While the density of seniors in Saint Louis is lower than state and national averages, there are still more than 40,000 older adults in the city that may be at risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. According to the CDC, 842 Saint Louis residents died from Alzheimer’s in 2020. This accounted for 8.71% of all deaths, 0.8% higher than it was in 2016. The state of Missouri has a task force that aims to improve lives for families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. One of its goals is to improve dementia care in Saint Louis and other cities.

I talked to the staff, and they weren’t very accommodating. They would not work with you. It was either you have the money or you don’t, so I didn’t care for that.
It’s an absolutely beautiful place. It was my number one choice until they wouldn’t work with me. They wouldn’t do anything, and they had a flippant attitude. Their attitude was take it or leave it.

I liked St Louis Altenheim, especially the fact that they can switch over to Medicare when you need it. They were all inclusive. The outside area was a little iffy, and I guess that was just because I’m not used to a busy street. Once you go inside, you forget about the outside. They have it set up really nice, and I loved the view from the patio.
The person who toured us to the memory care area was great. She was informative and was actually patient with us because my mom was with me on the tour. I saw the dining room, the sitting room, and the family room. They were all gorgeous. The dining room was spacious with tables, and everything was set up nicely. I think my mom would be comfortable there.

When we went to Avalon Memory Care-St. Louis, we were greeted exactly on time. The place was immaculately clean. It’s set up like a huge ranch-style home. There’s a kitchen, a living room, and a dining area. The rooms were like in a hallway that goes out to one of the greater rooms. So, it doesn’t give you that institutional feeling. We were there during lunch and they had the dining area set up more like a home. There was a huge kitchen with an open counter where you could see them preparing the food, and it was nice.
They were able to answer all my questions as far as if a room was available and were just very helpful. The staff ratio was phenomenal. I asked the gentleman if there were any more questions that I should have asked and he was the one who mentioned their ratio and that was wonderful. It was a question I would have never even asked. He understood that I was just starting to look and I felt comfortable.
They had a shared apartment and a studio apartment. They were in the process of repainting and re-carpeting once we got into the studio. Some of the other residents had their rooms open, so we were able to look in. It was a one-room with a bathroom, shower, and vanity area. You could bring in your own furniture or they can help you supply different things. The one good thing that unit had was it had an outdoor area where, at their discretion, they could go out. There’s a big iron fence at the end, but still, they had a patio and a courtyard. I’ve never seen that in any other place before.

I did a tour of Mother of Perpetual Help. I like the facility, the rooms were big, and they were nice. I like that they had a little kitchenette in there, and a spacious walk-in closet. The rooms were a good size, and the facility is clean. They have a little courtyard in the middle. It’s surrounded by buildings, so if they would get out of memory care, they wouldn’t be on the grounds outside; they’d be in this courtyard. The staff who showed me around was very helpful, she’s very nice. It’s a little bit older building but it’s nice and they’ve kept it well. The only thing I didn’t like about it is where it’s located because there’s nothing around there. If I would want to take my mom out for ice cream for an afternoon or something or go to McDonald’s or something, there’s nothing around there. I’m not from there, so there might be something somewhere else, but right in the immediate area, there’s nothing around, no eating places, or anything.

My wife has been a resident at Bethesda Southgate in the memory care area for a little over 2 years. I chose southgate after visiting many different locations. I have had some experience in the past with elder family members at other facilities and I had a good idea of what to look for and what to avoid. The first thing that was apparent to me was the cleanliness of the facility. It was and remains odor free. The staff was and remains very personable and interested in not only my wife but our family. Because my wife, who has aphasia, tends to wander security had to be high on my list of needs and southgate has always provided for that level of care.
During the pandemic we continue to have to deal with, I have been very pleased with the way Administration at the facility has gone above and beyond to continue to provide a safe and secure living environment. We have all had to make sacrifices and southgate has made those as painless as possible.
I am very glad I chose southgate and have to emphasize the friendly and caring atmosphere, the extremely competent management and the cleanliness of the facility. I have to also offer that the meals are well above what one might expect.

They had a physical therapy room, a theater, and open areas where people all hang out. The memory care side had its own dining area, and it’s closed off from the rest of the place.

