The medium-sized town of Triangle is bounded on one side by a gentle stretch of the Potomac River, and on the other by the shopping and commercial zone of Dumfries. Around 6.5% of Triangle’s 8,200 residents are seniors aged 65 and over. The National Museum of the Marine Corps is located in Triangle, as is the natural splendor of Prince William Forest Park. The museum offers free admission and ADA-compliant access for seniors with limited mobility, while the park makes a great low-impact hiking challenge for active seniors in Triangle.

Seniors in Triangle can expect summer highs that average 88 degrees, and winter nights that dip to an average of 26. This part of Tidewater Virginia gets roughly 40 inches of rain in a typical year, which keeps nearby Quantico Creek full and good for fishers with a senior discount fishing license.

Homemaker services in Triangle cost an average of $3,670 a month, and services from home health aides cost an average of $3,861, according to the 2018 Genworth Cost of Care Survey. Nationwide, seniors pay an average of $4004 a month for homemaker services and $4,195 a month for home health aide assistance.

Note: Home care cost data wasn’t available for Triangle, so data for the closest city, Winchester, was used.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Triangle area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Triangle Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Triangle:

Emergency Home Repair and Accessibility Grant Program

Address: 102 Heritage Way NE, Suite 103, Leesburg, VA 20177-7400
Phone: (703) 777-0506

The Division of Housing and Community Development helps seniors in Triangle aged 62 and over get emergency home repairs done at reduced or no cost to themselves. The Emergency Home Repair and Accessibility Grant allows for a one-time payment of up to $5,000 for income- and asset-qualifying seniors. Funds may be used to pay for structural, HVAC, plumbing or electrical repairs, as long as the issue needing work presents some kind of hazard to the seniors’ safety or health.

Foreclosure Prevention Assistance

Address: 21641 Ridgetop Circle, Sterling, VA 20166
Phone: (703) 777-0555

Seniors in Triangle can get help preventing foreclosure or eviction through the Community Support Unit at the Department of Family Services. This program provides one-time direct financial assistance to pay down an overdue mortgage or rent payment that has moved into eviction or foreclosure. Seniors in Triangle may apply on an emergency basis, without an appointment or referral, but all applicants must meet income and asset guidelines.

Sterling Link

Address: P.O Box 443, Sterling, VA 20167-0443
Phone: (703) 437-1776

Link Against Hunger offers food bank and financial assistance programs throughout Northern Virginia. Seniors who meet the program’s income limits and have a referral to the project from a licensed social worker may qualify for no-cost clothing and personal items vouchers, financial aid and cash assistance.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

Address: 50 Sullivan Street, Suite A, Warrenton, VA 20186
Phone: (540) 347-7000

Seniors in Triangle can get up to 30% off the cost of their home heating and cooling bills via the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Commonwealth Community Action Partnership is a private nonprofit that receives seniors’ applications for aid and verifies income and assets for eligibility. Seniors can request an application by phone and submit it by mail.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
