Independent Living Communities in Hendersonville, NC

"We went to look at Lake Pointe Landing. We looked at the two-bedroom apartment and the building. It was a very comfortable and very nice layout. Most of the apartments looked like they had a balcony screened in, which was nice. The dining area, kitchen, and laundry were a little tight. But all of the other rooms were a good size. The assisted living facility has very nice one-bedroom apartments with a little kitchenette area. They had a library, a pool, and a lot of nice little areas to sit in. We met a resident because she showed us her apartment, and she enjoys it there. She said the meals were wonderful. The people are nice. I had an overall good feeling."

"My mother-in-law was at Carolina Village. If you're very mobile, there are all kinds of interest groups. They have a gym, a woodworking facility, a pool, and all kinds of physical therapy activities. It was a very lovely place. They had a chef, and the food was prepared. They had individual selections. The food was very good and plentiful. They have walking trails, trees, and a pond. It was very nice, pretty, and serene. The staff was very caring. They knew each client who lived there by name. They had someone come in to help clean the apartment every two weeks. She had to put a large sum down when she moved in, and then monthly. She could afford it, but not everyone can afford it."

"The one thing that I would say about Fletcher was that it was quite hilly. If you went into the place where you needed wheelchair or something like that, going around the independent living side would be a little difficult, but if you went into the assisted living, then you were fine. The housing itself was excellent. I liked that they had a lot of sunlight. The building as a whole was brighter with natural sunlight. As far as the independent living facility, other than the fact that it was silly, was a little difficult to go around, and had a lot of corners, I would rate it a 5. "

"I have moved into Springhaven Estates. It's affordable, and the scenery was much better. I've only been here for two months, but I like it far better than where I was. I was living in an apartment building before, and it was just too close quarters for me. Springhaven Estates is a park full of mobile homes, but it's very upscale compared to others. The people are all very nice. I haven't found anything that I don't like about it yet. There's only one staff member, and she's wonderful. They don't serve food at the community. We all have our own kitchens, and we can drive to restaurants and stuff. There's a clubhouse with pool tables, and then there's a park with grills and all that kind of stuff."

"I toured Trinity View. Its location is relatively quiet. The people seem very happy. The staff seems excellent. The common areas seem very good."

"I've chosen Ardenwoods Retirement Community for its overall ambiance, for the benefits they offer, and the activities they offer. They have many activities, and many amenities. They will be doing all my packing and unpacking. They just have a lot to offer. They have an indoor heated swimming pool, and the grounds are lovely."

"I'm looking at staying here at Givens Gerber Park, at least until COVID is under more control. I have a good situation, and I feel safe. The first two buildings that they built were government subsidized buildings. The building that I am in has a buy-in, but it's a very reasonable amount. The rent is based on your income, but to a certain amount. You have to have a certain amount of income to be able to pay it, but there are several amenities such as my cable, a television, and my internet, and $125 to spend in the cafe a month. It was very delightful until COVID. They have been one of the stricter places, which is good, but it has been less enjoyable because of COVID. As it was originally established, I found it to be a pleasant place to be. There are single men, single women, and couples. They have one- and two-bedroom apartments, and they're hotel style, not garden apartments, and I'm on the third floor. There aren't as many activities as I might think, but they have a clinic. It's a doctor's office and it has a PA there certain days of the week, but nothing I'm paying includes that. It's all another cost to use them, but that has been provided since I came. I could go there and get my blood work done. The food was better when we ordered a la carte. We have choices on the menu for the week, but it's not as good. I can't blame them as much as I can because of the situation. My reasons for looking at moving is I'm anticipating a different level of care. I have back pain that limits me on getting everything done. I have to pay for somebody to come clean for me. I have an apartment and I found at least the kitchen to be bigger than two of the more expensive facilities in the Asheville area. They're all somewhat handicap equipped, but mine in particular has a walk-in shower and some of them have tubs, and you request what you want. The staff is very cordial. The maintenance guys are just like your buddy kind of thing. They're really nice. The kitchen ladies are very nice. They have very friendly staff."

"I have taken a tour of White Oak Village twice. We live in the same town, so it's a familiar place to us. It's very well run and very care oriented. They had lots of activities including a fitness center. The people were extremely friendly. They had lots of long-term staff members who have been there for ten to 20 years, which speaks for the facility. If we decided to go there it would be a very community-oriented and very caring place. It's different looking at it and visiting and living there though. I imagine that there are things that you can't see as a visitor, but I think it's overall a very good facility. We know quite a few people who live there. They offer transportation, and they do and plan activities. They have housekeeping in the apartment, a washer and dryer in each apartment, and meals in very nice dining rooms. It feels like a very nice and warm facility. They also have a skilled nursing facility and an assisted living component, which is small, and they are expanding, and they have a rehab center. It's a truly caring community. The connections that some of the staff develop with residents feels almost like a family situation, and that's what you're looking for when you're a senior. You don't want to be isolated. You want to be part of the community or part of a family."

"My mom likes living at College Walk! The staff is extremely friendly. Maintenance is quick to respond to issues. There are numerous activities for the residents. My mom enjoys the dining room or ordering her food and eating on her patio. The interior halls and sitting areas were recently updated and the grounds are always immaculate. "

"Tryon Estates at Columbus was friendly. It was lovely. It was a wonderful place. We did stay one night and it was great. My experience with them was excellent. The rooms and surroundings were excellent. The place was excellent, beautiful and friendly. They had terrific food. There were a lot of activities. They had very nice people. They were intelligent and respectable. "

"My friend has been very comfortably placed at Brooks Howell. As far as I know, it has all the different levels so if you go in at one level and you need stepped up care, you can stay there and you'd be given more care. She needed to be in the nursing home. She couldn't cook her own meals. She can dress herself and she is allowed to be taken out. I wanted to take her out to church in some days and they were very careful to make sure they got her sister's permission. They had good methods. Then when I was allowed to take her out, they're happy to see me and they're pleased she's getting out. I have to sign her and then sign her out so I like the way the home is run. When we've taken her to church, it's been over lunch time. As soon as we've got back, they brought her dinner, too. They asked her before she left what she wanted. As soon as she got back, they brought it to her room for her as they've already eaten. I know some people who have Alzheimer's or some level of dementia. They look after them as well. I have actually volunteered there some years ago that's how I was familiar with this. It's lovely, clean and very friendly. She has her own bedroom and her own bathroom with very cozy fire. It's been nice and warm but not too warm, I think very comfortable. I have another friend who has someone in there and she's been very pleased as well. I think they have activities and they're quite varied. Sometimes they're making things. Sometimes, it's entertainment and they have a very nice dining room so Helen is able to get up and go to her meals. I think she can have them brought, too, if she's not feeling well. "

"The patio homes are very spacious, the staff are energetic and engaged. Location is beautiful and accessible to amenities."

"Givens Highland Farms was a delightful place. They have apartments as well as patio homes, duplexes, and cottages. The apartments are furnished with appliances and you bring your own furniture. The best thing about it is the location because Black Mountain is just a beautiful area. We stopped there a couple of weeks ago and we had lunch with them. The food was very good. The facilities were nice and clean. They've got a lake with ducks as well as walking trails. It's just really nice."
