Located in western Pennsylvania, Butler is a small but dynamic city known for its historic locations and thriving art and culture scene. Health care in the city costs about 11.9% less than the U.S. average, and many premier hospitals and specialist clinics serve the area, including the AHN Cancer Institute. With nursing home costs just below the state average at $9,733 monthly, Butler can be an affordable place for seniors with chronic conditions to seek quality care.
Nursing homes employ medical professionals, such as licensed nurses, rehabilitative therapists and dietitians, to provide close health monitoring. These facilities can help seniors recover from acute conditions, such as strokes and joint replacements. Caregivers may also utilize medical treatments, including IV therapy, dialysis and pain management, to support seniors with severe or long-term illnesses. Seniors who don’t need 24-hour skilled nursing may prefer home health care or assisted living as nursing homes are for frail individuals.
This guide compares the cost of various types of care in Butler and provides free resources that families may find useful. It also outlines some financial assistance options.

Sunnyview was very bright, cheerful, and clean. The staff was very caring and the care that my dad got was very good. I was very satisfied with it. From what I saw, the food was also good, and they provide three meals a day. My dad was in rehab at first which went really well. They would get him up and take him to watch TV when he was able, but he wasn’t really able to do a lot of activities. I thought that the quality was excellent. They would call me several times a week when I wasn’t able to be there to update me on his status.

Woefully understaffed. New hires quit same day they start. Nurse calls ignored. Phone system to reach staff is awful. Food service is atrocious, even state inspectors cited this place: hot dogs, baked beans and tater tots served frequently for dinner. Or grilled cheese sandwiches, not even fully grilled. Not serving physician-ordered protein beverage supplements. Water the only beverage served with meal at least once.
Rooms are dark and dim. More like a homeless shelter. Not a place for comfort and recovery. 4 patients to one bathroom.
Private-pay cost is outrageous for conditions and care.
All the ‘glowing’ reviews are old: pre-2022.

Though everyone has been kind to my mother, their chronic issues with being understaffed makes them unable to deliver the level of care they advertise. There are two sides for almost thirty patients, meaning that call bells for bedpans take almost thirty minutes to be answered. For patients who are struggling with continence and bowel issues, this means they are left lying in their own waste multiple times a day. At this point, I expect my mother to have infection issues which will force her back into the hospital.
She has been there a week and has yet to get a shower. The aides are too busy to bathe her. She calls in tears daily.
Concordia, your aides are undoubtedly underpaid which results in your facility being understaffed. Do better.

My mother and father were both residents of Sugar Creek Rest for a while. They were both in skilled nursing there. Our overall experience was not the best. The staff was good and the nursing care was OK, but the food was horrible, which is the reason my mother was taken out of there after five days. The buildings were beautiful. The grounds were very nice. It’s like a farm-type setting. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of secondary roads that you have to take to get to the place. It’s probably about 10 miles off of the main road. It’s very clean and very well kept up. My only complaints about the place were the heating wasn’t that great in the patients’ rooms and the food was terrible. They had a church there, a beauty salon, had activities director there, bingo, and stuff for them.

The care that The Arbors At St Barnabas is providing to my in-laws has been very good. They were in a two-bedroom apartment in assisted living, which was really wonderful for them when they were more mobile. It was newly renovated, the food was good and whatnot, but they had to move to another building when their mobility became an issue. They’re now in a double room but it’s just one room. It’s been very good for them. The people really help them get adjusted. At the place where they are now they’ve gone to some music activities where they bring people in to play musical entertainment. They have some other gatherings and they play games with the residents who can play games. They also have a very good activities coordinator who has activities three times a week, and they again play games to help with their skills. They do sing-alongs and there are activities where they make decorations for the parties they’re having. For people who are able to leave, they have buses to take them, or they take them for ice cream or to symphonic type things. The activities are a little less intense now that they’re at a higher level of care than when they were in assisted living. The staff has been absolutely wonderful, and since they have skilled nursing, they almost always have a nurse on staff member around the clock. So if you need anything special or anything to get checked there’s a nurse to help. The aides are wonderful, they’re just attentive, kind, and very good. The meals looked very good. We went there to have Thanksgiving with them, it was a special meal, and it was wonderful; it’s restaurant quality. Both of my in-laws are satisfied with their regular meals. The activity spaces are very nice, they’re all clean, and almost all redone.

