"The Renaissance was older and had large apartments and independent homes. The problem was it's very isolated in a small town where the only thing is a subway shop and a Family Dollar, so if you want gasoline or grocery store, you have to go 15 or 20 miles. The rooms were big and modern and had new appliances. Some of the homes even had enclosed backyards, so if you have a pet, there's a place where you could let your dog out. "

"If I could afford it, I would send my mother to the Springs at Simpsonville. The place is very nice; it's very up-to-date, very modern, and elaborate. I think it's fairly new and well-kept. At that time, we had to make an immediate decision and the price just wouldn't fit our budget to be able to take her ther. It's not that they couldn't take care of her, but we just couldn't afford their rent yet. The people there are very nice. It's really nice, but like I said, it's just above what we could afford to pay for during this time. "

"We have my mother on the waiting list for the Legacy Reserve at Fairview Park. The staff members are very helpful and very friendly. They are a caring community. The rooms are very spacious and clean. They look very nice. The dining room is beautiful. It is set up very nicely. I would tell others that they're very helpful. If they have any questions, they will answer them for them, and if they don't know the answer, they will find it for you."

"We visited Rolling Green Village. We were impressed. The staff was superb, and their dining area, the facility, and everything looked nice, but it didn't fit the niche we had. They are top-notch. They have several libraries, exercise facilities, and a pool. It's very nice. The layout is quite large. There's nothing you could want that it's not there. They have a whole program, so it's very good, but we decided we wanted more independent living."

"I toured Merrill Gardens at Greenville. What I liked most first of all is the affordability of it. I didn't think I could find anything downtown Greenville that was affordable. That was the only place as far as the senior living community that was affordable and very nice. It was just a great location. This is pretty new. They have a restaurant there so I went and had lunch with the marketing guy and I was really surprised at how great the food was. It's really healthy and fresh food. They have a lot of nice amenities there. They even had a rooftop area where you could go and cook out and look out over downtown Greenville, which was fantastic. They had a nice pool area, I think it was heated. It was fairly small. I think there were like 140-160 units, something like that. So I didn't consider it that big. The only thing that I did not particularly care for was it was like a high-rise kind of setup like a hotel. The one thing that bothered me and I even mentioned it to the marketing guy, I liked him a lot, but as we were walking down the hallway, he pointed out a resident and said this, so-and-so told me her name and said, she's our oldest resident here and told me her age, and I'm like he's kind of divulging information. That bothered me a little bit that he knew personal information about residents and then was telling me about it. I'm a little concerned about people knowing my privacy, so that was one issue I had that I did bring up with them. They had a move-in special that was very reasonable. I think it was first rent-free. I think everything was included, all the utilities and the three meals a day, plus the snack and internet stuff. They had a good promotion going on. I think they reduced it by $400 a month for the next year and this was a big deal to me. There's no lease, so you could do it month to month. You do sign a contract, but if you want to leave next month, I think you'd have to get a 30-day notice. Then you could go ahead and leave, but the contract essentially said we're not going to raise the rate on you for a year. So I liked that about it. He said, if you live here a year, a month or so and don't like it, you can leave. So that was different, I thought. It's very modern as far as the style of everything, the colors were just really great. I didn't feel like I was in some old folks home."

"Bayberry Retirement Inn was a nice place. It had big rooms. It was clean and neat. It did not have an odor. "

"I toured Foothills Retirement Community. They're a very nice place, at the top of the line, with many activities. It's more like a hotel. They're very nice. I only dealt with one person. He was very nice, very helpful, and toured the whole area. He just answered all my questions. They have apartments and they have one-bedroom facilities. They have a lot, depending on how much you want to pay, and what your needs are. If you need more care, they probably have you in a one bedroom with a bath included. They have everything like game rooms and an outside courtyard area with a fireplace. It's very nice."

"Ashlan Village was a small Christian community which was a benefit for us. We found the price of the housing to be very reasonable. We wanted them to build us a new home and they were very accommodating. The staff seemed to be warm and welcoming. It was an older building and the dining area was very basic. When you're in one of their independent living homes, you get one meal per day. There was a nice little pond at the back. I think we'll fit in quite well in that place. We were very impressed with the quality of the homes that were built there."

"I liked The Woodlands at Furman very much, but it's a little expensive. They provide one meal a day and a nice room with a screened porch. They had activities, and it's next to Furman campus. The staff was very nice."

"I have my mom here, which is just two minutes from my home. They are very accommodating and they have very caring staff. Their activities were wonderful. I like that they have some kind of activity every day to stimulate them like somebody comes and sings or paint their nails or they play bingo. Their activities director is wonderful. She encourages them and my mom looks forward to what's on the calendar. I know that takes a lot of planning and I think it is very appropriate. I eat several meals there and I think the food is very good. Their food service person is wonderful. They even give them snacks in the evening. However, I hope they change the way they give their medicine because my mom is really not happy about that. She has to leave her room and go to the medicine room, which I know is another activity for her, but that will be something I will change if I can because she wants it when they come to her room to give her medicine. Other than that, my mom is very happy there and I can't be happier. "

"My dad will be moving into Lakewood Independent Living. The facility was very nice, and the staff was nice. The amenities were good for what's included. Breakfast and dinner were included. The activities that were on-site were included in the monthly fee. They would do weekly housekeeping in the apartment. They would get a storage locker on their floor for any items that they wanted to store that were locked. There was a laundry and dryer unit in each apartment. They had a concierge that would help in the event they needed anything. The staff was very friendly, and helpful, and answered questions. She was very thorough on her tour, and very accommodating to us."
