Located in the San Gabriel Valley about 20 miles east of Downtown Los Angeles, Glendora offers access to recreational and cultural amenities, health care facilities and flexible long-term care options. It has a fairly large senior community that makes up nearly 16% of its 53,000 residents. Warm weather and good air quality promote a therapeutic environment for older adults recovering from serious injuries and illnesses, and affordable health care costs benefit those managing ongoing conditions. The city is home to Emanate Health Foothill Presbyterian Hospital, which specializes in orthopedics, cardiology and palliative care.
Glendora also meets the needs of its older residents through access to several nursing homes. These facilities offer personal care, rehabilitative therapies and around-the-clock medical care and monitoring for those with significant medical needs. This type of care is the costliest long-term care option in the city, with the Genworth 2021 Cost of Care Survey reporting seniors pay $9,125 for shared rooms. Assisted living or home care may be affordable alternatives for those who only need personal care or limited skilled nursing services.
This guide provides more details on nursing home costs in Glendora, as well as an overview of agencies and programs that serve seniors.

My mom was at Gladstone Care and Rehabilitation. I don’t know if it was due to COVID, but the staff wasn’t at all on the same page in regard to my mom’s care. They only allowed appointments. The appointment was for all the members, but my mom went in at the beginning of the week and so we couldn’t make an appointment until the end. Our concern was not so much with the room, but so much with the communication with the staff. The management staff and nursing staff were not on the same page. My mom was not able to benefit from the physical therapy facility. She was not comfortable because the point was for her to have physical therapy, and she kept saying that she wasn’t having physical therapy, so she was not very comfortable. She’s in the right state of mind, so she understands when she’s been lied to, and some people are lying, so she was not comfortable feeling that she’s there but not having physical therapy. She felt uneasy with that.

We chose Glendora Canyon Transitional Care Unit for my loved one because they could take care of his needs. The residents seem to be happy. They are interacting even if they’re just sitting out in a wheelchair near the nursing center so they could be a part of activities. They keep everybody clean and receptive to that. It is a bit of a challenge when they get new residents, but they try to learn and meet the needs of that person.
I think the administrator is always open. He responds, even on the weekends, if I text him. They had a care management meeting within 48 hours of my loved one’s arrival where all of the heads of each of the departments came and explained to us how they tailored to meet his needs from the nursing care to the rehab care (both occupational and physical therapy) and the goals that they had set. Culinary was there to talk about his diet and the activity person was there to talk about how they were trying to stimulate his mind and also to get him engaged with other people. You can tell the staff and the administrators are engaged and that they work hard.
His appetite is increasing. He’s eating anywhere from 50% to 75% of his food. It is an older facility and so just the fact that it needs some upgrades, that kind of puts the facility a little lower. However, they are keeping it very clean, considering it’s older. They mentioned they’re going to try to do a facelift. If they don’t do the facelift but they’re taking care of the residents, it’s better for me that they’re taking care of the residents.

I’m going to preference this review by saying caring for psych patients is HARD, EXHAUSTING WORK.
I have a family member who is in their psych unit. I’ve found the social workers and staff to be responsive to all of my inquiries and genuinely concerned for the health, welfare and general living conditions of my family member. The facility has activities for the residents on a regular basis
As with many facilities the food isn’t 5 star, but we must keep in mind this is a hospital, not a resort. That being said, I do wish they would use more quality ingredients with more variety for those clients who can enjoy a more varied menu.
The facility buildings are old, the maintenance staff does the best they can with what they have to work with. I suspect the owners of the facility are dealing with a limited amount of funding with what SSA and private insurance pay (plus they have to make a profit) and the general cost of healthcare rising exponentially.
It has been my experience, if you want your loved one to receive good care, you have to be an involved participant in that care. Be vocal, courteous, and be relational.

