Atlanta is the capital city of Georgia and is known for the important role that it played in the Civil War. The city has a population of about 488,800, and 9.7% of residents are over the age of 65. Seniors who reside in Atlanta have access to excellent medical facilities at Emory University Hospital. This teaching hospital is nationally ranked in 8 specialties by the USN Best Hospital System. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020, the average monthly cost of a semiprivate room in nursing home care in Atlanta is $6,950 which is about $700 less than the national average of $7,756.
Nursing home care provides a high level of assistance and medical care for seniors who have a chronic illness or are medically frail. This level of care can be very expensive due to the large number of qualified medical staff required at each facility. Family members may want to consider alternative care options if their loved one does not require a high level of medical care. Care options in Atlanta include assisted living and home care.
This guide looks at the cost of nursing home care in Atlanta and alternative options.

Horrible toxic place with very little help for patients. My wife was bedridden and they hardly ever changed her diaper. She sat in poop for almost 8 hours. I was told that if I cleaned her it would be a violation and she would be thrown out. She needed the physical therapy so we obeyed and I was forced to sit by her and watch her suffering day after day. Once when the caretaker was changing her the side rail of the bed BROKE OFF and she would have tumbled to the floor had I not caught her. They were constantly late with her pain medication, once for DAYS, causing her to go through painful withdrawal and diarrhea ( which took them hours to change each bout) and they wouldn’t even give her anti diarrhea medication. So there she was in a defective hospital bed that would not go up high enough for her to sit up and eat safely, with a diaper so full of diarrhea that it was being forced up her vaginal areas, in severe pain over her whole body from her arthritis, injuries and then the meds being withheld. And then PT shows up. Now how could she participate? At least PT made someone come change her because the staff was not even slightly alarmed that I knew of her situation. Several caregivers growled at her or threatened her. One even hurt her 3 times before my wife told the head nurse and she was replaced with a different one making her have to wait even longer because that one worked in another hall. At times there were NO caretakers at all until they could call temp agencies and get some in there. Breakfast served at 10AM. Vitals not taken until noon. VERY not just poor-but scary poor situation to leave her in. Practically NO help at night. The alarm on her oxygen machine went off yet nobody came. She pressed her nurse light yet nobody came. She called me, at 2am and I repeatedly called but nobody answered at the desk or any other number I had. I jumped in my car and made the 40 minute drive in a half hour. I raced to the door and receptionist was behind the desk chatting and laughing on her cell phone..I ran past her to get upstairs and as I was 20 feet from her door a caretaker from another floor went into her room after being forewarned by reception. Before you put a loved one here try calling the place at all different hours and especially the weekend. See if you approve of their lack of a response time. We had to repeatedly beg for her bloodwork to be done once a week because she was just let out of the hospital for kidney failure. The food was mediocre, the hard boiled eggs literally bounced like a small super ball. When PT could do a session they were great. They were the only reason she stayed-desparate to walk again after foot surgery removed the heels of both feet. A few of the caretakers were sweet and caring and a couple of the nurses also. I would give this place a 1/2 a point if I could. Please do not put a loved one here unless8 they are conscious and fully mobile and you have the time to come in and watch them yourself. Even then, the night shift is usually life threateningly worse. And yes I am referring to all staff not just the temp help because of Covid. It refers to administrative people also since I went right to them due to seriousness of these details. I took her out of there after only 1 month but we are praying for those left behind.

My dad is at NurseCare of Buckhead. They started with him being in a nice room when we first got him there, and then they moved him up to the fifth floor, which was more like the psychiatric floor. As soon as the elevator doors open, it has a smell of urine. My dad had to be rushed to the hospital because they did not change out his Foley and his kidney shut down. It was just a terrible situation. The fourth floor was nice and clean. They treated him much better on the fourth floor than on the fifth floor. His condition went down dramatically when they moved him to the fifth floor. The food is good. The presentation is good. They had a dining area, a physical therapy room, and an area for barbers and hairstylists.

This place is beyond horrible. It you want your parent to die fast THIS is the place.
Mom was OK upon arrival. She was recovering from a brief hospital stay for a UTI and needed some in-patient PT rehab before heading home. They did not let us in for 5 days. When we finally got it, we found all her belongings including glasses and hearing aids, DESPITE being clearly labeled, were crammed into the other patient’s closet I left a hidden baby-cam on her TV and confirmed: they had not been giving her either the antibiotic for the UTI nor the Tramadol the MD/Northside Hosp sent in with the transfer.
She seldom ate; while I was there, staff removed uneaten food from both patients in the room: neither had known and/or been able to reach the tray! I tried to get her into a private room but the staff was uncooperative even to threatening to block her from leaving.
The room was dark as the other patient kept the curtain closed, blocking the sunlight. There were no working overhead lights. The other patient sobbed pitifully anytime she was awake, but my mom was made of sterner stuff. She said: “Honey-bust me puta this place before they kill me-bring your Louisville Slugger if need be!”
I did and she did much better at home with part-time PT. Sorry mom, I’ll always regret not busting you out sooner!