My father has moved into Delmar Gardens South. It’s been very good. They’ve been pretty quick to react to anything that we bring up, and they’ve helped a lot in getting Medicaid certification completed. They have helped us with the monthly payments until Medicaid is approved. They took good care of my mother until she died, and they’re taking good care of my dad. He’s in an Alzheimer’s ward, and it’s clean, and it’s not overly big, but it’s sufficient. They have other facilities there for him to watch TV in and the dining hall is nice. Everything is pretty nice there. He likes the food and he gets along with the staff well. He’s content there. He’s not receiving full skilled nursing care like my mother did. He can dress himself and feed himself. He’s self-sufficient in a lot of ways, but he’s not in reality anymore. They watch TV. They play cards. They have church services there. It looks very nice, clean and cheerful. They seem to have plenty of staff, but it shocks me how much that kind of care costs.

I was really impressed with the gal or the presenter at Sunrise of Webster Groves. They have a beautiful dog, which is so nice. I know my wife would be very happy with that because my oldest daughter is a veterinarian that has two dogs also. Apparently, they have a cat too at the place.
They have a total dementia unit on the third floor, which I toured and was impressed. They took me to a studio apartment and a one-bedroom apartment. They were both very large with the two closets and a bathroom. Both of them were very, very good units. They had a balcony out on the side with flowers that they were growing. My wife is a gardener so she loves that. They will keep you occupied during the daytime through classes and other stuff, so she won’t just sit in her room. The only drawback was that the price was maybe out of my league.
Everybody I talked to was very outgoing, very friendly, and made you feel good. They really wanted to talk to you. The facility was older though. It’s not a new unit, but it just seems they had upgrades with pictures on the walls. It was a perfect tour, and I would rate them a 5 on everything they got.

I’ve decided to keep my husband at Fairmont on Clayton. It is a lovely facility, and they are now remodeling and replacing the carpets with vinyl flooring. He’s been there long enough now that I feel they’re family. I can stick my head in the door of the executive director and she’s got time to talk to me. I feel there’s a good open-door policy for talking with the local administration. Everybody knows my husband’s name. There’s a nurse there. They’ve got contact with the doctor who comes in regularly one day a week, but he’s on call if something comes up. He has always been there to assist in emergencies. There are maybe about 20 or 25 residents on their floor, but there are always at least 3 to 4 staff members there.
I think they probably do as good a job as they can. They’ve been more than respectful of my wishes. The staff is always available when I need them. When incidents happen, they report them to me. I really can’t ask any more than that. I’m satisfied with everything.
Every afternoon, I see activities going on, like baking cookies and decorating. They’re playing bingo. They do some finger painting. My husband has access to physical therapy and occupational therapy. I’ve eaten some of the meals and the food is always colorful, except for maybe a couple of instances. They serve you a soup, a salad, vegetables, protein, a starch, and then dessert. Everybody likes dessert. I would say the meals are good, and they’re varied.

Kingsland Walk Senior Living was new, very nice, and had all the same amenities and everything. The staff member toured us to the assisted living and memory care, and he was very knowledgeable and very informative. He showed me every bit of the facility and everywhere that the residents could go, and they all looked satisfied living there. So, it was a great tour.
The staff spoke nicely to me. They came up, talked to me, and asked if they could answer any questions. The dining room was very open and friendly, too, and the rooms were really nice. I liked their setup better than the other place I saw. In the double room, you could put up a curtain for your privacy, as compared to other places where you had to walk through one person’s room to get to the other side. It’s just the layout was different, and it was nice.
They had a recreation area where they played cards and games, a couple of different areas with TVs, and little areas where they had that Touch on Touch thing where there’s a baby bed, a baby, and animals as you walk through the floor. There were like two of those areas. They do trips, too, where they take them out once a week. On the memory floor they do more activities, because those people have more of a need in the community.

My mom is at St. Louis Hills Assisted Living and Memory Care. The place is excellent. The staff is very helpful and very caring. They were patient with us and made sure that my mother felt comfortable in her transition. So we were worried about that, but we didn’t have to worry about that with them. They made her feel comfortable and they made us feel comfortable and the workers are happy people. The food is also excellent. We’ve only been there for a couple of weeks, but every time we’ve popped by to visit our mother we never notice any problem. Everything is just like, advertised, you know, a lot of the other places you pop in, they say they got activity and different stuff. And if you pop in, you don’t see it. But at this one, you can pop in any time and see that the seniors are actively doing what they want. If my mother wants to sit in the chair, she sits in the chair, If she wants to do puzzles, they let them do what they want to do. What’s amazing about it is it’s the most affordable facility we looked at. So affordability is good.
