Just outside of Chicago, Glenview is a village that’s primarily residential. Over 1 in 5 of the city’s 47,308 residents are seniors aged 65 or older. For medical care, the village’s older adults may turn to the Glenbrook Hospital, which includes joint replacements and spinal, neurologic and vision care among its specialties.
In Chicago, according to the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey, the average nursing home resident pays $8,076 per month for a semiprivate room, which is slightly higher than the corresponding national rate of $7,756. Nursing homes are relatively expensive, but in return, they provide advanced levels of care, with residents able to access around-the-clock care and attention from professionals like licensed nurses and therapists. Seniors who don’t rely on such high levels of care may find that assisted living or home health care is a better, more budget-friendly setup.
The next part of this guide looks more closely at the costs of various forms of senior care. Then, it concludes with some resources that can meet a variety of the needs of Glenview’s older adults.

My mother went to Glenview Terrace after hospitalization. I have everything positive and no negatives whatsoever to recommend Glenview Terrace: caring staff, a lot of attention, communication with us as a family, and part of the caregiving team. All of the staff we interacted with were always caring, well informed, professional, went above and beyond in their efforts to help us, particularly during the trials as a result of being separated from our mom as a result of the COVID restrictions. They were one of the first in the state to get all of their residents and staff immunized with vaccines against COVID. As a result of that, two weeks ago they were able to open up for limited face-to-face visitation, with all kinds of precautions in place. My mom was happy there, the care that she received was immediate, and responsive, and caring. The activities director was a sweet, young man that my mom said we were going to adopt in our family. The rehab services that she received brought her a long way during the time that she was there. They were able to get her back up and walking with assistance. Her personal care needs were well met. However, she died recently.

I checked out other nursing homes in the area. Grosse Pointe Manor stood out because of the warmth that I witnessed between the staff and the residents. Also I saw many residents walking whereas at other places, residents were in wheelchairs only in order to keep them from falling. Also private pay and medicaid residents were grouped together–not assigned to different floors. And two staff people had their own relatives living at Grosse Pointe Manor, a sign that they trust GPM. GPM has lived up to my expectations and my brother is happy to live there.

Our mother-in-law spent a little over 6 weeks in rehab at CBV after a hip fracture. She had been 89 years old, mentally sharp, and living alone before this. We felt so fortunate to find a bed for her here. The nursing staff and aides were friendly, caring, compassionate, and so understanding of her age group and her physical and emotional challenges. Her physical and occupational therapists pushed her to do a little more each day, and she did finally turn the corner, was able to be discharged, and is now enjoying living in assisted living. We are grateful beyond words for all they did.

We visited a place called Greek American; it was a gorgeous place, but we couldn’t afford it. It was probably the most beautiful facility I have ever seen. Their secured unit, you have to have a code to get in the elevator and go up there. But you walk in there, and you don’t even see a nurse’s desk. It is kind of hidden behind some walls or something. What they have upfront looks like a porch with rocking chairs, so the residents can sit on the porch and rock. They had several dining areas that were very home-looking. Really, it was a gorgeous, elegant place, and even though it was more expensive than I could afford, it actually was less expensive than those other places, which I don’t think were any nicer than where my husband is at now.

My mother passed away 3 years ago just a month shy of 104. I acknowledged the wonderful care my mother received during her time in Assisted Living and the Nursing home.
Addolorata Villa provided excellent care, kept residents in all areas engaged. The level of care in all sections was consistent and of high quality. Some of my best memories come from special events such as the celebration of those 100 years old and over.
From the quality of the food, cleanliness of rooms, the comfort level and furnishing throughout the Villa demonstrated top quality. Most important is the staff. Not only did they provide support to my mother, but to me as well. They also did not forget about my mother after she passed away. I cannot adequately describe my feelings from the card and note and remembrance in a Mass over the past few years.
Thank you

