Located on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Spartanburg is a welcoming location for older adults who need skilled nursing. The community’s 37,399 residents and 5,983 seniors benefit from a very low cost of living that can stretch their income. Although medical expenses are close to average, health care access is good. The Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System is one of the area’s largest employers, and the Spartanburg Medical Center is rated as top performing in eight procedures. Residents also have access to a number of long-term care facilities.
Nursing homes provide the highest level of care available outside of a hospital. They’re staffed by physicians, nurses, nursing aides and skilled rehabilitation therapists. If you don’t require this level of care, you might enjoy some of the extra amenities offered by assisted living facilities, or you could hire a home health aide to help out a few times a week. Since the average cost of nursing home care is $7,026 per month according to Genworth Financial, other options can provide significant savings.
If you’re interested in learning more about nursing homes and possible alternatives, you’ll find helpful information in this guide, including cost comparisons and a directory of organizations that serve seniors in Spartanburg.

My mother has been in Physical Rehabilitation and Wellness Center of Spartanburg on Medicaid. She’s done so well that they were kinda threatening to kick her out. They said she no longer needs a skilled nursing home and she needs to go back down to assisted living, but since that time they’ve changed their mind because of the insulin shots that she takes; she needs to stay in skilled nursing. When she first went in, we researched and visited quite a few of them here in town, and that’s the one that we liked the best. Because she’s on Medicaid we’re somewhat limited as well, but that’s the one we liked the best, and she’s actually very happy there. We like it and she likes it.
Prior to March, we were very happy, but they’ve had a lot of turnovers since. Since COVID started, we haven’t been in there at all, so I can’t really comment on the current staff, because I think a lot of them have changed since March, but prior to that we were happy with all them. They were very caring and nice, and they wanted to take care of people in there. They used to call me and give me updates on my mom all the time, and they haven’t done that in quite a few months now, but I know they got their hands full with COVID. She liked the food pretty good when she first went in, but she says it’s not as good as it used to be. COVID has changed a lot of things. I don’t think they’re cooking now. They have a lot of sandwiches and soups now versus before COVID. They could go down to the dining hall, and they cooked full meals for them before.
It’s an older facility, but it’s always very clean and kept up very well. Her room is fixed up nice and they keep it clean. It’s easy to get around. We didn’t have to walk a long way when we could go visit her. The layout is pretty good. The nursing staff and the people who take care of her are a four out of five, while the administrative staff is a one or two out of five.

This is not the facility for your loved one if your loved one has dementia or Alzheimer’s. The staff lacks knowledge on working with patients with dementia related conditions. They have no real method of dealing with those who suffer with it and are very insensitive to what the families are going through. My father was initially placed for rehab, which he received very little of, because even the contract physical therapists had no ability to understand the confusion and short-term memory loss that caused my father to “refuse” therapy. He was never encouraged to be mobile or continent, and lost both of those abilities within a few months. Less than two months later, after he became a full-time resident, we were told they needed to send him to a psychiatric facility to adjust medications to deal with his wandering behavior and confusion because despite having round the clock nursing staff, aides, and doctors, the facility said they were unable to monitor the effectiveness of any new medications for his dementia. They ended up sending him to Mary Black Hospital to the psychiatric unit. My father was never the same and went downhill rapidly after that, even though WO’s doctor took him right back off all the medicines the hospital started. We had to constantly stay on top of the staff about his hygiene and assistance with feeding. Again, they had no strategy to deal his dementia to accomplish even basic care or medication administration. We walked in to many heart-wrenching scenes and felt like we constantly had to fight to get good care. It was the worst, most exhausting experience of my life. White Oak Manor has a nice new building, but it will make no difference as long as they fail to educate the staff and administration.

My mother is currently staying in Magnolia Manor in Inman. She doesn’t want me to say anything about it but I do not like it. I’m not happy with them.
I can’t get in to see her room, I can only get to her window, and from there I think it’s OK and it seems clean. They are understaffed though, there is not enough help, and the residents are suffering because of it. That’s my opinion. They are overworked and rude and they have bad attitudes.
She’s in a shared room with an old TV, like the kind before those flat-screens, and she does not have the remote to it. The room looks clean, but usually she gets the nurse to pull the curtain between the bed, so from the window I could not really see what the other part of the room looks like. The staff were really nice when I went up there and they raised the blinds for me so I could see my mom a little bit, but she said they are not friendly to her.
Their food is horrible, she said it’s basically slop. Her clothes keep going missing; I have spent a fortune replacing them. I don’t know if they get stolen or they get mixed up in the laundry. They won’t allow me to do her laundry because of the COVID. I understand that, but I just wish I could do her laundry myself.
There are no activities for her. I don’t know if they don’t have enough staff or what but they don’t do any activities. She does nothing but stay in bed, they’ll get her up, and put her in a chair if she tells them to, but if she doesn’t then she doesn’t get up. When they do get her up she is left there for hours and hours without being put back in bed. She’ll call me from her cellphone and I’d call the front desk and get a nurse to get back there and put her in bed. That’s been done several times. The nurses are very nice, she says, it’s the CNAs that she thinks don’t like her. They’re just very overworked and rude.

Nursing Home Costs in Spartanburg, South Carolina
Nursing homes in Spartanburg are about 10% more affordable than the national average. Facilities typically charge $7,026 for semiprivate rooms and $7,817 for private rooms.
The Cost of Nursing Home Care in Nearby Cities

Local seniors pay $272 less per month than other South Carolinians and $730 less than the typical American. Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Spartanburg, South Carolina
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