My relative is a resident of Mesa Glen Care Center. When she calls, they don’t go right away to take care of her needs. Sometimes they bring her food that she doesn’t like, even though she has told them she doesn’t like it.
They gave her a different room. For quite some time, she was complaining that the overhead light above her bed was not on. She needs a light to be on all the time. They needed to put in a brighter light, but they didn’t do it. Sometimes her cell phone has gone missing. We let them know, and they say, "Oh, well, we’ll do a search for it." Then they find it. The facility seems to be clean. It’s just that it’s an older place, so it doesn’t seem to be cheerful.

We’ve been residents of Pilgrim Place for several years and we chose them because at that time, they’re only accepting missionaries, ministers and heads of non-profit agencies. Since then, the admission procedures have changed and it’s now open to anyone above 60 years of age. They have a board that’s very interested of our being and takes good care of us. The staff is responsive and very supportive of us for the most part. We have about 250 residents in all levels of care, the residents are progressive thinkers and are caring and active. The amenities include a swimming pool, a fitness center, and healthcare center and clinic where I can call a nurse any time day or night. We also have a pendant so that if I need help I can push that button and somebody will come. The dining service is outstanding, and the community is very open to the fact that residents come up with great ideas for being concerned about world affairs, promoting diversity within our community. We also have Eucharistic circles on a weekly basis, people come in to help us with yoga and Tai chi. we’re not a chandelier place and we don’t have golf courses and such. We’re democratic in a sense that when we go to the dining hall, a computer scrambles us up so every day and we get to know each other that way. So we dont have cliques forming around the dinner table so that’s really wonderful. The food and service are exceptional, we’ve had really nice things like lamb shanks and Cornish game hens.

The interior has been remodeled and is very clean; I didn’t detect any odors. The staff was very friendly and seemed to know the residents by name. The rooms were very nice and spacious; residents can bring their own furniture. The rehab room was very nice and well equipped because they focus on maintaining an active lifestyle and continuous learning. The menu was appetizing with fresh offerings.

They make sure you get showers or your baths, they make sure therapy is done, and they make sure you’re comfortable. They constantly check up on you as opposed to a lot of facilities that don’t do that. When the call light is on they’re right there on time. My husband hasn’t gotten in that far with their activities just yet, but they have activities. He is in rehabilitation. The staff is excellent. Facility is excellent. I like that they’re attentive and that they’re concerned about the residents’ well-being. They’re taking good, universal precautions for the residents, and making sure everyone is tested weekly for the COVID. I like all of that. Every facility should do that.

My grandfather has been the primary caregiver for my grandmother for the last 30 years, and Santa Teresita Manor is the ONLY place that he trusts to care for his wife. We managed to get her into their care days before the Covid-19 epidemic froze all new admissions to long term care facilities.
Care and Commitment to your Loved ones:First off, you don’t need to be Catholic to be welcomed there. Their service is to all regardless of faith. Before admission to the Manor, one of the nuns sits with your family and discusses the needs of your loved one and the family. It covered way more than I would ever have imagined, and covered many things that would not have occurred to us. It really helped to calm a lot of the anxiety and fears that my grandfather had been suffering from.
They toured us around the facility and my grandfather even became a bit excited! The facility was very sanitary in appearance and odor (super important to me), more intimate and less "hospital" feeling in decor, nicely kept up, and perfect for my grandmother! It had great facilities, and the residents did not appear to be depressed and unhappy (I’ve been elsewhere and not had the same experiences).
The nuns at Santa Teresita joined their order due to their passion for caring for the physical, mental, and spiritual care for our loved ones. I can absolutely attest to their care in all 3 categories! Both my grandfather and I have noticed a steady upswing in my grandmother’s mood since entering Santa Teresita (sometimes you can miss signs of depression when you’re living with a situation for so long). Their service and commitment is outstanding. These nuns and caregivers are outstanding in their care and attentiveness. They call any time there is any change of any kind in your loved one! Whether it be doctor visit results, +/- 3 lbs weight change, diet change recommendations, EVERYTHING!
Response to Covid-19:
Santa Teresita had possibly the fastest response to the Covid-19 epidemic in all of California. They immediately locked down and implemented the strictest of policies to ensure the safety of their staff and those under their care (including use of completely separate facilities and staff for those patients under quarantine).
We get emails once or twice weekly with updates with general updates, plus Covid-19 positivity rates at the facility. I can happily state that there have been NO NEW CASES for over a month now! IN ADDITION, ALL STAFF AND RESIDENTS HAVE RECEIVED BOTH VACCINE SHOTS!!! Santa Teresita had gotten all their patients and staff BOTH shots before I had even managed to get ONE shot for my grandfather! Outstanding!
Visitations and facilitating communication:This has been the key to keeping my grandparents going during the last year. My grandmother is a quadriplegic, and on a daily basis she has someone who assists her in using Facetime with my grandfather. They also help her go through her emails and letters and read them aloud to her. Visitations have depended on the state policies and positivity rates, but recently we have been able to schedule regular, in person, socially distanced visits with 2 or fewer people present at a time (the rest wait outside and swap placed). This has been an awesome development, and one we have all been thrilled about!
Santa Teresita gets two thumbs up, 5 stars, and 10/10 from our family!

