"I was very impressed with Harmony at Reynolds Mountain. I wanted to move in tomorrow. I thought the size of the whole apartment was very nice. I would move in tomorrow if I could. I'm at the point where I really want to be out of here and then to a place like that because it was so interesting. They have a cocktail hour twice a week, they have all kinds of activities that sounded good, and they would take you to the doctor's appointments. The only thing I have a hard time with was because I had to park in the visitor's parking lot, it was very difficult for me to walk up the hill to where you had to go in. My son came with me and helped me up the hill. I think if I'm in independent living and I'm driving my car that would be somewhat of a problem because then I would have to walk up the hill to get to the front door. But I thought the apartments that they showed me are very promising. Everything was there. They had beautiful kitchens, stoves, and refrigerators. They have a patio downstairs. I thought the person who gave the tour was excellent. One other thing that I think they should have had that they didn't, is that if you're living in the independent section, there are no railings on long walks to the dining rooms and whatnot. I think if you're independent, they figure that you can do anything you want. You can live independently but show me a railing on a long walk. The staff was phenomenal. She was very, very good. "

"We toured Julian Woods Retirement Community. It's very nice for retirement. There's no assisted living or any medical care, and it's truly independent. The apartments were very nice. They were roomy and had everything you would need, like kitchen appliances, and so forth. The staff was very knowledgeable, and he answered all our questions. They have a movie room and a room where they do puzzles. It's very expensive. It's all brand new."

"We visited and everything seemed fine. It was an independent living unit but we were looking for an assisted living unit. The room looked sufficient. Their dining room was okay. They had some activities like bingo. It was homey. The only negative aspect was that they were under the fly path of the airport; so, it was noisy with the planes going all over. "

"My sister has moved into Serene Haven Apartments. It's a lovely place. It checked all of my boxes. The director is very knowledgeable. She was a social worker, so she's very experienced. It had everything that my sister needed. The apartments are fully furnished. It's minimal furniture, but it's what's needed, and it even provide a lift chair for my sister. If you don't want a couch, they will put a lift. They provide the TV and utilities. They provide one meal a day. The cook is lovely. My sister says, "Could you give me fruit instead of cake?" The next day, she had all of the fruit that she asked for. It's bright, sunny, clean, and brand new. It's renovated, and it's beautiful. I've met the director, and Max who works with the director, but he also does maintenance. They were all very personable. They all took the time to answer my questions. It was a church and it's renovated. It is a very small community. The dining room is beautiful, and they even have a stage in the dining room where they organize events and have entertainment come in. The director said, "Anything you need, you just let us know. If you want a grab bar here or if you need more grab bars along the aisle or the hallways, we can put things up for your sister that she would need." My sister is very picky, and she has been eating every day here. She has eaten better in two weeks than she has in a year. She goes every day for meals. Last night, she said, "I'm going to have steamed cabbage" because they had leftovers and so she went and got leftovers. That's a miracle in itself. I looked at a studio room, which was very small. They're currently renovating to add like a two-bedroom, two-bathroom. There are larger units, but hers is a one-bedroom, one-bath. The closet is very large. It's a lovely closet and it has a big pantry. The kitchen is a full kitchen, but it's small. It has a microwave, a stove, a brand new refrigerator with a bottom freezer, and a little teeny table for one person. The furniture is efficiency-sized because they're small rooms. It's designed to fit in the spaces. She has plenty of space for the things that she needs. They gave her the bed and the mattress, and the mattress is comfortable. They had some Halloween activities. They schedule like going out because it's right in the historic uptown. They have activities that take people out. She's getting to know these people and she's interacting with them, which is a huge plus. This is within her monthly budget, as opposed to assisted living, which she didn't need, which was $5,000, $6,000 a month and not even furnished. The apartment units have their own storage rooms for storing seasonal items. They have a pavilion out that's accessible because it's on the ground. No stairs. She can invite people over. There's a grill there. It's right next to a city park that is being built. They've got a skateboard going on right now. If she wants to come out and walk, she's got a place accessible where she can go around and walk."

"I liked Givens Highland Farms of the communities I visited. It's very nice. It's very upscale, it's not cheap, and there's nothing bad to say about it. It was the best of them all. People in sales are the only people I talked to. They've very nice rooms. The construction is fairly new there. I was going there simply to check what the units were like and what the menus were. And that's what I was checking them for. I'm a very active person, I wasn't interested in what was going on. It's a very good menu. The salesperson was very nice and thoughtful. It was pretty, all landscaped. The dining area was very modern, very pleasant, and attractive."

