Howell is a township located in Monmouth County that’s home to 53,537 residents. Despite its reputation as a bedroom community for NYC, 13.8% of its residents are aged 65 and older, drawn to its below-average health care costs, exceptionally low crime rates and pleasant climate. There are also 16 parks within the township and plenty of opportunities for seniors to browse its many stores and engage with Howell’s diversity of recreational offerings.
Assisted living is a type of senior care best suited to those finding everyday tasks, such as cooking, more of a struggle, but also determined to hold on to their autonomy. They’re a halfway house between receiving care while being free to continue living semi-independently. Assisted living communities typically include chefs who prepare all meals, housekeeping staff who keep rooms clean and trained staff to manage medications. Some facilities also include laundry services and organize group activities for residents. The average cost for assisted living in Howell is $7,478, which is around $828 per month more than the state average.
The rest of this guide discusses costs in more detail, considers the pros and cons of living in Howell and lists some resources for seniors.

The staff is awesome. They go out of their way to know each resident and what their preferences are. My mom loves them. The facility is beautiful and well maintained. I am most impressed by Amy, the activities director. Throughout Covid, she pulled out all the stops to make sure the residents were entertained. My only complaint, but it’s a big one is the food. It’s practically inedible. The menus read like a five star restaurant, but when the food is so overcooked that you can’t stick a fork in it, what’s the point? Older people need soft food, not shoe-leather meat. The family brings mom food every week to make sure she has something nutritious and edible. For the amount of money this place costs, we should not have to supply food. Mom said the residents complain at every meeting, but nothing ever changes.

Mattison Crossing at Manalapan Avenue was very nice. It’s a lot bigger of a facility than where my dad is. The people were very nice. They sent their bus over to the rehab my dad was in to bring him over. But the guy who drove them wasn’t too thrilled about having to go get them, and he made it known, which I thought was rude. The lady was very nice, and so were the nurses. The dining room was huge, and I think it might be a little bit overwhelming. When you walk in, you look like you’re in a big restaurant. There are a lot more people there. They had a lot of activity. They had a movie theater room, a nice gym, and a big room if the family wanted to get together. It was a nice place. It was a lot older, but they kept it up nicely. They had long hallways. There were elevators because they had different floors. They had studios and a one-bedroom apartment. The two-bedroom apartment was still kind of small. The kitchen area is very tiny. This place had a ledge to get into the bath, so you’d have to step over it.

We visited Wellington Estates at Spring Lake. Everybody seemed very kind, caring, compassionate, and concerned about the resident’s well-being. We saw a room that they had set up as a sample room; it was very nicely decorated. It was in good shape and very pleasant, it would have worked very nicely. The dining area looked very pleasant, they also had a separate area that could be used for special occasions like a little gathering. The grounds were beautifully kept. There was someone doing a jigsaw puzzle and being helped by an aide, and there was another little group of residents either talking or reading together. There was an activity room there, there’s a coffee or snack center, it was a very lovely facility.

We looked at both assisted living and memory care and the lady was very knowledgeable and helpful. They had some amenities, but there weren’t many activities outside, unlike the other ones we visited where they had shuffleboard or putting greens or things like that. They have a salon, though, and it’s very clean. It’s close to where my parents live and they wanted to keep their doctors.

My sister, Liz, has dementia and bipolar disorder. She was only accepted in one place — she is not in good shape — and that is Millennium Memory Care. Sometimes, we get to the facility and the front gate is not locked, which does not give me very good vibes. The staff seems to be quite caring, sometimes. My sister is the highest functioning person there, but she is also very agitated and aggressive at times. Sometimes the staff is pretty annoyed with her. They have activities, and Liz said the food is good. It’s a locked facility with only 16 people there, and most of them are just lying around doing nothing and looking awful. The care is good. There’s a new group that is running the place. It’s very pretty, and the grounds are lovely.

We spent a good amount of time looking for the proper assisted living community for our 98 year old father. After an exhaustive search we chose Leisure Park. Could not have made a better decision. For us, besides the obvious expectation of the physical setting, it came down to the people. Stacey was our first contact. We found Stacey knew the business but what really stood out was her genuine empathy toward our situation and deep knowledge of what we needed to consider without being pushy. The rest of the staff were outstanding too. In the end, to us, it was the level of care and the people that mattered.

Our mother was strong enough to rebound but we lost our Dad. Devastating
especially under the circumstances.
We then decided to bring Mom back to the New Jersey shore area where she still has family and friends. After extensive research we selected Brandywine
Living at Wall.
Mom loves her new apartment and is thriving with the wonderful care she is receiving.
The staff is amazing. Everyone (housekeepers, dining room waitresses, the handyman, Aides, Physical Therapists, the Community Relations Manager and the Executive Director) are very professional and responsive.
Every day there are all kinds of activities to participate in and the meals are terrific. Compliments to the chef!! Small groups of residents can also get off campus
for short excursions with Anthony the Brandywine van driver. Anthony can
also take individuals to doctors’ appointments. (There are also doctors and dentists who visit residents in their apartments.)
Each morning family members receive an email message outlining meal choices and activities available on that day.
My sister and I couldn’t be happier with the Brandywine Community. We can relax
because we know our mother is safe and happy.
I visit every week or so. Let the chef know I’m on my way!

My mother loved The Chelsea at Brick, but when she had a fall, she went downhill as far as being able to do things more for herself. She was able to take care of her bathing herself and things like that. I liked it there as well. She had her friends there. She had her own private room with my dad. They’re so nice. The workers still call her to see how she is. I think that’s very nice that they continue to do that. They’re very compassionate. I have nothing bad to say about The Chelsea at all. They were there for about three years. On a holiday like Labor Day, they would have bands come in, they would have a barbecue for the residents, and they all ate in the dining room together. It seemed like the staff was very friendly and helpful. I remember when my dad passed, it was very hard, and they had so much compassion. They were great. The facility was very nice. They had a little hair salon there and an activity room. They would even take a bus trip to Atlantic City or somewhere. They did things with them and they had their own little library and things of that nature. It was nice for her. I feel bad that she had that fall and it just happened that way. She wanted to continue to stay there, but unfortunately, she couldn’t.

The chef/cooks/workers were amazing. However, my sister died in their care. During Covid, my sister got it and they did not call a parent for 3 days after my sister got it. I had to beg the front desk for them to call. Night before my sister died, they finally called to say she was asymptomatic and the next morning she died. It was horrible communication and being that my sister was non-verbal she should have automatically been sent to a hospital for observation.
