St. Louis is a major American city that retains its friendly Midwestern charm. The city has a population of 300,576, 13.1% of whom are senior citizens. As home to two major research universities, the city has a variety of high-quality medical care options, including the Barnes-Jewish Hospital, which is ranked the best in the state and #18 in the entire country by U.S. News. According to Genworth’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey, nursing home costs in the area are low compared to the U.S. median. While a semiprivate room costs $5,355 per month in St. Louis, the national median is much higher at $7,756.
Nursing homes are designed for seniors who need high levels of care 24/7. Staff in these communities can help with medication, mobility and morning hygiene routines, and skilled nurses and rehabilitative therapists are available on-site. Because nursing homes tend to be more expensive than other types of senior care, people who only need some of these services may be more comfortable with assisted living or home health care.
This guide provides information on the cost of nursing homes in St. Louis and surrounding cities and the resources available to seniors in the area.

Mom is at Bethesda Southgate for rehab. She has a private room with her own private bath. They bring in the meals to them because apparently since COVID, they no longer have a shared dining room, which used to be nice to get you out of the room and socialize.
On a normal day, the staff comes in and gets them one time of day for PT and one time of day for OT. They stop in and ask them if they want snacks. They also have their own TV. Most of them are in wheelchairs or on walkers because they’re rehabbing from some type of injury, so there is a common area they can walk out to where years before they would do a lot more activities. Now it seems they only do one activity a day, but one is better than none. The other day they had bingo. Some days they watch a movie.

Staff was helpful during normal business hours. Evenings and weekends were terrible. Staff including supervisor and director handled a call from former resident who had my mother’s room regarding bed bugs in a very unprofessional manner, treated my mother like it was her fault that the previous resident possibly had bed bugs. Was unable to visit my mom for 2 1/2 days due to work schedule. When I arrived, I found her half sitting in the chair in just a shirt with altered mental status and temp of 101. Her nurse didn’t even want to come to the room to see her and when she did, she acted shocked to see my mom in that condition but instead of offering to help she called a CNA to the room to get vitals on her. I requested a call for ambulance and was told that they couldn’t call until the supervisor was notified. I called 911 myself, still not nurse in the room to assess the situation. Staff would not give EMS a current medication sheet. When the supervisor arrived she was more concerned with having me sign out AMA instead of being concerned for the person that the facility was supposed to be providing care for. I would not recommend this facility to anyone.

The staff seemed to be pretty friendly. At times, they come across and somewhat cold, but I do think part of it was due to the fact that it was so busy there. But for the most part, they were useful in helping guide us. The facility itself was nothing special, and had several floors on which housed certain types of residents. In order to go up in floors, you actually had to walk through the intermediate floors, which made it very interesting, since there were always residents hanging around the hallways. As a result, you really end up saying ‘hi’ or exchanging a few words with the residents, even before you end up to the room of the resident you were trying to see. The room that my resident was in seemed a little isolated, but that wasn’t really anyone’s fault. What it did mean was that people didn’t come by often, save for the staff, whom my resident seemed to like a lot. We would talk about the activities they would do here, and it does seem like the center tries very hard to socially engage the residents, doing a series of events throughout the week. There were common areas where a few residents spent time, which was nice to see.All in all, I liked the place. The staff is nice (although at times, they seemed to not all be on the same page with regards to the schedule of my resident), and they seem to care about the residents. My resident was personally not happy to be there, but I don’t think that had anything to do with the center, but to do more with his general situation (not being independent). But he spoke well of the center. I haven’t seen him in quite some time, but I feel confident that if he’s not out of the center yet, he’s being treated well at Parkside.

We had to put my husband in the hospital, and they are going to put him in a nursing home. He was in there about eight years ago for rehab. I liked it because they never knew when I was going to pop in. It is affiliated with St. Anthony’s Hospital. The place is clean, I like that there is no way you can smell urine or something. The smell in it is more like a home environment. It is comfortable, and they make you feel that you can come visit any time that you want. They don’t have a set time for family members to come and visit. You can spend overnight with them if you want to; it is OK because they have their own room. So I think it is kind of a push to make them want to get better — the homelike environment. It is a nursing home, but it has got some sense of a home in it. It is a professional but a homey environment. The caregivers are very attentive to the residents. Like I said, I like it, and if I had to pay a little bit out of my pocket, I wouldn’t mind because it is worth it.

It was very expensive and was $610 per night, which was unbelievable.
Because of COVID, they weren’t using the various rooms. There’s a special dining room if you wanted to invite other family members over for the evening and they had kind of a group room with a lot of windows and a fireplace and a TV, and my mom wasn’t able to do any of that. Her room was fairly nice, though. It’s an older place, but it was nice.

My sister put my mother in St. Johns Place. I’ve visited her a few times and the facility is always clean. It’s well maintained and it doesn’t smell, and that was a big thing that surprised me because I know even in the best senior homes sometimes, patients can have accidents and it might take a while to get to them, but that’s not the problem here because it never smells or anything.
The employees are pretty pleasant. The ones that seem to know my mother are pretty nice to her. They’re not the friendliest, but they’re somewhat professional and very helpful. The social worker is extremely nice, and I love her. I’m just glad that it’s clean and my mom seems to be taken care of. She had dropped a lot of weight and she has since bounced back from that, which is amazing. She has put back on some weight. When I asked her about the food, she said, "Not bad, they just don’t give enough." She is diabetic, so it’s good that they don’t give her too much.
The dining room is clean, spacious, and has a lot of tables. They were getting ready to serve ice cream to the residents at that time. It seems like they try to do little activities with them, which is pretty nice. The day I brought her back this past Saturday, they had something going on in the backyard. The building is dated, but at least it’s clean.
When mom first got there, she had the room to herself. It is a room made for two people, and she now has a roommate. It’s no-frills. It’s big enough for two beds and a little space in between the two. There’s another room where the bathroom is and inside the bathroom are two curio cabinets and they have their names taped up to each one to indicate which is which. There isn’t a shower in their room, and I’ve never seen where they shower. The bathroom has a sink, those two curio cabinets, and a toilet, and it’s spacious.
When I was there, one resident was kind of having a little meltdown and they were all on top of it. The people that I had to deal with were all pretty nice. They do things for them. My mom’s hair was done when I saw her.

- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
