With approximately 11,560 residents over the age of 65, seniors account for 15.8% of the total population of Redlands. This southern California city has a pleasant year round climate, below-average cost of living and a violent crime rate that’s lower than the national figure. In addition to Redlands Community Hospital, which is rated as high performing in several adult procedures, seniors have a wide range of health care options in nearby San Bernardino and Riverside. For nursing home care, the city’s seniors pay slightly above the national median, but at $8,060 a month, it’s quite affordable compared to the statewide average.
Physicians and nurses remain on-site 24/7 at the city’s nursing homes where seniors may receive medication management, wound care, injections, diabetes management and various rehabilitative services on top of personal care assistance. If constant medical supervision is unnecessary, assisted living or home care may allow seniors to live with more independence and trim down their health care expenses.
An overview of the cost of senior care is included in this guide as well as a list of programs and services that may help seniors pay for nursing home care or delay it by providing services in their homes.

I will give you so many more stars, and a better rating if you had more employees like Jane. I do not know her last name, but she is the only CNA that responds in a timely manner to our lights or if we call and we really need help she’s there, she’s very caring and upbeat. I am very allergic to fish to the point of anaphylaxis. Been there done that this facility was told more than once that I am allergic to fish and fish products and twice I receive fish I do believe the only reason I’m not getting fish anymore is because I threaten to dump my dinner tray up and over the nurses station. I am a very nice calm person until you push my button. Then my voice raises. I keep telling RNs that my medication’s need to be changed I get my blood pressure medication morning and night not to in the morning and none at night. I have to refuse the second blood pressure medication in the morning and then ask for it at night. I’m to use my steroid Symbicort inhaler morning and night and I need it first thing in the morning when they wake me up and I have to go to the bathroom , I ask them to get an order where I can carry it myself. I do have one in my purse and I use it first thing in the morning but they’re so expensive. I’d rather use yours
If I were placing someone in here that could not speak up for themselves, or were not aware, I would make sure I was here as much as humanly possible. I’m a pain in the ass because your staff makes me be that way. Imagine the people they cannot stand up for themselves who is looking out for them not the staff here.

My mother was placed here after surgery. She was supposed to receive "Intense PT". in the 2 weeks that she has been there she has had 1 30 minute session. The second time the PT came he said "Well you went to the restroom, that is enough for today." My mom is not incontinent but was placed in diapers so that the staff wont have to help her to the restroom. On 7/24 I was visiting approximately 12:30 PM Mom rang 4 or 5 times to use the restroom. The nurse told her she was busy to go in her diaper. As a grown adult that is not incontinent it is humiliating to be told that. When I came back at 4:30PM Mom was still in the soiled diaper. She has a rash in her genital area. She is only being allowed to shower every 3 or 4 days, how would you like to have to sit in soiled diapers then only be allowed to shower every 3rd or 4th day.

Terracina Post Acute is the place where my dad is now. It was the one where the hospital had sent him when he first got out of the hospital for physical therapy and care. I’m not saying that they’re dirty or anything like that, but they weren’t as clean as I wanted. The light that alerts the nurses when he wants something wasn’t working, so they didn’t know when he needed help. So a lot of the time, he was trying to take care of things himself because nobody was there to take care of anything for him. They had him in a secure unit. The first day we went, we saw three people trying to escape; they were going out via the emergency-exit door. They have somebody posted there now. The place is not as nice looking as the current one that we have. They were very nice, but at the same time, they lost a lot of his clothes, and they don’t know if somebody stole them or what. Then there were some parts of his wheelchair that they lost or something, but we don’t know what happened to them. They said they would try to see if they could find the parts and let me know, but they still haven’t found it or called me. They didn’t know how to put on his catheter, either, and they put it on incorrectly. He said that the food was good, though. In the locked unit that he’s in, they put them in the dining room and that’s it.
He said that the nursing staff was really nice, but I just don’t think that they were giving the care that he needed. He said that a lot of people were just sitting there and they weren’t doing anything. One day they had a July Fourth barbecue, but that was it. From what I saw, I just kept seeing everybody sitting around in the dining room. He would be sitting in his room alone and just waiting for someone to come inside the room to check on him. He had a really nice Dodgers sweater from the Dodgers — he’s a Dodgers fan — and that was stolen too. We don’t know what happened, but it suddenly disappeared and they said they don’t have any idea where it went. They are supposed to be in charge of this stuff, and I just felt like they didn’t do what they were supposed to do.
Medicaid paid for his care, for the most part.

My mom was at Highland Care Center of Redlands. That one has mixed reviews because she would have to call me on my own phone so I could tell the front desk and have someone come to the room. They provided the physical therapy and stuff like that, but if you put your room light on to call, they just never respond to it, so she would call me at home, and I would call the front desk to tell them that she needed something so that they could go and address her concern. Once I would get a hold of them, they seemed to be pretty quick to respond. They were very nice. The facility seemed clean. It was a little bit dated, but clean. I wouldn’t know about their activities because my mom was non-ambulatory recovering from surgery. And the value for the money, insurance covered it.

The therapy was marvelous. She wasn’t walking at all, and they got her up walking with help. The medical care was good, and the staff was sensitive to her needs. We always felt comfortable visiting there. I went to their Cinco De Mayo. They made an effort to do activities. They had a dayroom where they eat sometimes. The facility was clean and neat, and the food was good. They gave her snacks. She was pretty thin when she got there, and she thrived there. The medicine people were good as were the nurses, and the people who took care of her, kept her clean and bathed her. The social worker was wonderful and got us a wheelchair. I’m very pleased with all of that. I had a very positive experience.

My mom’s at Reche Canyon Rehab & HCC. We’ve requested our medical records from them, and for over a week they have given us the runaround. The care is pretty good, but the communication over there is lacking if a family or a patient makes a request, and it takes them this long to respond appropriately. We’ve been to multiple people over there and still have not gotten what we asked for.
The place is beautiful, clean, and nice. The grounds are beautiful, and the inside is clean, there’s nothing wrong with the facility. The health care staff are good, but the clerical staff aren’t. My mom is 90, and she’s a very good cook; there have been some meals where she couldn’t eat them, and she told me that they weren’t good.
In terms of rehab, they’re attentive. They’ve come to talk to me about her progress and all of that. They’re about the only ones that are transparent in their communication. The care is one thing, but the communication with the administrative folks is another. They were on it when they thought that I wanted to take a tour, and they were going to get a prospective patient. Now that they’ve got her, they’re not as responsive. That’s just my impression.
In terms of value for money, Medicare is paying for it. I don’t have any idea of what it costs or anything like that. If you look at the whole facility overall, they’re seriously lacking in communication. It’s not just the administrative staff. When I ask for assistance with receiving the information we were seeking, we ask everybody in there. We went from one person to the next, and they kept bouncing us all over. They had no clue who to send us to. That tells me they don’t have procedures in place. If someone makes a request, it should go directly to the department that could fill that request, which didn’t happen even to this day.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Redlands, CA
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