I can’t say enough good things about AG Rhodes at Wesley Woods! From the day my mother in law got there she was welcomed as part of the “family”. Her care has been outstanding, everyone is attentive and helpful. They communicate with the family members frequently and take quick and decisive action if there is an emergency. Their quick care kept my mother in law out of the hospital when she had trouble breathing.
She says the food is good and they are respectful when a resident needs “personal care”. She’s very happy.
If you have to be in long term care, Rhodes is top notch. (I have experience with my parents at several other “good” facilities, so this is an experienced review!) 🙂

Fountainview Center for Alzheimer’s was nice, but a little bit expensive. It looked clean, light, and airy. They have activities for the wing that my mother would be in like music therapy and hand massages. I was a little put off when I made an appointment to see somebody, but she had to go out and I was not told anything about it. They have a lot of staff around and a lot of them were busy feeding the residents. The rooms varied from very small to a little bit bigger. They have a plain room where you can bring your family and there were rooms decorated with art. They had stuff around for St. Patrick’s Day. They have a ward that has rooms with boxes outside where members can store pictures and things that would remind them that it’s their room. It made the place homier. They just did not have enough parking places.

checked myself out of this facility after 2 days. Management is the problem. The facillity is old (my room wasn’t renovated. the room I was in had a bed with controls that was from the 70’s or 80’s by the design and rust on the railiings and the furniture was outdated too. I had them take the chair out it smelled like gramma’s house when she could no longer keep up cleaning. The staff tried their best, but there are not enough of them and the facility messed up by not having my medications, one of which I needed daily for me for more than a day and a half. That’s when I left (called a LYFT). The one and only time the doctor came in instead of telling me about my rehab, she was more interested in probing family questions and I realized later that she was trying to see if I had family (if your familly member is especially vulnerable I would avoid this place like the plague). The intake person also tried to give me an injection saying it was a 2 part TB shot required with the second shot given 8 days later. (yeah right). I am ex-military and knew that was a lie. I informed her that I would _not_ be taking any injections without signed documentation on what it was and why is was required and she backed down. I never saw her again after that. I lived in the area and it was not far from Piedmont Hospital were I was discharged from. I admit if I had checked for the reviews first I never would have chosen this facility. Stay far, far away. They have 2 stars or less ratings elsewhere.

The lady that gave me the tour was ok, she went over and explained everything. I only toured a certain area and they didn’t have any beds. The facility didn’t look that clean and was not impressive to me. They had a big room where a lot of people were sitting in their wheelchairs, but I didn’t particularly like it. I think they need to refurbish and update their facilities. The little courtyard looked horrible compared to the other place I saw. How they take care of the residents was like they were just pushing them like cattle to be in their community room. It’s located about 15 minutes from a hospital.

Although there are some nice people at the facility, I have found it difficult to get a few of the night shift nurses to do anything for my disabled husband. He has a track record of severe UTIs, and I have to beg them each time to do something when he starts having an infection. It’s taken a week to get any help this time, and he is in such pain that we are asking to go to the emergency room and they say that doesn’t need to be done even though he is begging for Help From Pain. Could not legitimately recommend this facility and in the process of trying to find somewhere else.

Please DO NOT send your loved ones to this location! My Stepdad was sent here for rehabilitation. He was placed in a room with no tv, rust everywhere, broken toilet, and his bed was next to a closet filled with trash, mold, and Lord knows what else. He was covered in piss the next day when my mom came to visit. Keep in mind he can’t walk, and doesn’t have bed rails on his bed. This is clearly unacceptable. If you cannot provide a clean and friendly environment this is not the business for you! People are trusting that they loved ones will be taking care of and not placed in a jail cell like room with no real care. I feel so sorry for anyone who is there that doesn’t have family, I can’t imagine the hell and pain they feel. My prayers are with you! I need to find out if this is government funded and do they know about the conditions this facility is in?????? I cried after seeing these pictures and hearing the pain in my moms voice from the way she was treated by some of the staff. Please understand this is not the place for any human being! It smells of urine and looks and smell of contamination. I know this is a last resort for many as it was for us but the love we have for him would not allow us to leave him in there staring at the ceiling and in tears.

My cousin is in Manor Care Rehabilitation Center – Decatur. They seem to be very nice and caring people running the place. Most of the staff has been very kind and caring. They care about the people who are there. The meals I saw were good. The place is not fancy, but adequate. I’ve seen them clean often. They have a small courtyard out front. The reason we used it was because it was convenient to the hospital. It’s an older facility but it’s adequate.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Atlanta, Georgia
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
