Columbus, Ohio, is one of the largest cities in the state and home to the renowned University of Ohio and the University of Ohio’s medical research school. It also boasts several interesting attractions that might be of interest to visiting family members, including the Motorcycle Hall of Fame and the Columbus Cultural Arts Center. The city has different outdoor options for recreation, including the Scioto Mile, a string of parks on either side of the Scioto River.
Seniors unable to manage the effects of chronic medical conditions may benefit from care in a skilled nursing facility, which averages $6,996 per month in Columbus, according to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020. Skilled nursing facilities provide residents with 24-hour care, including help with the tasks of daily living and personal grooming, plus professional medical treatment and care. However, some seniors may need extra help with personal care and mobility but not require medical supervision or be able to afford nursing home accommodations. For these individuals, an assisted living community, offering help with personal care, or a home health care aide, who cares for seniors in their home and helping with light medical care, may be a better fit.
We’ve gathered information about the costs of nursing home care in Columbus, as well as resources for seniors who may prefer different types of long term care.

The staff is friendly, they’re cooperative, we’ve been pleased with our interactions with them. I have not been in the dining room, he often has had his meals in his room, but the food looks really good. His room is clean and adequate, and he has a roommate, and it’s nice. The outdoor spaces look very inviting. They have tables, benches, and umbrellas for the sun, they are landscaped, and they’re very pleasant.

Wesley Glen Retirement Community is amazing, I have a brother there and he is doing great. But their rehab is a nightmare!
First I want to say there are maybe 2 aides that have been good. I can’t say that about the nurses especially the male nurse. My mother, age 102 and 2/3 years old, has been there for a couple of weeks now and if someone isn’t there all the time she does not get the treatment she should. They are slow to respond to her call. They have tried to change her medication from every 4 hours to every 6 hours and she can only take tylenol for pain. One Nurse tried to make her go 9 hours without it, worried about her liver. Excuse me but at 102 yrs the liver is not the most important thing. Giving her relief from a broken clavicle is what is important! And meals for her are a challenge when we are not there for her. She only has use of one hand, her non dominant one, and other one was banged up pretty bad too and is weak. We have tried to be upbeat, thankful for the help and very nice to all the aides and nurses. They are surly and it is a challenge. Today was the last straw. My mother had to sit in her dirty pants for 45 minutes and my sister had to go down and demand help. 45 minutes for a 102 year old woman with delicate skin. There is no excuse for that! Not only can it cause skin problems but it does not help her ability to heal mentally. This is abusive! If these people don’t like there job and can’t give loving care to our elderly then it’s time to move on. You don’t treat people this way. When they do come into her room they treat her like it is a job to do and get out fast. There is no conversing, no letting them know that someone cares. Most of the surliness and lack of compassion or human warmth is coming from nurses and aides ; PT, OT and Activities staff have been professional and warm. My mother is so upset about her treatment that she cried, and tears do not come easy to her, she said this is hard. At one point she even asked if she could go back to the hospital where they treat her better. This is not what I expected from Wesley Glen and am sad that this is what is happening. I will not recommend this place to anyone.

I went to look at McNaughten Pointe Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and I liked what I saw when I was there. There were a lot of activities going on. There were a lot of people in the hallways, both nurses and residents. There were many caregivers, so that made me think that my mom would get good care there. We walked around, and she showed me different areas that they had. If my mom were to go there, it would be a semi-private room. They do have private rooms available for an additional cost. It’s more of like a hospital type. They have a toilet and a sink, but there’s a communal shower. They were showing a Tina Turner video in the activity room, so the residents were all gathered around. They do offer therapy. It’s more of a traditional nursing home, but they have outside areas and a really large courtyard. They have communal areas with chairs and stuff. Everybody was friendly and nice. The facility was nice and clean, but it’s just not home.

Staffing really cared about the well being of the patients and the patients families. The halls were very organized related to the illness of the patient. The administrator demonstrated a caring for the employees. There were no foul smells in the halls. The patients seemed pretty content. Now the dining area didnt seem too fancy, compared to other rehab facilities. The dining seems pretty small, barely enough room to seat all the people and the supporting staff. I found myself almost hitting my head on a hanging light above a table. Dietary doors were right there where we can hear almost everything said in the kitchen. Never the less, the staff were content and the atmosphere seemed bright. I would recommend Minerva Park to anyone needing rehab services in the Columbus Ohio area.

My mom was a resident of Taylor Springs Health Campus. They helped her with activities of daily living, provided nourishment and nutrition, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Unfortunately, they were short staffed, but the staff did as well as they could, and they tried their best to prevent her from false and unnecessary incontinence events and things like that.
Her room was exceptional.
They had a family brunch while we were out there and the food was delicious. They have a very nice rehabilitation gym, and a beautiful campus where you can walk your loved ones. If they have mobility challenges you can walk them around the campus. Sometimes the staff will walk your relatives around so they can get fresh air. It is a nice, locked facility where only certain members of your family have access. They also have lovely dining rooms for the staff. Then they have events for the residents that are just lovely with live music. They encourage folks to get dressed up for those events, so it gives it just a light, cheerful, going out to dinner type feel versus being in a place of confinement.
Their physical therapy really did wonders for Mom. When she went in, she was unable to walk, but when she left the facility, she was able to at least negotiate a short walk into the car, so that was a tremendous accomplishment.

The nurse proceeded to apologize to the paramedics stating that it was not an emergency call. As it turned out, they overdosed our loved one and the ER had to give our loved one NARCAN. The nurse that night happened to be the "nurse of the month". The next instance occurred when we told the nurse manager that we thought our loved one had a UTI. The nurse manager dismissed it and a day or so later we had to beg the nurse to call the paramedics again when our loved one was unresponsive. As it turned out, our loved one turned septic due to a UTI that should have been treated. The nurse in the hospital ICU also told us that the ER had to give our loved one NARCAN again. After going through septic shock our loved survived, but was never the same again suffering from permanent damage. Nurse Patty is not nice.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Columbus, OH
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
