Burke is a suburb of Washington D.C. that is sought out for its low crime rate and relatively comfortable year-round weather. Active seniors residing in this community have access to a variety of local amenities, including the Burke Farmers Market, which features vendors selling locally sourced produce, meats and baked goods, and Burke Lake Golf Center, an 18-hole, par 3 golf course with a clubhouse. With its local features and proximity to the nation’s capital, it’s no surprise that over 4,000 seniors call Burke home.

Burke has several local and nationally owned in-home care agencies, providing seniors with the opportunity to age in place, even as their care needs change. On average, local agencies charge $22.50 per hour according to the Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care Survey. The average monthly cost for homemaker services in this region is $4,290, and home health aide services cost $4,458 per month on average. This is a little higher than the respective national averages of $4,004 and $4,195.

Note: Home care cost data wasn’t available for Burke, so data for the closest city, Washington D.C., was used.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Burke area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Burke Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Burke:

Home Repair for the Elderly Program

Address: 3700 Pender Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030
Phone: (703) 246-5100

This home repair program provides minor home repairs to low- and moderate-income senior homeowners who reside in Burke, as well as accessibility modifications for disabled homeowners. Fairfax County provides up to $500 in materials and a crew to do up to one week of labor to complete necessary repairs. It is fully funded by the county, meaning that seniors pay nothing for materials or services, and it is available to all Fairfax County residents aged 62 and over.

Weatherization Assistance Program

Address: 214 Fort Collier Road, Suite 3, Winchester, VA 22603
Phone: (540) 665-0200

CHP Energy Solutions provides weatherization services for low-income seniors in Burke, helping them reduce energy costs while also assessing and resolving health- and safety-related issues. Services provided under this program include site-specific energy audits, improving insulation and sealing doors and windows. This program is federally funded and is administered by the Department of Housing and Community Development.

Tax Relief for Seniors

Address: 12000 Government Center Parkway, Suite 225.5, Fairfax, VA 22035
Phone: (703) 222-8234

Fairfax County provides real estate tax relief to Burke seniors aged 65 and over who meet income and asset eligibility guidelines. Seniors may be eligible for full or partial tax relief, depending on household income. In some cases, senior taxpayers who are renters may also qualify for tax relief. Applicants who turn 65 during the application year may qualify for tax relief on a prorated basis.

Fairfax Area Meals on Wheels

Address: 12011 Government Center Parkway, Suite 708, Fairfax, VA 22035
Phone: (703) 324-7948

The Fairfax Area Meals on Wheels Program provides nutritious meals to seniors who live in Burke. This program operates five days a week and provides two meals delivered three times a week or more. Meals are available to seniors age 60 and over who are unable to shop for and safely prepare healthy meals on their own or have no one to provide meals for them. While there is no cost for participating in this program, seniors are given the opportunity to make a donation towards the cost of their meal.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
