Skokie is a moderately large suburb in the northern reaches of the Chicagoland area. Home to 66,000 residents, 20% of whom are seniors aged 65 and over, Skokie has a thriving social scene for older adults and plenty of services to support seniors. World-class hospitals in the area include Skokie Hospital and Swedish Hospital, both of which have senior health programs and accept Medicare and Medicaid. According to the Genworth 2021 Cost of Care Survey, nursing home care in Skokie costs $7,445 a month. A semiprivate room in Illinois averages $6,266, while the national average is higher at $7,908.
Nursing homes offer a higher level of care than most other senior living arrangements, such as assisted living or home health care. Typical features of nursing care homes include 24/7 health condition monitoring and supervision for seniors who need it, medication management and skilled nursing aides on call around the clock. Nursing care is not appropriate for every senior, and those with less need for care might find more affordable arrangements for their needs.
This guide covers the costs of different care types in more detail. It also lists some resources that aid Skokie’s seniors.

I visit my Aunt at Cambridge on a weekly basis it is a wonderful facility. She is a picky eater and the head of the kitchen staff came to see her and discussed her needs- he was very nice. The staff remember me and always greet me while visiting. The nurses are always able to answer any questions I have. She has a really nice sun filled room that over looks the patio. We enjoy sitting outside when it is warm and we enjoy the live music on Fridays! My aunt loves it here and I could not imagine having her anyplace else. I would not hesitate to recommend this rehab center to anyone in need. My family and I are thrilled that we found this place.

My 94 year old mother was recently in rehab at Warren Barr Lieberman Skokie following surgery for a broken elbow, broken vertebrae and Covid. The care, if you can call it that, was untenable. The first morning she was there the aide came in her room & cranked up the back of her bed. My mother was in agony from the broken vertebrae, asked her to stop and she wouldn’t respond or stop. My mother would need to use the restroom and would wait an hour and a half before an aide would show up. She would have a mess in her diaper, tell the aide when she finally showed up and the aide just walked out and did not come back. Another time she called to be cleaned up as she had another mess in her diaper. Her breakfast was there and they told her she had to eat her breakfast first before they would clean her up. They left her sitting in a messed diaper. The physical therapist had come into the room a bit later and was the one that cleaned her up. How can you hire people who don’t care about the way they treat the patients they are hired to care for? We had to hire a private caretaker to be there, which we should not have had to do. After 5 days, which was the soonest we could move her due to her positive Covid test, we transferred her to another facility where the care was exemplary, which is what should be expected. Not the disregard of the patient’s well-being, as was exhibited prior to her being transferred.

This is a long term care facility providing services for persons with chronic mental illness. (The sister facility next door, Skokie Meadows I, provides skilled nursing services). Skokie Meadows is just off the main road and backs up to a safe residential area. Parking can be a challenge at times. Outdoor space, which is a modest sized patio area with seating, is provided for residents and is well utilized as most residents smoke. The interior of the building is always clean, but it is an older building and lacks aesthetic charm. There are common areas that are sufficient to meet resident needs, but since most residents do not spend all their time in their rooms, common areas can be full or crowded at times. Rooms are average to slightly above average size and most are shared. Finishes and fixtures are modest but adequate. The food is average and most residents do not complain. Staff provides kind, compassionate and skilled care aimed at maximizing resident’s abilities. There is a real commitment demonstrated by most staff to wholeheartedly serving their population of residents. Coordination with psychiatric physicians by care staff is generally well done and effective at helping meet resident needs.

Not that good at addressing my needs. Phone was too far for me to reach. not much PT. Food not good, chicken undercooked. What kind of place would send a 83 yr old lady home way too early with bad back to a blind spouse and house with stairs and hallway. None of my pain medicine sent home with me. Nurse was supposed to come but did not show up til end of week to write a prescription. No follow up PT showed up all week. Said they would come 10 days later. Had to keep calling to FiNALLY GET SOMEONE, was told PT was on vacation. Really??? Totally unacceptable! Was in pain and not strong enough to walk to toilet and then could not get up off toilet. NOT GOOD. Also what kind of care they set up for when I got home?Home care NOT GOOD. Fell 5 times due to weakness and pain. My children called Alden a few times after getting home for some answers and left messages for administrator for more care and no one even bothered to call back. Would never go to this place again! I would suggest finding a different place if you need good care.

My father is at Elevate Care Abington. It’s hit or miss. First of all, I don’t think they have enough staff, particularly seeing only a couple around several clients or people that need of care. So, they use agencies. Some of the people who come from the agencies are good and some of them are not. For these places to be considered forever homes for some people, my dad being one of them, I would never want this to be anybody’s forever home. The workers are transient, so that means that they could care less about the people. But that’s not all of them. It’s a lot with the agencies coming and going. And it’s frightening for an elderly person to see somebody new every day draw their blood. So, the level of consistency is weak. You have a few people that work hard and they carry everybody. I would say 30% of the staff in terms of nursing care are CNAs, and they care and they are working hard. And the other 70% are just sitting around the nurse’s stations on their cell phones.
It’s got a good living community. The rooms are decent and nice. They do have a variety of food and it’s decent. They try to make different types of foods that people from multiple cultures would not mind eating. So there’s diversity and variety in the cooking. This spans a bunch of different ethnic groups, and they have been mindful of that.
The place is fairly clean. There are no funny smells or anything like that when I come in. They keep a really good schedule with the food. They have designated time for people to eat. The activities director tries to get everybody involved. The reason they’re getting a 3-star rating is that they have some exceptional people working there and then a few, and then everybody else. If you tell them about something that you don’t like or that you’re seeing, they are responsive. They’ll work with you. It’s just that it doesn’t stick.

What I liked best about Elevate Care Chicago North was it was clean and you saw people cleaning up, and doing things. What I didn’t like about it was the staff appeared to be indifferent to the residents. I saw some things that I did not like. I heard somebody crying for help when I got off an elevator and I don’t mean this once or twice; it was prolonged. While I was on that floor, I heard that resident crying for help a lot.
The one who gave us the tour was very good and she went out of her way to try and find somebody to help that person and it took her three people. She talked to three people before somebody went and took care of that resident. The tour person was knowledgeable and friendly, and she wasn’t from that floor, but she did do those things. If she hadn’t been there with us giving us the tour, how long would that person had to cry for help?
We’re not taking my mother-in-law there. We got there after lunch and 75% of the memory care residents in that nursing home were in bed at 1:00 or 2:00 in the afternoon. I understand about naps, but not everybody takes a nap. It wasn’t a hellhole, but it just wasn’t for us. They had a salon and a dining area. I know the neighborhood they’re in and it’s close to us. It would be very convenient for us, but that’s not enough. I didn’t see a whole lot of an outside area for folks to sit and enjoy the weather when it’s appropriate. It smelled good. There was no urine smell, no old people smell, so that was a good thing.

Everybody is treated like family. The care is second to none, and wouldn’t hesitate in recommending the facility to friends and family.
When I first came in to hear about Dobson, Cathy was all ears. She listened to my concerns, my relatives needs, and I immediately felt relived knowing I lucked out and found a winning facility.
Call in meetings are set up to constantly keep me updated with all of the department heads. When I do stop by to visit, I’m greeted immediately, and always with enthusiasm. In short, the staff are kind caring people.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Skokie, IL
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
