Known as a regional cultural and entertainment hub for upstate South Carolina, Greenville is home to 523,542 people. Its senior population is close to the national average, at 16.1%. The city’s aging population has access to an array of high-quality health care options, including the Bon Secours St. Francis Health System, which is rated the second-best in the state and as high-performing in eight specialties.
In Greenville, a semiprivate room in a nursing home costs an average of $7,730, according to Genworth’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey. This price is close to the national average but higher than the state median. Because nursing homes generally offer high levels of care, including 24/7 supervision and medication management, they are usually the most expensive care option. Seniors may be able to find comparable care from other services, such as assisted living or home health care.
The following guide will provide information on nursing homes and their alternatives in Greenville. It also lists free senior-focused resources.

Through my in-laws and my mother I have been able to experience life in the independent home, the apartments, healthcare, and rehabilitation unit. My family members were able to enjoy the last portion of their lives in a caring community that provided great food, many activities, and a clean, attractive and well cared for facility. The staff "adopted " my crew and became part of our lives. They kept me informed and respected my suggestions and decisions. The activities staff was incredible and made birthdays and holidays special. Other days were filled with craft activities, visiting performers, and bus trips to favorite restaurants. During Covid , drive by and window (closed) visits were arranged and pictures of family members were shared. My in-laws and Mother have all died. I miss them terribly but also miss the Rolling Green staff who made their lives richer!

My mother is at the Heartland Health Care Center Greenville East (Formerly Oakmont East Nursing Center) right now. She’s not been moving, and she’s not functioning but so far, everything has been okay. The place looks amazing and clean, and everybody’s been friendly. They call me a lot and let me know what’s going on. She’s on the rehab side, which is the East. They have meals. We haven’t been able to go in mainly because of Covid, but we looked through the window. I see her with food, but I don’t know what it tastes like and I’ve never had it. We’re not able to go inside, but from what I see through the window, everything looks okay. The bedding looks good. She seems comfortable, and she’s clean. I don’t see any dirt on her or anything. She’s not doing anything, and I don’t see anybody out there really doing as much because of Covid. Pretty much, the place is on lockdown.

My mother is in Southpointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation (formerly Magnolia Place of Greenville). We’re not fans. There are some good things about it, but she frequently has to wait a long time when she presses her button for help to go to the bathroom, and some of the CNAs who work there leave a little bit to be desired. The room is older, and she talks about how all the stuff in her room is basically the same as what it was when her mother was in the hospital in the 1960s. It’s clean, but it’s just older things. The food seems fine; she likes the food just fine. The therapy is in another area that we’re not really happy with, and some of it could be her insurance. Sometimes they’ll come and say they’re coming back, and they’ll not actually show up. When they do come, they frequently are only with her for maybe twenty minutes. They’ve also overlapped her physical therapy and occupational therapy, so they’re there at the same time, and she’s literally sometimes getting a total of twenty minutes’ therapy each day.

My mother is at ProMedica Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation (Greenville West) (formerly Heartland). It’s not too good so far. She’s been there for a couple of weeks and the day she went in, she was diagnosed with COVID, so she hasn’t even been out of her room until yesterday. They had her quarantined, which I can understand. She has had no therapy until now. The staff has been nice. I like her nurse. She has a really good nurse. Her room is nice. She said the food is the best thing about the place. We haven’t seen anything in the place except for her room. I know they have activities, but she hasn’t been able to participate in any of them yet. I know there’s a calendar in her room that tells what activity is going to be going for the day and they have the calendar in her room for the month to show what days they do certain things. They were pleasant. They accepted her willingly and she didn’t have a problem with any of them and we didn’t either. They were very nice. They came straight to her when she got there and took her to her room. It’s very expensive.

I would not wish this place on my worst enemy. They played a large part in my father’s death. I don’t think they realized that his cognitive skills were as good as ever; therefore he was able to tell us what was happening when we finally were able to talk to him. By the time we figured out what they were doing to him and took him out, he was so weak that he wasn’t able to recover. He died a few weeks later. I’m just so grateful that he was able to spend those last few weeks at home with his family.

My husband was doing physical therapy at NHC HealthCare-Greenville. They kept him busy. He did bingo, painting, and many other things. They had bands come in and play. It was great. They were short a lot of time with nurses, especially during COVID, so sometimes it would take a while for them to come change my husband, but we understood that. Whoever cooks there should go teach the other people how to cook. It was top-notch. They would give you choices you wanted and you picked it out. You could get whatever you wanted and then they had another menu if you wanted something else on that day. You could opt out and get something like a hamburger or grilled cheese or soup or whatever. He ate every single piece of it and he never left anything.
The staff was awesome. Some of them would come to visit my husband even though it wasn’t their job. The maintenance man came in to visit him. Then some of the nurses would drop by just to say hi. They had three courtyards that’s right in the middle and you can go out there and they have all these flowers planted and a place where you can ride with the wheelchair and stuff. It was just beautiful. Every day I tried to get him into his wheelchair and we’d go and ride, which I think helped.
The way the facility was laid out was great. The activities were the best part. They have them just about every single day. They’ll have somebody come in to or play the piano. It was always something to get their minds off of their illness. The building was clean. They had everything organized. The physical therapy people were really good. They worked hard and tried their best.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Greenville, South Carolina
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