I am not pleased at the moment with the care my family member is receiving.
When a patient needs help they shouldn’t have to keep pressing their nurse call button for over an hour with no response. Time and time again. It seems to me that their job is to take care of patients so that is what their priority should be. From my observation their priority is to stand at the nurses station and gossip.
The rooms are drab. There is 1 window but unless you are in the bed next to the window you will not see out as the curtain between the beds is usually closed.
I understand that Healthcare is short staffed these days due to covid and many being forced out of their positions by unfair mandates but nurses generally really care about their patients and I just do not see that at this facility.
If you have other options I would seriously consider them.

My mom stayed at Casa Bonita Convalescent. She was around more sick people and it was kind of scary for her. She had a sharp mind at the time. I have nothing bad to say about them because they did all they could. The staff was OK, and there weren’t any problems. They keep busy and it’s not like they would help you right away. They have a routine to follow, otherwise they’d spend too much time on one patient. The management staff was really nice and helpful though. My mom’s room was decent and she had her own bathroom. It was pretty good-sized, comfortable, and had a window. She went to therapy, gave her baths, and did a perm and haircut for her as needed, which she was happy about.

My sister is now in Monrovia Post Acute. The thing that I like the most is that it seems every single person that’s employed there is so very caring, and they give their attention to the patient. It’s really remarkable. The only thing that I don’t like is that they put three people in a room and usually one of them is very ill. The food is not very tasty, according to my sister. She just can’t eat some of the stuff. Their activity room is closed, because of COVID they still aren’t making activities in one particular room. However, the activity manager brings things around, like if they want to color on paper or if they want to do crafts in their room, they provide those things. They don’t have a salon facility there but they have physical therapy that is separate, and it’s a very good program. It’s located close to a hospital, and the freeway is about two blocks down.

My mother is now in Country Villa Claremont Health. The place is nice and the staff there is very good. She tells them if she needs to be fed and they feed her, if she needs to be changed then they change her, and while I’m here everything is fine. My mom wouldn’t eat food for a long time, but in this place, they cook homemade food or meals from scratch and she likes it. She’s really happy and healthy here. They have speech therapy, physical therapy, OT, they have events, candle-lit dinners, and a lot of good things for the residents. They also have carnivals for the children. It’s a very large community, it’s clean, and the grass is cut, so it’s nice. They have a little patio that the people can use, and we can have parties here.

I have read the reviews of this facility and am very concerned about the quality of care. Yet I must recognize one members of the staff who was extremely helpful to us. I picked up my sister-in-law to take her to her sister’s funeral and Dillon assisted us in getting her into the car and back out when we returned. He was friendly, helpful, and knew what he was doing. We so appreciated his help and want others to know.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Glendora, CA
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
