashing in a life insurance policy, taking out a reverse mortgage loan, using a long-term care insurance policy or creating a collective sibling agreement

Assisted living homes vs. home care: how to decide

Assisted living and home care are both for older adults who are largely independent but need assistance with some daily living activities. To identify the right option for a senior’s needs, it’s helpful to consider how much each option costs, what it includes and what its drawbacks are. Assisted living in Denver costs $5,500, over $1,000 less than in-home care. This monthly rate includes living expenses, such as housing and meals, along with personal care, making it considerably more affordable. However, assisted living offers limited control over care quality and lifestyle, while home care provides optimal control.

Can you write off in-home elderly care?

Currently, the IRS only permits deductions for medical expenses. This may include home health care services, such as wound care and medication administration, but it doesn’t extend to nonmedical services, such as personal care and nonemergency medical transportation. To help reduce home care expenses, many seniors rely primarily on daily help from family members or access subsidized services through community-based organizations and the Area Agency on Aging. Those who meet income guidelines may also qualify for public benefits to help fund their care.
