The Best Independent Living Communities in Lake County, IN

"I'm a resident of StoryPoint Chesterton. I like the community, the people here are fantastic, the food is good, and the amenities they have is really good. We're enjoying ourselves here. It's a nice place to be. Our one-bedroom apartment is a nice size. It is just the two of us and the dog. It's small, but it's all that we need and it works out good for us. They have a cleaning service every other week that comes and cleans and they take good care of us. Every month, they have a variety of trips to different places on the shuttle bus and twice a week, they have a happy hour where they have people come in and entertain us. They have music and sometimes dancing. We all have a good time. We've been here almost three years. We enjoy the people. We enjoy the activities. The food is very good. When problems come up, they take care of it right away. We just love it here. The staff is very good and very helpful. It's a beautiful place. We liked it when we first saw it and that is the main reason we moved in. We thought it was brand new looking, very sharp and very clean. There are a lot of activities."

"Hanover Place was a beautiful facility. The residents were tremendous. There were a few people in the lobby area, and everybody was friendly. The management team met me, and was quick to show me a unit, even without putting in an application. It's a wonderful experience. It's very quiet and very mature. It's really for seniors. They have some 50-something-year-old seniors, but mainly 62 and older. It's very, very clean. It's spotless and just tremendous. The landscaping is wonderful. It's serene and also quiet. There were beautiful birds everywhere (at least the day I went). Flowers bloomed, and it was just nice. We weren't even full into the summer yet, and they had flowers everywhere out there. It's in Tinley Park, and it is a beautiful town. The little appetizer that I got there was fresh and good. I could have split it with two people. That's how much it was. It was a lot. I had a little bag to take with me. They had a very friendly environment. There's nothing I wouldn't recommend about that place."

"I have toured Tinley Court for my dad and it was wonderful. It's older but very clean and very quaint, and the rooms were beautiful and also very clean. The person who gave me the tour, Jana, was wonderful and very helpful. Their dining area looked really good. When I got there, they were doing exercises as a group in the chairs, and it just seemed like a good community for the seniors."

"I moved in. The people are nice and friendly and I feel safe. The staff was nice. They come to my apartment every Tuesday. The facility is clean. They have a gym. They had a barbecue this week. And they have a movie theater. It's a friendly atmosphere in here."

"It is like a family there! A kind, Christian community. My uncle and aunt were cared for so very well and they were happy there to the very end of their lives. Our family highly recommend them!"

"I toured Marian Village. They were a little less expensive, but the place itself just seemed so vibrant, alive, energetic, and bright. The place seemed very new and very updated. When you walked in, you were welcomed by the person at the front desk. The price, I think we could handle. The tough part is they require an entrance fee of $90,000. I have noticed reviews that are not too high, but when I did the tour, they had like a little bistro, and some residents were having omelets and things like that, and the food smelled amazing. They have a lot of events. They had a nice exercise room. They had laundry on each floor and seemed to have more dining areas. They give 400 points per month, and each point is equal to a dollar. You can use those points in the cafeteria or the dining area, and they don't carry over to the next month. They kind of give you an allotment, and then if you go over that, you start to pay. Mary Beth gave me the tour. She knew all the residents. She's very good and very thorough. Everything was so clean. There wasn't a spot on the carpeting. There wasn't a whole lot of carpeting. There was more of the vinyl plank flooring type of things. The dining room was set for dinner, and they had cloth napkins, glasses, and silverware. Everything seemed to be clean. Throughout the whole tour inside the rooms, in the laundry rooms, or the dining area, there was no stale odor or anything like that as you toured it. It was very clean, not like bleach clean or anything like that. It was just a fresh, clean environment."

"Village Green Active is a fine, excellent, caring community that keeps the residents involve in all sorts of activities. They have transportation, breakfast, laundry, doctor and programs throughout the week. "

"I was very pleased with everything I saw at Residences at Merrillville Lakes. The apartments were spacious and modern. The appliances and everything seemed updated. The person who gave me the tour was very knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating. I was pleased with the pool and the exercise room."

"The staff is very responsive. My room has a bedroom, a living room, a kitchenette, and a bathroom. The food is very good almost all the time. They have a number of different kinds of activities, and I do exercise, but apart from that they have other things like bingo and movies. I chose Hartsfield because mostly my family is within 15 minutes from here. "

"I toured Park Place of St. John. It's a very nice place. It's well-kept and well-managed, and nothing is out of place. The garages were small, but everything was clean. The staff was excellent and very informative. She showed me everything I needed to see, including some stuff I would probably never use. She showed me everything that was at that facility. The rooms are smaller than the ones I live in, but that's okay."

"My mother will be moving into Kirby Manor Apartments. It's a senior community but it's not assisted living. It's independent living. My mom currently is living off of Social Security only, so it's based on your income and it's very reasonable. It is an independent living, so you have to be able to provide for yourself. Even though it is a community of seniors of 55 and over, you still have to be able to clean and bathe yourself. They have daily activities. It is two floors, so there is a laundry facility on both floors. They have a treadmill and exercise bikes and stuff like that. They have a small facility room for that. They have a reading room, a puzzle room, and their actual dining room. They can either dine with other people or they can dine in their own apartment. They serve you and they have a menu there. They have a chef on-hand that does the catering there. They had one-bedroom and two-bedroom, and we looked at both. The one-bedroom was very adequate. There's plenty of room. It has a kitchenette that goes into the living room, and the bathroom is wide enough. They had a closet space and it's perfect for independent living. Those that don't want to be a burden on their family but want to be able to live by themselves, it's perfect for that. They have haircutting once a month. Somebody from the outside comes and they set up for haircut appointments. They had an outdoor area and a little patio terrace that looked very cute. As far as cleanliness, it was pretty well kept. It's a little older, but it was still clean. The lady during the tour was very friendly and very informative. The maintenance guy was very upbeat and friendly. It's an older facility, but there was no chipping paint or anything like that."

"Lake Park Senior Apartments was very nice. Everything was updated and it was decorated very nicely. I got to see a room and it was beautiful. They also had like a separate villa on the property (several of them). The villas were beautiful, too. The property manager I met was excellent. They also had activities."

Lester's place is located in East Chicago Indiana. The property is a 5-unit apartment building with 2 levels of stairs. The property is newly remolded. Each united is fully furnished with all utilities paid. The bedrooms are shared living with 2 people per room. There is a total of 11 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms on the property. There is a TV in the living room that has streaming channels for our guests. There is free Wifi for guests to log into. We supply bedding for our guests who require assistance. The property is close to restaurants, and bus transportation. The property is 25 minutes from downtown Chicago. The units are professionally cleaned once a month.

"Wittenberg Village is an excellent facility. Actually, it's not a facility, it's like a village, and they age in place. You can go into a home or a villa home, to the assisted gardens, the price is reasonable, it's clean, and it's nice too. It' a total age in place, it's reasonable, clean, and nice. The staff that helped me out during my visit was very knowledgeable and very friendly. There's social distancing going on, so it's not like you can roam all over the place. They have a fitness room that I saw, they have their activities, they have the transportation like the other places do. Things are just starting to reopen up."