Quality Life Services had physical therapy and a lot of things that worked for me and enabled me to do things more on my own than I was before. They’re very expensive, but they had good, quality work. We were crowded. They were putting more people in rooms that were made for two people. The people who worked for them were very good, but overworked and probably underpaid.
The food was OK. Certain meals were good quality and certain meals were underrated and not that great. There were things that should’ve been done, but they could not do that because they didn’t either have the time or the capabilities to do them. It was not a question of how bad they might have been, but rather how good they were with what they had.
They made the rooms as attractive as they could. They had movies in a big open area until the coronavirus messed things up, and they had to narrow down the number of people in one space. It’s a pretty facility, and they were adding on. They had construction of another wing going on, on the other side of the courtyard. They tried to make a variety of food preparations and sometimes they succeeded and sometimes they didn’t. They offered physical therapy there, and they had a lady come in that would do your hair.

This place is awful. It’s dirty , staff are unfriendly and nurses have too many patients. One nurse was incredibly nasty, ignored me when I asked a question and told me she had too many patients. I saw one staff get rough with a patient who tried to take her food cart. She was clearly agitated with the patient and showed her frustration by being rough with him by pulling his hands off the cart and being nasty to him until she saw me look at her. The few pictures on line look nothing like the facility. There are broken wheelchairs, patients on the locked unit have no place to visit family, and rooms are dingy and uncared for. There is nothing here that is cheerful or engaging and I feel bad for the residents that have no visitors. It felt like what you see in a movie that has an asylum- not something warm or homelike. There was a weekend schedule posted and when I asked where the move was being held Thad was on the weekend schedule all I got was a smirk. There was no movie .- patients have nothing to do on the weekends. Awful …. There is no excuse for this. Some paint , new furnishings , better oversight need to occur. Staff need to be taught how to engage with families and what it means to treat patients with respect.

Cheswick Rehabilitation and Wellness Center, LLC is OK, but I don’t see a lot going on there for the residents. I would hate to think of myself as having to live there. It’s just not acceptable to me as far as the atmosphere. My sister is in skilled nursing there. She had a stroke and she’s wheelchair-bound. Her whole dominant side is paralyzed. The facility looks fine. The staff is really good. They take good care of her physically, but as far as anything to do, it’s boring and depressing. Every time I go to visit, she takes one bite of her meal and leaves the rest, and makes faces like it’s not too good.
It is very clean. They only have one elevator though, which bothers me because she’s on the third floor and she’s in a wheelchair. If there was a fire, how are they going to get everybody from the third floor and the second floor out with one elevator? That concerned me. With one elevator in the whole place and if it’s out of service, they’re stuck. I didn’t like that at all. If you can do the steps, that’s fine, but if you’re in a wheelchair or have mobility problems, you’re gonna die. The rest of it is fine. They have one big dayroom as soon as you go in with TVs and all. They also have a TV in their room. They had a few activities. I’ve been there once on the holidays when they had Christmas carols and a guy playing the guitar and playing Christmas carols, but I don’t think there’s much to do.

Nursing Home Costs in Butler, PA
A semiprivate room in a nursing home costs $9,733 monthly in Butler, and a private room costs $10,798.
The Cost of Nursing Home Care in Nearby Cities
At an average monthly cost of $9,733, nursing home care is slightly less expensive in Butler compared to the Pennsylvania average of $10,403. However, the national average is $7,908, so prices across the entire state are somewhat costly overall. Bloomsburg is one of the state’s most affordable locations at $8,943, and Johnstown is also less inexpensive at $9,171. Cities in eastern Pennsylvania tend to be more costly with averages of $12,631 in Reading and $11,437 in Philadelphia.
The Cost of Other Types of Senior Care
Alternative types of care can provide adequate support while being less expensive. Assisted living can save seniors over $6,000, whereas in-home care and home health care average $5,339 monthly, much cheaper than the $9,733 cost of nursing homes. Because home health care includes medical services, it might be a good alternative for frail seniors. Adult day health care costs $1,495, making it the most affordable option for seniors without significant disabilities or severe illnesses.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Butler, PA
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
