Whittier is a residential city between Los Angeles and Orange County that’s home to mom-and-pop boutiques stores, numerous beautiful parks and shops specializing in quality groceries and goods. Just over 15% of its 87,300 residents are seniors, the group most in need of the city’s many medical facilities. These include Whittier Hospital and Whittier Hospital Medical Center and an abundance of nursing homes. According to the 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, Whittier’s median monthly fee for a nursing home semiprivate room is $9,125, which is below California’s average.
Nursing homes are facilities where skilled nurses provide round-the-clock medical care for seniors with ongoing conditions that require permanent support and those rehabilitating from surgical procedures. As they deliver complex medical treatments, as well as daily living assistance, accommodation and meals, nursing home fees tend to be higher than for other types of care. Seniors with basic medical care and daily living support needs are better served by assisted living facilities and home health care agencies.
This guide includes information about nursing home costs in Whittier and Southern California. It also compares costs for other types of senior care and lists some free resources for older residents.

It was a lot of that type of thing.

Additionally, the therapy team did a fantastic job of rehabilitating my grandpa post surgery. On a side note, My grandma attended the activities regularly so it must have been fun for her. Judging by the calendar of events, they have a lot of things for your loved ones to do. I would highly recommend this facility.

My mom had therapy in Whittier Pacific Care Center (Shea Rehabilitation Healthcare). Their therapy group was amazing. We had a private room, and it was great. But other than the therapy, their service was bad. The employees there were overloaded, they have a lot of patients to change every hour, so they’re always rushing. Their food though was very good. They don’t have many activities for the residents. They just watch TV or watch a movie, and most of the people just hang out in their chairs and that’s basically it. If it wasn’t for their therapy group I would rate them a low score.

Alderwood is honestly a great assisted living facility. I’ve only met one staff member who did not seem to love their job, and even they still did more than what was asked of them. All of them have made an effort to get to know my family, and greet us by name whenever we visit. The amenities are also very good, but I cannot give more information since my grandmother seldom utilizes them due to her inability to walk and lack of desire to socialize. The residents are also very kind, they smile at me every time I go. The best thing about Alderwood is that the staff seems to really care. Everyone there is happy, and I rest well knowing that my very fragile grandmother is in caring hands. It is located in a good, quiet area. San Gabriel is a great city, and is also very close to my city so visiting is very easy. I cannot stress enough how great this assisted living facility is. With all of the stories of abuse and etc, it is very hard to choose a home, especially when my grandma has been known to lie incessantly. We wanted to know that we were putting her in trustworthy hands, and her social worker, constantly makes sure of that. She has told me that he visits her constantly and my family is also close to her social worker. Although assisted living places aren’t really the greatest places in the world, I think Alderwood is the lesser evil by far compared to other homes.

My mother was a resident of Anaheim Crest Nursing Center, it was an excellent place, and I liked them a lot. The staff was real nice and friendly, and they have a lot of activities for the residents. Among the many care facilities that my mom went to, this one I would highly recommend. The staff is excellent, and all of them were very nice to my mom. My mom had issues with the food, only because they had meals like the Korean kind. But if you tell them you dont like chili or if youre on a specific diet or anything like that, they are very accommodating in making sure that they dont put something you wont like or that upsets the stomach. The place is very clean, and they have lots of employees and plenty of help. Theyre not understaffed at all. If I could give them a ten on the activities I would. They have an outstanding activities director, thats why my mom likes them so much. They have something for the residents every single day, they have kids who come in to do performances for them, like a candlelight dinner on certain nights where they get served sparkling cider. They also have bingo going on and they get to buy stuff at the store, they have music going on, and its one of the best places when it comes to activities. They also have people who come and do my moms hair and nails, they have a hearing doctor come in for her, a dentist comes in, and a podiatrist comes in and sees my mom. The therapists are very good there. Everybody is very friendly and hands on with the residents.

The Cost of Nursing Home Care in Nearby Cities
Whittier’s median fee of $9,125 per month for a semiprivate room in a nursing home is very competitive compared to the $9,794 average for California. It’s not as low as the national average of $7,908, but costs in California tend to be higher than in most states. However, Whittier’s median fee is below those of the nearest surveyed cities, except for Riverside, where $7,992 is the norm. Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Whittier, CA
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
Free Resources for Seniors in Whittier, CA
Seniors in Whittier residing at home or within senior care facilities can access numerous free resources. Those listed here can support those in dispute with their care provider or in need of help from a legal professional. They can also assist with transportation, preparing taxes and receiving healthy meals at home if they have no other way of getting good food daily.
The Long-Term Care Ombudsman is a state-sponsored advocate for the rights of seniors reading in Whittier's nursing homes. The ombudsman's services are entirely free and include visiting residents to discuss their care and help them understand their rights. Additionally, the ombudsman investigates complaints made by residents, their families and third parties and attempts to negotiate resolutions with care providers on their behalf.
Whittier Meals on Wheels is a nonprofit that provides homebound seniors with healthy and nutritious meals. Its volunteer drivers deliver two meals daily, from Monday to Friday, at $6.50 per delivery. As the program utilizes the kitchens of the Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, its meals are restricted to what the facility produces on any given day. Consequently, Whittier Meals on Wheels can't cater to special diets. There is also a one-time application fee of $65.
The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles is a nonprofit law firm providing free legal assistance to low-income residents. Although it only deals with civil law cases, this covers a wide range of subjects, including government benefits, housing, health care and matters specific to veterans. In addition to one-on-one assistance, seniors and their families can also use the organization's walk-in self-help centers. The closest to Whittier is on Whittier Boulevard, about 20 minutes from the city.
The City of Whitter's Senior Services Division operates two centers for adults aged 55+. The membership fee is $3 per year, which covers a range of social and fitness activities, some of which may be useful to those recovering at home after a nursing home stay. Both facilities are hubs for numerous senior services, such as advice and assistance with tax preparation and limited transportation services suitable for seniors with mobility issues.
