Independent Living Communities in Columbus, NC

"My brother is in Maple Brook Terrace. Basically, their level of care is independent living, that's it. They are very good at coordinating additional housekeeping and medical care, but they don't provide it, they just facilitate it. It's just over one year old. The design for both airiness, lightness, and functionality are excellent. The staff is marvelous. They're caring about the individuals, thorough, thoughtful, cheerful, and very helpful. We've tried the food for five days and it's excellent. They do exercises in chair activities, Wii bowling, conversations, and gatherings in the social area. They have a pool room, a fully-staffed theater with a huge screen TV, and theater-style seating, and they have a fully equipped exercise and physical therapy room. They have a social directory encouraging people to get involved in activities. The scheduled list of activities is excellent. We looked at 15 different facilities and it was the best."

"I toured Harmony at Five Forks. The facility appeared clean and well cared for, well-kept. The director that met with us took the time to speak with us, took the time to walk us through the facility, showed us what was available, and showed us what options were available. The dining area was acceptable. They seem to be doing some activities with the residents. They seem to want to engage the residents and keep them involved as opposed to having them in their rooms."

"Tryon Estates had a beautiful setting out in the country, it was very attractive, and the people were very nice. That was my favorite. The price was right, and I’m going to visit in a couple of weeks to make a final decision. There’s a big lake for walking and fishing, and there were lots of trails. There’s an indoor pool, they have game rooms, and they have everything from cards to crafts. They take the residents on outings and to the doctors and grocery stores. However, they don’t have a golf course or tennis courts. "

"I have taken a tour of White Oak Village twice. We live in the same town, so it's a familiar place to us. It's very well run and very care oriented. They had lots of activities including a fitness center. The people were extremely friendly. They had lots of long-term staff members who have been there for ten to 20 years, which speaks for the facility. If we decided to go there it would be a very community-oriented and very caring place. It's different looking at it and visiting and living there though. I imagine that there are things that you can't see as a visitor, but I think it's overall a very good facility. We know quite a few people who live there. They offer transportation, and they do and plan activities. They have housekeeping in the apartment, a washer and dryer in each apartment, and meals in very nice dining rooms. It feels like a very nice and warm facility. They also have a skilled nursing facility and an assisted living component, which is small, and they are expanding, and they have a rehab center. It's a truly caring community. The connections that some of the staff develop with residents feels almost like a family situation, and that's what you're looking for when you're a senior. You don't want to be isolated. You want to be part of the community or part of a family."

"I have moved into Springhaven Estates. It's affordable, and the scenery was much better. I've only been here for two months, but I like it far better than where I was. I was living in an apartment building before, and it was just too close quarters for me. Springhaven Estates is a park full of mobile homes, but it's very upscale compared to others. The people are all very nice. I haven't found anything that I don't like about it yet. There's only one staff member, and she's wonderful. They don't serve food at the community. We all have our own kitchens, and we can drive to restaurants and stuff. There's a clubhouse with pool tables, and then there's a park with grills and all that kind of stuff."

"We live in a villa at Lake Pointe Landing. We don't get meals because I don't want meals. We have villas, patio homes, and a big house where the apartments are. There hasn't been any activity for the past year, but we now have bridge, canasta, movies, bingo, and entertainment. Next week, we're having The Duo Pianos come through the community. They have two baby-grand pianos on the back of a truck, and they are fantastic. We have lots of entertainment. There are groups of villas together. We have about 1800 square feet in ours, three bedrooms, and a den. We have a FROG (Finished Room Over Garage), and there's just a bedroom and bathroom there. You're very independent here. You own your own garage, and they take care of everything on the outside. We bought the villa. We can buy dining room tickets for lunch and dinner if we want to, but we never do. Lunch is absolutely fantastic. We have Philly cheesesteak sandwiches from Philadelphia, and the chef orders the bread from Philadelphia, which is very thin and delicious. He's an excellent chef. We have a pool, an exercise room, a big meeting place, and a chapel -- the whole nine yards. They have a living room and two libraries. They have The Harbor, which is what we call the big house. The value for the money is very good. There are sections of villas all over, and some have basements. I have a deck in the back, and it's landscaped beautifully. They do all the caretaking outside, and we have one-and-a-half garages."

"I liked Carolina Village. The people were very pleasant, and they took us around. We had a meal there. Their dining room was very pleasant, and the meal was very nice. A lot of people made their reservations to go there because it was a very popular place. A lot of people who have lived in Hendersonville for long time go there. They had all kinds of activities. "

"My dad will be moving into Lakewood Independent Living. The facility was very nice, and the staff was nice. The amenities were good for what's included. Breakfast and dinner were included. The activities that were on-site were included in the monthly fee. They would do weekly housekeeping in the apartment. They would get a storage locker on their floor for any items that they wanted to store that were locked. There was a laundry and dryer unit in each apartment. They had a concierge that would help in the event they needed anything. The staff was very friendly, and helpful, and answered questions. She was very thorough on her tour, and very accommodating to us."

"Everybody seemed to be satisfied at Ashlan Village. The staff was extremely helpful and cordial. It's beautiful out there. There's a beautiful sitting room where families can visit privately. It's well-furnished and looked beautiful on the inside."

"The one thing that I would say about Fletcher was that it was quite hilly. If you went into the place where you needed wheelchair or something like that, going around the independent living side would be a little difficult, but if you went into the assisted living, then you were fine. The housing itself was excellent. I liked that they had a lot of sunlight. The building as a whole was brighter with natural sunlight. As far as the independent living facility, other than the fact that it was silly, was a little difficult to go around, and had a lot of corners, I would rate it a 5. "

"Bayberry Retirement Inn was a nice place. It had big rooms. It was clean and neat. It did not have an odor. "

"I toured Trinity View. Its location is relatively quiet. The people seem very happy. The staff seems excellent. The common areas seem very good."

"I moved to Summit Hills since March. The staff really care. I enjoy the activities that I participate in and have met many wonderful people. The therapist are great and I recommend Summit Hills to anyone who is looking for a community."

"I visited and I was pleased with the manner that they treated the people with dignity and kindness. They were caring, and they seemed sincere. The rooms had closets and a bed. I saw the activities that they had and the calendar of their events."
