The 10 Best Assisted Living Facilities in Shrewsbury, NJ for 2023
Shrewsbury is a small borough of just 3,800 people in the northeastern most corner of New Jersey. This quiet community has minimal crime and great air quality, and it’s just 30 miles from the cultural amenities, restaurants and entertainment venues of New York City. With these features, it’s not surprising that it has a large senior community that accounts for almost 18% of its population.
For seniors who need some help with daily living activities and want access to curated social and recreational programming, assisted living may be a good option. In Shrewsbury, this level of care costs approximately $5,991 per month, which is higher than the national median but affordable compared to other cities in New Jersey. Prices vary depending on a facility’s location and amenities. There are 19 facilities in the Shrewsbury region, including one within the city proper and 18 more within 8 miles.

Sunrise of Shrewsbury is a beautiful new facility. It’s big and it’s gorgeous. I wish I was 55, I would move in tomorrow. I loved it. While I was waiting to go in for a tour, I heard a sing-along going on in the background. I was sitting in front of the fireplace there, I turned around, and they were having a sing-along for their happy hour. They have music playing and they were singing together and had their little drinks. Everybody seemed happy. Then I got to smell food, and I went home starving because it smells amazing.
Nicole was amazing, she’s the director. She gave me the tour because the other person had gone home already. While we walked around, she knew everybody’s name. Everyone said hello and smiled at her. You couldn’t have staged it to be that amazing. She was involved with everything, helping people that looked like they might have been struggling with their walk, getting an elevator, holding an elevator for somebody, and picking up things. If she saw a piece of trash on the floor, she’d take it out. She said, even though everybody has a job, no one here is above doing a different person’s job, or below doing somebody else’s job. Everyone’s here to help. Whether the person is working on maintenance, or you’re the director, or in sales, whatever your job is, if somebody needs a hand with something, you’re willing to help. That’s what they’re looking for, for their staff, and that’s why I fell in love with them.
I only got to smell the food, but it smells amazing. We were there when some of the guests were finished eating already, and she asked everybody how they enjoyed their meal, and it was delicious. It’s brand new, immaculate, and clean. It has all the amenities that you would want in a new place. Even when we went on the outside deck, they brought the pillows in to make sure that they didn’t get rained on and whatnot. Since it was just built, they didn’t miss a beat on amenities.

The Chelsea at Shrewsbury was very pretty, and they had a visitor who has four paws. They have therapy dogs come in and visit with the residents. I thought that was wonderful. It was very hotel-like looking.
The staff was friendly enough, I thought the reception was kind of overwhelmed. My mom would probably tell you that she found them to be rude because they were kind of cross and they were busy. I think it might have been in between shift changes or something, but they were too busy to help us. We had to sit and wait for a little bit before we saw the person, we had an appointment with.
Their dining area is pretty. I didn’t even smell food, so we were there during an off-food time. They had a movie room, and it was very nice. They had another activity room, it was big. They were playing bingo at the time, and that was very full, a lot of people were doing the bingo. They had a little library nook on the second floor. Everything was beautiful, it was gorgeous. My mom has moved into Sunrise of Lincroft. She said she loves this place and made a decision before we even left. It has been there for 40 years, and she liked that it was very homey, like very familiar, and smaller. It felt more like home, and it had a warmth about it that she liked. We went and saw a possible room for her and did a little tour. Before we even got to the elevator to go back downstairs, she said, "I love it here." The staff that I have dealt with, I love them. I haven’t had any issues; I think they’re all great.
I know that they have a lot of Catholic things because it’s a large Catholic community, so they have a rosary group every day. They do movies, play bingo, and have certain games. They celebrate whenever they can. I remember, my mom was in the hospital, and she was gone for like a month and a half. When she came back, I asked if they wanted it if I made cupcakes for everybody, so I made like 105 cupcakes, and we brought them in and we did it as an activity for everybody to decorate. If you didn’t want to decorate on your own, you can take one that’s already decorated. We did it so that everybody could have an opportunity to have a cupcake or decorate a cupcake. It was to celebrate my mom returning, and they accommodated that nicely. They’re very festive.
I want to go there and eat every day. Their food is good. If you’re not a resident, you’re not allowed in the dining area, but I had the opportunity the other day because there is an issue with my mom, and she missed lunch. So, I went in with her afterward and they told me because we were the only ones in there except for maybe like three people, they let me sit in with her. She had a butternut squash soup that they made, and they have an egg salad. I got to taste them, and I think the food is delicious. Even the staff says they love to eat the food there. The food is good, smells delicious, and tasted good. They’ll serve wine if you like it, with your lunch and dinner. They let everyone have a glass of wine if they want. I think it’s very lovely. It’s set up like a formal dining room. There are tablecloths and cloth napkins, it’s very nice. They’re given a menu every day; there’s a menu posted, but they’re each given a menu at their table. I love it, and it’s nice. I think all the chairs maybe, or most of them, are rolling chairs. This is much easier for the seniors to get in and out. If you want to stay in your wheelchair, you can stay in your wheelchair. There are a couple of times that I’m not allowed to go in there, and they have a really cute pub area outside the dining room. If I want to come and have a sandwich with my mom but I don’t want to take her off premises and I want to have a meal with her, she can come out to that side. She is still near the dining room, but I’m allowed to sit there with her. There’s a jukebox and they leave out fruit or cookies and little cakes; sometimes whatever they have to leave out for the residents to stop by and pick up. That’s my cupcakes out there one night because there were some extras.
I would give them five across the board on anything. I had an issue; my mom had a problem. I brought it to the director right away. Because she was just leaving to go to lunch, she put it down, grabbed the chair, flew over, and sat next to my mom. She genuinely listened to my mom’s concerns because there was an issue, and everybody’s perspective is different. The staff member’s perspective was reported, and my mom was not. When I finally was able to get my mom to not be upset and talk to me, she told me about it. When I saw the director, she didn’t wait. She put her lunch down, but she didn’t go put it in her office. She came over to us, put it down at the table nearby, pulled up a chair, and talked to my mom right away. I thought it was wonderful. She had lots of respect for my mother. That is actually why I started to view the sunrise. I did some research online after going into some places and not being too thrilled. I got used to the sales pitch that’s kind of all it was when I went to places. I looked into the company, and I liked the company’s motto and vision. They care about the elderly, and they expect that their staff always treats their residents with absolute respect and dignity. So, when my mom had an issue that one of the aides wouldn’t leave the room while my mom was using the bathroom, my mom was very upset. It became an issue, and my mom is reported for being nasty, but the part about the woman not leaving the bathroom and my mom liking the privacy was not reported. So, when we discussed it, the director was like, "Oh, no, I don’t blame you at all. I would expect her to leave, too." she validated my mom’s concern instead of making my mom feel unheard. That was important, and they do want you to feel like you’re comfortable enough to come up and speak to them. I feel it’s run like a family more than it’s run like a business, and I think that’s why my mom loves it. In terms of value for money, it’s pretty much what you expect. It’s better priced than most places too, because I’ve gone to other places that were the same price and not as nice, or more expensive and just about the same

