Topsfield is located near the Atlantic coast, in Massachusetts’ North Shore region. The community is famous for the Topsfield Fair, America’s Oldest County Fair with crowds that gather to over 500,000 over the 10-day event. The area is rich in natural beauty and wildlife, in places like Mass Audubon Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary. The community itself is a suburb of Boston, but far enough from the city center to give residents the feel of a rural way of life. With nearly a quarter of the town’s population senior citizens, Topsfield may be a great place for retirees.

Retaining enough independence to age in place, in their own homes, is important to many Topsfield seniors. To help them, the area has many qualified home health care or homemaker service providers. The costs for these run a little higher than the state average, with health care workers costing an average of $28.75 per hour and caretakers averaging $28.50. Massachusetts overall averages about $1 less per hour. Seniors budgeting for home care services can anticipate spending almost $5,500 per month, according to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2019.

Note: Home care cost data was not available for Topsfield, so data for the closest city, Boston, was used.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Topsfield area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Finding a really good aide who is well trained is the most important thing we needed. They need to communicate better from the office to the client. They need to be clearer.

Topsfield Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Topsfield:

Meals On Wheels

Address:  8 West Common Street, Topsfield, MA 01983
Phone: (978) 887-1523

Hot, nutritious meals are delivered to eligible Topsfield seniors Monday through Thursday, with short-term and long-term delivery available. When delivering these meals, the volunteers also give wellness checks to those in the program. It is funded and operated by the Topsfield Council on Aging. Special cardiac meals are available for those with special nutritional needs.

Home Modification Loan Program (HMLP)

Address: 600 Washington Street, Boston, MA 02111
Phone: (617) 204-3600

Topsfield adults with disabilities may be eligible for an interest-free home loan to modify their house, including adding wheelchair ramps, widening doorways or adding handrails in the bathroom. The amount lent ranges from $1,000 up to $50,000 and includes all costs associated with repairs. Each household is only eligible for one home loan. This program is funded by the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission, with eligibility and loan amount determined by income and household size.

Massachusetts LIHEAP and HEARTWAP programs

Address:  3 Washington Square, 2nd Floor, Haverhill, MA 01830
Phone: (978) 373-1971

This program is operated by the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development and is intended to offset the costs of heating and electricity for the elderly in need. Eligibility is based on household size and income. In addition to helping pay for utilities, eligible households may receive winterization services such as insulating walls or sealing drafts around windows and doors.

Topsfield COA Senior Transportation Services

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
