Indiana is a favorable location for older adults. Seniors aged 65 and older represent about 16% of the state’s 6.7 million residents. Thanks to the state’s competitive cost of living, which is 18% lower than the national average, retirees in Indiana may find that their income stretches further. Health care is remarkably affordable, although residents have access to cutting-edge medical care at facilities, such as the Indiana University Health Medical Center in Indianapolis and the Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. Indiana also has its fair share of attractions. Residents enjoy an abundance of gardens, golf courses, museums and scenic natural areas, ranging from sand dunes on Lake Michigan to the Chain O’Lakes State Park.
Independent living is a convenient option for Indiana seniors who want to live in a comfortable, age-restricted community that offers recreational activities and helps with maintenance. Since independent living doesn’t include access to 24-hour personal care, it costs significantly less than assisted living. The median cost of independent living in Indiana is $2,848 per month, which is slightly higher than the national average. This guide provides information about average independent living prices, payment options and free resources for long-term care planning.
The Cost of Independent Living in Indiana
Note: The following Independent Living rates are calculated based on Assisted Living costs in the Genworth 2021 Cost of Care Survey. On average, Independent Living is 30-40% cheaper than Assisted Living, so we reduce Assisted Living fees by 35% to estimate the following rates.
Indiana is among the more affordable states in the nation for obtaining Independent Living services, with older adults paying $2,784 per month for care. By comparison, nationally, Independent Living communities charge $2,925. Among Indiana’s bordering states, Kentucky is the cheapest option for obtaining this type of care, with older adults paying $2,241 per month. In Michigan, rates are comparable at $2,763, and in Illinois, seniors pay $2,917. Ohio’s fees are a few hundred dollars higher at $3,013.
Kokomo is the cheapest place in Indiana to live in an Independent Living community, with local residents paying $2,113 per month for services, and in South Bend, rates are a little higher but still competitive at $2,150. In Muncie, communities charge $2,402, and in Bloomington, rates come in at $2,784. Seniors in Evansville pay $2,853, and in the state capital city of Indianapolis, fees exceed the state median at $2,911. Columbus and Lafayette are the costliest options in Indiana for Independent Living, with communities charging monthly rates of $3,030 and $3,416, respectively.
Independent Living is the cheapest residential care option in Indiana at $2,784 per month. By comparison, Assisted Living, which is similar but includes personal care services, is over $1,000 higher at $4,283, and Nursing Home care provides medical monitoring and skilled nursing for $7,270 per month. Older adults who want to obtain care in their own homes pay $4,767 for basic In-Home Care and specialized Home Health Care. Adult Day Care is the most affordable long-term care option at $1,733 monthly.
Can You Use Medicare or Medicaid to Pay for Independent Living in Indiana?
Unfortunately, you cannot use Medicaid and Medicare to help pay the monthly fee for residing in an Independent Living community. For seniors who need help with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), there may be financial assistance programs available to help cover the cost of care in Independent Living. For more information about financial assistance for those who need a higher level of care, read our guide to Assisted Living in Indiana.
Read on for more information about using alternative means to make Independent Living more affordable, such as retirement funds, the sale of a home, etc.
Paying for Independent Living in Indiana
There are several ways to pay for independent living, depending on a senior’s situation and financial goals. Because these services provide accommodations and services that are social and recreational, they’re not covered by programs like Medicare or Medicaid. Most seniors pay for independent living using retirement benefits or investments. For seniors who want a monthly income stream or need a lump-sum payment to pay for buy-in fees and other upfront costs, a reverse mortgage could be a good option. Additionally, long-term care insurance may pay for some personal services, such as help with meal preparation and errands. For more details, see our guide to independent living.

My mom is a resident of NeighborCare of Chapel Hill. It’s a very old apartment complex. It started 55 and over. She lives there alone and does her own laundry. Her apartment is very nice and well-kept by her. The surrounding area, like the hallways and the doors, is filthy and broken all the time. It is just disappointing because when you walk in the door, you step on actual dirt and debris, and things are hanging that could hit you in the head and hurt you.
They only have one lady they call her an RA. She is in the building my mom lives, and she kinds of oversees things and helps out. She is very, very good, and she does a lot of extra things for the tenants, but I don’t think she has a lot of control over maintenance and keeping things clean in the hallways.
My mother is not a very social person, but I believe that they have areas where she could go and exercise and that sort of thing. They have a few card games and activities where she lives, and they have birthday parties, too. So, there are things available to her as to whether or not she participates.
They have a cafeteria there where she can purchase food. We have groceries delivered and she does her own cooking. She likes the cafeteria but she’s not always able to get out and walk to it. They did have a delivery for a while, and she was impressed with that, but then they had to stop it.
She has nothing but good things to say about the lady there. My mother thinks she’s doing a great job. They do have get-togethers and I think she has a budget, so she comes up with little ideas for get-togethers where they had hot dogs one time and something else the next time. She seems to be very creative, and my mom is always happy when she sees it.
They probably don’t have enough staff to fix things, but these are elderly people, so they need to do the maintenance. My mother has had a few falls there, but they don’t have medical staff unless you’re in the assisted living part of it.

