For seniors, New York City is a great place to live. Bankrate recently ranked it 18th on its list of the best large cities for retirees, with high marks for the low crime rate, excellent public transportation and numerous cultural attractions. Seniors who live here can explore world-class museums like the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Despite having a population of 8.4 million people, New York City offers plenty of green space, including Central Park and the New York Botanical Garden. With so many senior-friendly attractions, it’s no wonder that 13.6% of the residents are over 65.

Compared to the national average, New York City’s home care costs are relatively high. The Genworth 2018 Cost of Care Survey revealed that the city’s seniors pay an average of $4,576 per month for homemaker services and $4,767 per month for home health aides. The national average monthly costs for these services are $4,004 and $4,195, respectively. These figures are based on 44 hours of care per week.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the New York area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

New York Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in New York:

New York Foundation for Senior Citizens

Address: 11 Park Pl., 14th Fl., New York, NY 10007
Phone: (212) 962-7559

This nonprofit, nonsectarian organization provides several services to seniors throughout New York City. Its services include subsidized housing, case management and home safety audits. The organization also offers a free transportation service, Project CART, that takes seniors to destinations around the city. For seniors who aren’t eligible for Medicaid, the organization offers a low-cost respite care program.

Citymeals on Wheels

Address: 355 Lexington Ave., New York, NY 10017
Phone: (212) 687-1234

Citymeals on Wheels is a nonprofit organization that delivers weekend and holiday meals to homebound seniors. It also operates a mobile food pantry that provides shelf-stable foods, such as cereal and canned fruit, to seniors. In addition to its meal programs, the organization offers companionship through the Friendly Visiting program. Volunteers are matched with seniors based on common interests, and once they’re matched, volunteers have a six-month commitment.

Rebuilding Together New York City

Address: 126 10th St., Brooklyn, NY 11215
Phone: (718) 488-8840

Since 1998, this nonprofit organization has helped New York City seniors repair and modify their homes. It provides home repair services for low-income seniors. These services include performing routine maintenance and rebuilding after disasters. The organization also offers accessibility modifications for low-income seniors. Wheelchair ramps, handrails and ADA-compliant bathrooms are some of the modifications the organization may provide.

New York City Department for the Aging

Address: 2 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10007
Phone: 311

This Office for the Aging connects seniors with case-management agencies that can help them remain in their homes. These agencies may provide personal care, housekeeping, home-delivered meals and other services. The cost of these services is determined on a sliding scale, and depending on a senior’s income, they may be asked to make contributions.

The Parodneck Foundation

Address: 121 Sixth Ave., Ste 501, New York, NY 10013
Phone: (212) 431-9700

The Parodneck Foundation is a nonprofit organization that helps New York City seniors improve their living conditions and avoid foreclosure. The organization offers low and interest-free loans that seniors can use to make emergency home improvements. It also offers deferred loans that may be partially or totally forgiven if seniors meet certain requirements.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
