Known for its beautiful white sand beaches and rich history, Pensacola is a city of over 53,600 residents in the Florida Panhandle. The city offers a high quality of life for seniors, who make up 18.3% of the population. With its low living costs, warm temperatures and access to world-class health care, it’s no surprise Pensacola is considered one of the top places to retire in the United States.

As seniors age, they may require a little extra help with daily tasks. Luckily, there are a number of assisted living facilities in the Pensacola area that can provide assistance with household chores and personal care services, along with wellness programming, social activities and rehabilitative therapies. The average cost of this type of care in Pensacola is $4,323 per month, slightly higher than other areas in Florida.

Seniors and families considering long-term care can use this guide as a starting point to learn about assisted living, including how much these services cost, what other options are available and where to go for financial assistance. It also features some of the benefits and drawbacks of retirement in Pensacola and a list of local resources to support seniors’ needs.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Pensacola

All long-term care facilities in Pensacola, including assisted living communities, are licensed and regulated by Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration. The agency’s Bureau of Health Facility Regulation conducts inspections of facilities prior to their initial licensure and then subsequently every two years for re-licensure.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Pensacola

  • Pensacola’s coastal location offers access to expansive beaches, numerous public parks and plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, including fishing and water sports. The area is also rich in history, with numerous museums and notable sights for seniors to visit, as well as a vibrant dining scene.
  • With its sunny, subtropical climate, Pensacola is an ideal spot for seniors looking to escape chilly winters in favor of warm year-round weather. Temperatures typically stay above 42 degrees, and the area sees an average of 224 sunny days. However, Pensacola does experience stormy weather during hurricane season, so it’s important for seniors to exercise proper precautions.
  • The Pensacola area is a great option for seniors looking to maximize their retirement income. At an index rating of 87.3, the overall cost of living is lower than both the U.S. average of 100 and the statewide median of 102.8. Seniors will notice savings, particularly in the cost of housing, transportation, groceries and health care.
  • Seniors can further benefit from Florida’s tax-friendly policies. The state doesn’t levy a tax on any form of retirement income, including Social Security benefits, pensions, IRAs and 401(k)s. Floridians are also free from paying state income tax or inheritance tax.
  • Seniors in Pensacola are exposed to above-average crime rates. The city receives an index rating of 35.7 for violent crime and 61.4 in terms of property crime, which can be compared to the U.S. averages of 22.7 and 35.4, respectively, in the same categories. Most long-term care facilities provide security features and safety measures for residents’ peace of mind.
  • Escambia County Area Transit (ECAT) provides reliable transportation to residents of the greater Pensacola area. The system operates a fixed-route bus service along with several free neighborhood trolleys. Seniors are eligible for highly discounted bus fares.
  • The Pensacola area is served by numerous world-class health facilities specializing in geriatric care, including HCA Florida West Hospital, Baptist Hospital and Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola, which is home to the area’s only nationally certified Comprehensive Stroke Center

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Pensacola

Seniors who need help with long-term care costs can turn to Florida’s Assistive Care Services and Medicaid Long-Term Care plans. The programs cover the cost of services at assisted living facilities, but they don’t cover room and board. The MLTC plan does, however, negotiate rates on behalf of participants.

Florida also provides optional state supplementation for seniors who receive Federal SSI benefits. The state allows family supplementation without affecting Medicaid eligibility or benefits provided the payments are made to the provider and not the resident.

Learn more about these programs, plus who’s eligible, on our Assisted Living in Florida page.