I was a resident of Brentwood North Nursing & Rehabilitation Centre. It was great, but it was just really confined. They had more cameras than a casino in there. Their staff was more hands on, and food was always brought to you. They were more cautious when I first came because they did not know me. Everybody knew everybody’s name. The food was definitely restaurant quality and you could eat as much as you want over there. They were rated as one of the top 5 of the State. They were very, very close, and very confined, and that is because Covid is still present there.
It is a 1-story, and everybody was in wheelchair. They were very clean, and their maintenance was excellent. Everything was done inside, and they had a lot of people that really needed nursing, and at one point I did, too. You’re more than likely to have a roommate. They had activities. Different hallways would have bingos and things like that.
They will take every penny that you have to your name. They’ll take disability and Medicaid. They will take everything, and they give you $30 to play with for a month. That is standard nursing home law currently. You have full-time nursing with doctors, nurses, and CNAs, and things of that nature. When I got there, they had just been bought. They remodeled 90% of the rooms, new roof, new sprinkler system, and they had patios.

I was so nervous to transition my dad into a "nursing home" because all the stories I have heard from my friends. He was at another facility for only 2 weeks and they wanted to discharge him. It was a Friday and I had no idea what to do or who to call. A friend referenced me to call Citadel and now I know why. Megan took my phone call that Friday night and I swear she spent the whole evening with me and my family to help us. It was a night and day experience compared to the rehab center he was at. I wish we brought him here in the first place! They made the transition so easy for my dad and I. Everyone is like my family now, when I come in not only do they care and keep me updated on my dad but they also care about me and how I am doing. The nursing aides go above and beyond for my father in ways I couldn’t have even imagined. I am so incredibly thankful for my Citadel family. If you couldn’t tell I HIGHLY recommend this place!

I am WELL acquainted with this facility!! My husband lived there for THREE years and I visited almost EVERY day!!
I can state without reservations that this is one of the top nursing homes in the state of Illinois. The nursing and CNA staff are all front-line-warriors when it comes to their devotion, loving care, excellent skills, accurate diligence and great patience. The administration is very responsive to resident and family needs. The food is very good and attractively presented.. The activities personnel are very devoted to providing mentally stimulating activities for the residents drawing out of their own years of service to the seniors there in the facility. The facility itself has recently been remodeled and upgraded making it a pleasure to see. I have visited several other nursing homes across the communities just north of Chicago and this is the ONLY one I would recommend.

My uncle was a patient at St. Benedict’s for several weeks from May through July of this year following a series of small strokes. I was very impressed with the quality of the staff overall, from the friendly receptionist at the front desk to the bedside staff. Most of the nurses, and several in particular, were so patient and kind with my uncle when he became confused. I felt that the majority of staff were very dedicated and went out of their way to make sure that he and his wife had what they needed for a comfortable stay. The physical therapists were wonderful too, encouraging him to do his best. The food was good and the dining staff accommodating. The residents looked clean and well-cared for. As a nurse for 29 years, I do not often have such good comments to make about long-term care facilities, but felt compelled to make the effort here. This place is truly a blessing to those who need long term care and rehab.

My Aunt has been a Dobson Plaza resident since August 2020. In light of her dementia, and as her sole Caregiver, I had to make a number of heart-wrenching decisions on her behalf. Fortunately in making the long term care decision, I was blessed to be able to interface with Dobson Plaza’s Assistant Administrator. The Assistant Administrator’s caring attitude, extensive knowledge, and incredible experience was invaluable in helping me make a very tough decision. Now, 6 months later, I view Dobson Plaza as a trusted partner. My Aunt is definitely being cared for and supported by a very compassionate, well-qualified, highly professional Staff. I looked at a number of alternative long term care options prior to selecting Dobson Plaza. I know I made the right choice. Every day I say two things to myself. First, "thank you Dobson Plaza Staff for keeping my Aunt safe and secure during this challenging stage in her life." Second, "thank you Dobson Plaza Staff for giving me piece of mind and for significantly reducing my stress level during our global pandemic."

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Glenview, Illinois
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