My sister, Liz, has dementia and bipolar disorder. She was only accepted in one place — she is not in good shape — and that is Millennium Memory Care. Sometimes, we get to the facility and the front gate is not locked, which does not give me very good vibes. The staff seems to be quite caring, sometimes. My sister is the highest functioning person there, but she is also very agitated and aggressive at times. Sometimes the staff is pretty annoyed with her. They have activities, and Liz said the food is good. It’s a locked facility with only 16 people there, and most of them are just lying around doing nothing and looking awful. The care is good. There’s a new group that is running the place. It’s very pretty, and the grounds are lovely.

I visited The Chelsea at Tinton Falls. The receptionist, the director, and the person that did my tour were all wonderful. I liked that at the end they had warm sconce waiting for me to go. The facility reminded me of a bed and breakfast type of facility. They had a private dining room, it’s very nice. It’s a private dining room for a resident to use with their family. The main dining room, I would rate a three. It looks okay but wasn’t glamorous. I knew it was an older facility, so it was clean, warmly decorated, and welcoming.
I didn’t get to try the food, but it looked good. They had barbecue ribs that night, and they smelled delicious. They had samples of each dish that was being served that night. So, you could see a visual of the meal for the day, like the chef’s selections. As the residents walked in, they could see what was offered. I thought that was nice.
I was at a point where I was trying to find a place that would take my mom. I loved the people that I met, and I was caught up in the people and I liked the people. My brother came in and he looked at the building. He saw the cracks in the wall, the need for repainting, and things like the worn-out carpet. I didn’t notice any of it because I was focused on the different aspects. So, if we are looking at the building part, I think it’s average, especially because it’s older.
They can improve with maybe small updates and repairs, there were things that need to be updated and repaired.

Staff is miserable, many complained about the working conditions and their empathy toward the patients showed it. They just woke me up at 4:45am to take out the trash…..Little respect for the patients.
No activities what so ever. You can’t even get a cup of coffee in the morning. The food is beyond horrible, i probably ate 1 maybe 2 meals the 2 weeks i was there.
Please don’t subject yourself to this god awful place, run.

The county’s Division on Aging, Disabilities and Veterans Services helps veterans obtain benefits and services they’re entitled to. Its advisors can help veterans gather the necessary documentation and apply for the Aid and Attendance benefit, pension programs and service-related and non-service-related disability compensation, which can be used toward assisted living expenses.
South Jersey Legal Services is a regional nonprofit organization that offers free legal assistance, advice and representation for those aged 60 and over in Shrewsbury. It can help older adults determine eligibility and apply for public benefits that may help cover assisted living expenses, including Supplemental Security Income, Medicaid and Medicare Advantage plans. The office can also help seniors understand assisted living facility contracts and resolve issues related to the quality of care they receive.
The statewide long-term care ombudsman helps seniors and families identify options for covering assisted living services, understand residents’ rights and receive the services and supports in their care plans.