Sycamore Reserve is more for just senior living rather than assisted living and that suited me really well. I like the arrangement of the apartments and it’s a nice place. It’s a very nice place to live in. Everybody I met was friendly, they just didn’t overdo their sales pitch and they let me reach my own decisions. They always explain how things are, and that was nice. They have 14 different floor arrangements in their apartments. Everyone I met on the staff was just real down-to-earth, polite and nice. They didn’t mind joking with the residents, and they’re very friendly. They were having some entertainment, a group was playing music and singing. Now, there weren’t too many attending that. They were getting ready to set up the happy hour in the main lobby and were setting it up when I got there. The people were sitting around, talking and having a drink. When getting there, the traffic is the only drawback that I can see. It’s located near a community hospital and that’s where my doctors are affiliated with. They gave me a menu, they have a continental breakfast every morning, a nice lunch, and you can have whatever you want. It’s just pretty nice. They had a nice dining room. On the upkeep, they had a cleaning service that I could get if I wanted it. Each one of the apartments had its own laundry, a washer, and a dryer, so you wouldn’t have to hire anybody to do it for you. And I can have my grandkids come and visit, and they say I don’t have to do any yard work. There’s a nice swimming pool which is open when the city pools are open. And they haven’t been open because of the COVID. The people taking the tour had to wear a mask. It was well kept up. One or two of the apartments that we’ve looked up were still under renovation. After residents leave an apartment they always go in and redo everything.

When I toured Wyndmoor of Castleton, the first thing is that it smelled bad, smelled terrible. The menu showed that there were not many choices. They had a soup and salad category. There was never any salad listed, it was always a soup. The staff was okay. The inhabitants did not seem happy there. You would say hi, and you might get a hi back or not. One thing about the independent living, they had a nice apartment, but you could not get to the outside without calling the front desk and having a door unlocked. That’s not what I call independent living.
I did not have the meal, but I go back to the smell. The menu was skimpy. No fresh fruit and vegetables, no salads, soups only. They had definite times of the day when you would go to eat. It wasn’t restaurant style. The dining area was spacious, and it was very dark in there.
The first thing that was brought up when I met the person who gave me the tour was if I was going to use Medicaid. I thought that was kind of strange. The rooms that I was looking at were in poor repair. They did not have a beauty salon. They had limited room for exercise equipment. They had transportation, and it seemed like two days a week between certain hours. They suggest you get your doctor’s appointments and stuff, but it seems like if you had to go to a doctor and wait very long, the two hours timeframe would be gone.

What we liked about The Forum at the Crossing was it was a relatively large community with good options for their fitness center for the people of that age, as well as a spacious dining room and patio, and an area for gardening. We went with the idea of having the independent care with the option to go into various levels of assistance. Their staff was really helpful.

My mother is at Westside Garden Plaza. It’s a beautiful 4-story building, like living in a hotel, it’s got its little problems, but overall we’ve been happy. She’s in independent living right now. The staff is wonderful, when I leave we sign in and sign out who were there to see, I’ll stand at the front desk, talk to the ladies there, and they’ve been wonderful. They have a very structured puzzle table, 350 to 750 pieces are preferred, and there’s TV in that area, so they can catch up on what’s on TV, and do the puzzle. I’ve been there and have seen cornhole, there’s a bus that takes them to doctor’s appointments, and last summer they were showing a baseball movie outside, and it was very sweet. They do have a menu, they order off a menu, mom wished there were healthy choices, and they have gone through a couple of cooks, but she would never be hungry. I even ate there a couple of times, and was pleasantly surprised.

Brookhaven at County Line is a very nice and clean place. The office was very nice and very informative. I also like the building. It was very well kept, and I’m assuming they do well because the upkeep of the building is in good shape. I have seen the dining room and the front area where they have couches, which are really nice and nicely decorated. I was able to see an apartment which is nicely done. It’s a beautiful apartment. They have a washer and dryer in each unit, so that’s nice.
The staff was very kind and very informative, and when she was showing the apartment, she was very patient, just letting us enjoy what we saw. When we opened one of the closets, it was nice because the washer and dryer were there, so it’s not like you could see it, you have to open up an area and it’s inside. They just have everything so immaculate. They showed us an apartment with the furniture in it so you can get an idea of what the furniture is like. We were very happy with it. It just looks nice. They took their time to show you the place and explain it. She was very friendly, and if you have any questions, you could call her. It’s just a super nice-looking place, and I like the way they kept it. The staff was very professional. Once they’re in, they have meals and activities. It was very nice. It’s also for 55 and older, which makes it good because my friend is 56 and she would be able to get in.

I visited a friend at Marquette. It goes from independent units and up. They have a very nice and roomy apartment. My friend said that there are a lot of activities and I know her husband plays pickleball every morning. They have three different places where you could eat and that’s included, but I did not eat there. They’re very pleased. I didn’t see that much. I just saw her apartment.

I’m at Crestwood Village South, and I love it here. It’s very nice and well kept. It’s a good value for the money. I like it very much. They have a lot of activities. Personally, I don’t join them, or I haven’t yet. There’s no reason for anybody to not have anything to do, as far as that goes. They have something going on all the time, every day of the week; Sunday you’re on your own. During the week, there are all kinds of different activities in your building, in other buildings, and the main clubhouse. They have everything here that you really need except the grocery store.
They don’t furnish your meals. I have a one-bedroom apartment and a little galley kitchen. You buy your own food. They have a cafeteria here if you want to go down there. I have not met that many staff, but the maintenance man that takes the trash out for each floor is really nice. The building manager is super nice. Everybody’s really nice. They come right away. It’s a good place. I’m satisfied. I think it’s reasonably priced.