"My grandmother was at Marjorie McCune Assisted Living. The thing that rubbed me the wrong way was that their new administrator never returned my call, and she would just have other people get in touch with me when I really wanted to talk to her. I don't want to give her a bad review, I'm sure she was busy, but I never actually got to talk to her. I also can't say I could give them the fairest review because they did not specialize in memory care. They only did what they could, and they couldn't do everything that my grandmother would need them to do because of her condition. The assisted living there was great once my grandmother had her own little cottage on the property. They had a housekeeper, a nurse, a PT, and all the people would come into her house, and she was really happy over there. Then they started to notice that she would leave the stove on and other things that were a danger to herself, so they moved her into a room which was smaller than her bedroom. It was a shared room with someone else, they had one shared bathroom, and there was hardly any room to do anything in there. None of us were really thrilled about her new place. It was a very tiny room, and she was paying a lot for it. It's a good place for people to be living in an assisted kind of way; however, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone for long-term care. It's OK if you want $5,000 a month for one single studio room, but if you can't afford it and you need better care at the same time, then that would make things really difficult. I would just recommend that people should know that it's not really a memory care facility at all. The biggest problem there was that they had so many residents and so many employees, and with that number of employees coming in and out every day you're bound to get COVID. It just didn't seem like a home, it just seemed like a temporary place to be, and yet that was my grandmother's home, and none of us really liked that. They had activities, they had decent food, and the staff was really sweet. However, the facility's layout, even for me, was kinda confusing. They had these really long hallways filled with people in just about every direction, and for somebody who has dementia or Alzheimer's, you would really get lost."

"This retirement home is a great place for my grandparents. They currently live in their own home on the premises, where they are surrounded by neighbors, all of who have served in the Methodist Church. The best thing about this place is that they have their own home and can maintain their independence, but with certain services that make us (their family) and them feel better. For example, there is a yearly full cleaning of the house. Gardening and maintenance is taken care of (unless they want to do it themseleves). In addition, there is an assisted living home right in the same complex. They are able to visit with those that are not in as good of health as they are. And, if something should happen, there are pulleys and an intercom system in their home. Should they need additional assistance, they already know the staff and can even move into the assisted living space without having to transition communities or space. They are very happy there. "

"I'm looking at staying here at Givens Gerber Park, at least until COVID is under more control. I have a good situation, and I feel safe. The first two buildings that they built were government subsidized buildings. The building that I am in has a buy-in, but it's a very reasonable amount. The rent is based on your income, but to a certain amount. You have to have a certain amount of income to be able to pay it, but there are several amenities such as my cable, a television, and my internet, and $125 to spend in the cafe a month. It was very delightful until COVID. They have been one of the stricter places, which is good, but it has been less enjoyable because of COVID. As it was originally established, I found it to be a pleasant place to be. There are single men, single women, and couples. They have one- and two-bedroom apartments, and they're hotel style, not garden apartments, and I'm on the third floor. There aren't as many activities as I might think, but they have a clinic. It's a doctor's office and it has a PA there certain days of the week, but nothing I'm paying includes that. It's all another cost to use them, but that has been provided since I came. I could go there and get my blood work done. The food was better when we ordered a la carte. We have choices on the menu for the week, but it's not as good. I can't blame them as much as I can because of the situation. My reasons for looking at moving is I'm anticipating a different level of care. I have back pain that limits me on getting everything done. I have to pay for somebody to come clean for me. I have an apartment and I found at least the kitchen to be bigger than two of the more expensive facilities in the Asheville area. They're all somewhat handicap equipped, but mine in particular has a walk-in shower and some of them have tubs, and you request what you want. The staff is very cordial. The maintenance guys are just like your buddy kind of thing. They're really nice. The kitchen ladies are very nice. They have very friendly staff."

"Compton Place is a nice place to live. The rooms are real nice and spacious. My aunt has a giant one bedroom with a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. Some people have two bedrooms. It's real nice, but they're horrible when it comes to management. You can't find anyone when you need help or need to find anything out at all. They're just non-existent. They don't answer the phone, and it's very hard to get a person at all. It's the only thing I don't like about the place."

"The one thing that I would say about Fletcher was that it was quite hilly. If you went into the place where you needed wheelchair or something like that, going around the independent living side would be a little difficult, but if you went into the assisted living, then you were fine. The housing itself was excellent. I liked that they had a lot of sunlight. The building as a whole was brighter with natural sunlight. As far as the independent living facility, other than the fact that it was silly, was a little difficult to go around, and had a lot of corners, I would rate it a 5. "

"We went to look at Lake Pointe Landing. We looked at the two-bedroom apartment and the building. It was a very comfortable and very nice layout. Most of the apartments looked like they had a balcony screened in, which was nice. The dining area, kitchen, and laundry were a little tight. But all of the other rooms were a good size. The assisted living facility has very nice one-bedroom apartments with a little kitchenette area. They had a library, a pool, and a lot of nice little areas to sit in. We met a resident because she showed us her apartment, and she enjoys it there. She said the meals were wonderful. The people are nice. I had an overall good feeling."

"I have moved into Springhaven Estates. It's affordable, and the scenery was much better. I've only been here for two months, but I like it far better than where I was. I was living in an apartment building before, and it was just too close quarters for me. Springhaven Estates is a park full of mobile homes, but it's very upscale compared to others. The people are all very nice. I haven't found anything that I don't like about it yet. There's only one staff member, and she's wonderful. They don't serve food at the community. We all have our own kitchens, and we can drive to restaurants and stuff. There's a clubhouse with pool tables, and then there's a park with grills and all that kind of stuff."
