I was interested in assisted living when I toured Bedford Court. The staff was so pleasant, professional, personable, and very knowledgeable. He explained everything. He answered my questions to my satisfaction. As far as the facility itself, it offers everything. I didn’t want to go to an assisted living, and then I would have to be moved someplace else from memory care or someplace else for nursing or someplace else for a hospice. It offered everything and that’s what I was looking for.
As far as activities are concerned, there is something for every day, and they even did extra things. They have a bus that will take you shopping or to different places. They have a lot of activities within the community, which I like. They have a physical therapy room, an exercise room, and a library. Everything was so nice and clean. No odors. The staff was friendly. I just really liked the place. I was excited when I left there.
I had a chance to try their meals. I took some of my friends back because they are also kind of looking, too, and the staff treated us to lunch, and it was very nice. The waiter was nice. The food was delicious.

I went to Sunrise of Silver Spring and I met Lamar and the manager. It was a lovely facility and the people seemed happy. I was there while they had an activity going on and they had lots of participants, so I found that impressive. The only thing that was a challenge for me is the cost. It exceeded what is available to cover my mom’s services.
I saw a single and a shared space, and I thought they were both impressive. I saw the residents having lunch while I was there, as well as having finished a religious service. I was pleased to see those activities going on.
The dining area was an open space and it looked as if people could choose where they sat, as opposed to being assigned spaces. There were groups of people, and tables with a few people, and I saw one table where there was one individual, but everybody looked content.
The person at the front desk was very pleasant. I walked in and they had a welcome sign. They said they were expecting me, so they were welcoming me. I met the director. They were very pleasant and informative. I was impressed. However, it wasn’t something that I could consider because it was well above affordability.

They had a really nice menu option that was posted for the day. They had really nice things to say about the chef for that location. The dining rooms were very spacious. They were much larger given the floor space available.

Regardless to the time of my visits, he was always clean, well fed, actively involved with some type of physical or mental activity or actively involved with staff members viewing one of his favorite musical or game shows on television. In addition, the extra time you took to celebrate his birthday, take him to visit his family or friends or to welcome their visits to see him were greatly appreciated. I visited other assisted living facilities before placing him with you and I never regretted that decision for he could not have received better care given in such a loving and professional way. Thank you again for personalizing his care to his interests and needs.

AlfredHouse has nine facilities, but my mom is going to be in a home with eight people as opposed to a big facility. This one is very nice, and just very perfect for her needs. Some people may need larger facilities with big TVs, big dining rooms, and things like that, but my mom has Alzheimer’s, so I wasn’t interested in paying all that money for the extra bells and whistles that she can’t use. It’s five minutes from my home, so that makes a big difference, because I visit a lot. The facility is small, it’s not a big one, so the ratios are much better. It’s like one person to four, and they only have eight people in the house. They have large homes, but I like that one because it is smaller, it’s good one-on-one care. It’s beautiful, it’s a home that has a huge sunroom, it has a TV room, individual bedrooms, both single and double, and it’s in a neighborhood. It’s a cul-de-sac, and it’s in the neighborhood, so you can go out walking and feel safe. It’s a beautiful home. The staff is very friendly, and very caring to the patients that were there. Basically, it’s a family-owned business, so a lot of the people who worked there were related to the owner, the original owner. I know that people come in and do exercise, music therapy, and memory therapy.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Silver Spring
The Office of Health Care Quality, a division of the Maryland Department of Health, is ultimately responsible for ensuring the state’s assisted living facilities conform to standards. It can issue licenses and revoke them from facilities that violate agreed standards. Some work is also undertaken at a local level by the Long-Term Care Ombudsman.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Silver Spring
According to Sperling’s Best Places, Silver Spring has a cost of living of 132.4, compared to the U.S. average of 100. The figure appears to be primarily driven by housing and transportation costs, although groceries and utilities are also above the national averages. However, health care costs are significantly lower, at 92.6, which may be the most important category for seniors considering assisted living care.
Holycross Hospital and Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center are the primary medical facilities in Silver Spring. The area also has a high number of Medicare registered physicians. Additionally, due to its location, seniors have easy access to nationally ranked hospitals, such as Inova Fairfax Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Statistics published by Neighborhood Scout reveal Silver Spring as a safer location than average for Maryland and the country. The chances of becoming a victim of violent crime in Maryland is 1 in 220, while it’s 1 in 443 in Silver Spring. Although not as favorable, the figures for property crime are also positive. In Maryland, the chances of being a victim are 1 in 51, while in Silver Spring, it’s 1 in 58. Crime statistics often make people feel uncomfortable, so it’s worth remembering that seniors are much less likely to be victims of crime than any other age group.
Seniors in Montgomery County have several options to offset the normally costly transportation services in the area. Connect-a-Ride (CAR) will find low-cost curb-to-curb ride services for free. The payments asked of seniors are on a sliding scale, dependent on several factors, including annual income. The Senior SmarTrip Card allows Montgomery County’s citizens aged 65+ to use Ride On and Metrobus outside of peak commuting times for half the normal fare.
Homeowners aged 65+ can apply for the Senior Tax Credit. Calculated as 50 percent of the State Homeowners Tax Credit and the Montgomery County Supplement, it can help reduce tax bills for qualifying seniors.
Paying for Assisted Living in Silver Spring
The 2020 Genworth Cost of Care Survey reveals that families in Silver Spring can expect to pay in the region of $6,000 per month for their loved ones. It also shows the costs of other types of care for seniors who may find another route more suitable for their circumstances.
The Cost of Living in Nearby Cities
At $6,000, Silver Spring’s assisted living costs are almost the most expensive in Maryland. Only the city of California, where monthly fees average at $6,200, is more costly. Seniors in Salisbury get assisted living for approximately $500 less per month when compared to Silver Spring, while the reduction in Baltimore is $1,000. The least expensive city in the state is Hagerstown, where fees average at $4,500.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Silver Spring
While many families use their own funds or personal assets to pay for assisted living, there are plenty of additional options to cover these costs. Some additional ways to finance assisted living costs include:
Veterans Benefits
Life Insurance Policy
Long-Term Care Insurance
Reverse Mortgage
For more information about different ways to finance assisted living, visit our Assisted Living in Maryland page.
Free Assisted Living Resources in Silver Spring
The list below includes resources that can help with assisted living costs, support seniors who have concerns about their assisted living facility and introduce new residents to others in their age group in Silver Spring.
The VA Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly payment awarded to qualifying veterans to help cover some of their residential care costs. The benefit is also available to spouses, and there’s no requirement to pay it back. To determine if they qualify, vets can use the free tool provided on the VeteranAid.org website. Maximum monthly payments are $1,881 for a single vet, $1,209 for a surviving spouse and $2,230 for a couple. A condition of eligibility is that the senior must already be in a facility.
Seniors residing in assisted living facilities throughout Maryland can register concerns about the quality of their care with the Long-Term Care Ombudsman. The ombudsman will investigate and seek to resolve issues with the owners of the facilities. If complaints are of a criminal nature, such as allegations of abuse, they will be passed on to the relevant authorities. The ombudsman also holds inspection reports for assisted living facilities, which are available to families on request.
