Evanston, IL, has close to 73,500 residents, and 11,460 of them are aged 65 and older. These seniors can receive comprehensive care at leading-edge medical facilities including Evanston Hospital and AMITA Health Saint Francis Hospital Evanston. They also have access to multiple highly rated geriatricians here and in nearby cities.
Nursing homes can accommodate individuals whose care needs require out-of-home placement but not hospitalization. These long-term care facilities provide skilled nurses, nursing aides, therapies and other services along with 24/7 monitoring. This elevated level of support typically costs significantly more than other senior accommodations, especially in Evanston. According to the Genworth Financial 2020 Cost of Care Survey, nursing home care in this city costs $8,076 per month, while the national average is $7,756. Home health care or assisted living can offer a more suitable and affordable option if nursing home-level care isn’t warranted.
This guide discusses different senior care options in Evanston and their costs. It also shares local government and nonprofit resources that support the city’s elders and their families.

My Aunt has been a Dobson Plaza resident since August 2020. In light of her dementia, and as her sole Caregiver, I had to make a number of heart-wrenching decisions on her behalf. Fortunately in making the long term care decision, I was blessed to be able to interface with Dobson Plaza’s Assistant Administrator. The Assistant Administrator’s caring attitude, extensive knowledge, and incredible experience was invaluable in helping me make a very tough decision. Now, 6 months later, I view Dobson Plaza as a trusted partner. My Aunt is definitely being cared for and supported by a very compassionate, well-qualified, highly professional Staff. I looked at a number of alternative long term care options prior to selecting Dobson Plaza. I know I made the right choice. Every day I say two things to myself. First, "thank you Dobson Plaza Staff for keeping my Aunt safe and secure during this challenging stage in her life." Second, "thank you Dobson Plaza Staff for giving me piece of mind and for significantly reducing my stress level during our global pandemic."

My friend is in Alden Estates of Evanston. She is getting better. She does have some complaints with the place. Some of the night staff is not as pleasant as she feels that they should be, but she is getting the therapy, and she’s moving along a lot faster than I thought she would. She also had a urinary tract infection, and that definitely affected her balance and her thinking. She was like a totally different person, but she’s back to her old self now. The food is good. She’s happy with it. There are two beds in the room, but there’s no one in the other bed. There’s small little things, like the TV wasn’t working for the first couple of days. Also she was not too happy with some of the nighttime staff.
The entire place has been remodeled within the last eight years, but they’re all gone now. They have a beautiful dining facility, but because of COVID, they’re still all eating in their room. The nursing staff is good. They have been working with me and they’re doing anything I ask for them. Many times, she doesn’t really speak up too much, so I’m doing the speaking for her. Overall, the actual nursing staff is good. They’re not the best, but they’re good.
The facility is clean. They have a hair salon in there as well as a lot of social activities that go on. She doesn’t participate too much in that, but they have them. The main floor is beautifully done. It’s a very nice place to sit and chat. They have two outdoor patios, which today is beautiful to have.

Terrible customer service,. My sister had lived there 10 years. I called them (guardian) to my sister that she had a piece of mail sent there. They told me that they received it. Okay great! I explained that I was my sister’s legal guardian. Or my sister would like to pick up her mail in person. This doesn’t happen often. But for them to deny her mail pick-up. I call and they are so argumentative on the phone. I leave a message for L. Evans on her voice mail and she doesn’t even respond back to you. What kind of customer service do they run. Terrible!!!! They act like I am doing something wrong. I am sick of there lousy attitude. They could have just let my sister have her mail. Instead they send it back to the post office. So it either gets lost in the mail or delayed a week. I cannot understand why they make this a big issue. You could have easily let my sister have her MAIL. You know she couldn’t forward her address. No stars if it would let me, they have no respect for past clients that lived there. You should be ashamed of yourself!!!!

I received horrible treatment and witnessed horrible treatment of many others. The bed linen was never changed after repeated requests. Several requests were made for food but the CNA never put in the request and when asked they never apologized or tried to rectify the situation. In fact my source of food was brought in by a friend EVERDAY, otherwise my survival and strength would not have happened so quickly. The nurses station would never answer calls. God forbid you had a medical situation on the weekend because there was hardly any staff there to help.I never received help to the Restroom. I was never taken to the showeroom. The bed linen was never changed after repeated requests. The bugs there were rampant. I was left in the room with a man covered in feces for two days.My laundry had to be taken home by a friend to be washed just so I could have clean clothes. Again I requested my laundry be washed but it was NEVER picked up. The employees with talk loudly and slam doors throughout the night, so therefore I never slept. I had to report this place to the Board of heath and I would hope that everyone who was either there or had family members there report them. This kind of treatment MUST STOP!

My father is at Elevate Care Abington. It’s hit or miss. First of all, I don’t think they have enough staff, particularly seeing only a couple around several clients or people that need of care. So, they use agencies. Some of the people who come from the agencies are good and some of them are not. For these places to be considered forever homes for some people, my dad being one of them, I would never want this to be anybody’s forever home. The workers are transient, so that means that they could care less about the people. But that’s not all of them. It’s a lot with the agencies coming and going. And it’s frightening for an elderly person to see somebody new every day draw their blood. So, the level of consistency is weak. You have a few people that work hard and they carry everybody. I would say 30% of the staff in terms of nursing care are CNAs, and they care and they are working hard. And the other 70% are just sitting around the nurse’s stations on their cell phones.
It’s got a good living community. The rooms are decent and nice. They do have a variety of food and it’s decent. They try to make different types of foods that people from multiple cultures would not mind eating. So there’s diversity and variety in the cooking. This spans a bunch of different ethnic groups, and they have been mindful of that.
The place is fairly clean. There are no funny smells or anything like that when I come in. They keep a really good schedule with the food. They have designated time for people to eat. The activities director tries to get everybody involved. The reason they’re getting a 3-star rating is that they have some exceptional people working there and then a few, and then everybody else. If you tell them about something that you don’t like or that you’re seeing, they are responsive. They’ll work with you. It’s just that it doesn’t stick.

The bathroom had mold growing in the sink from a leaky facet the toilet looked like it had not been cleaned in weeks. My Dad’s bag was still packed. I dont think he had taken a shower or brushed his teeth in the 2 months he was there. or ever changed his clothes. He said he felt so uncomfortable he didnt even want to answer his phone. What a nightmare. The state needs to come in and check this terrible place out!

My mom was at Elevate Care Chicago North Rehab. It’s a nursing home/rehab center. She was there for rehab and wound care. It looked kind of outdated, but at least the first floor was clean. The room where my mom stayed was decent. It was very outdated, and the bathroom was outdated. My experience with them wasn’t the greatest. I found my mom many times soiled in urine and feces. She went into that facility for wound care, and many times I found her wrappings dirty with feces and they were stained with urine like they haven’t changed my mom in a long time, so it wasn’t the greatest experience. Also, she contracted COVID from there, which means they weren’t too careful with her. Overall, it wasn’t a good experience. When she got COVID, she got isolated to the fourth floor, and that room was horrible. It almost looked like an abandoned building, and it was unacceptable. It was dirty, and it was pretty bad. Since I found my mom so many times dirty, I had them take her to the hospital so she could get tested for infections and stuff since she had open wounds, and then after that, I had her transferred to another facility because I couldn’t take her back to Elevate. I refused to take her back to Elevate.
I went there from like 10:00 or 11:00 in the morning to like 4:00 or 5:00 in the afternoon, and unless I found somebody down to help me change my mom’s diaper, nobody went to do activities with her. She was bedridden anyway, I don’t think she would have participated, but I didn’t see any staff trying to do anything with her. My mom was on pureed food. The CNAs just put the tray there and walked away most of the time. I don’t have many good things to say about that facility. They don’t deserve any star.
They were understaffed, and they shouldn’t be taking any patients if they’re understaffed. They could get more staffing and better staffing like people that want to do their job. I got a CNA who got mad at me because I called her in to change my mom’s diaper that only had urine in it, and it wasn’t pooped, so she got mad at me because she didn’t want to change her unless it was poop. They should show a little more compassion and have a better staff. The wound care team is exceptional. Whenever they get to do their job, they did it well. So, I can’t say anything bad about them.

I highly recommend Buckingham Pavilion to anyone looking to place a family member in a long term care facility.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Evanston, IL
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
