Mount Pleasant is a town in eastern South Carolina surrounded by water. According to the most recent U.S. Census estimates, the town has 91,684 residents, 16% of whom are seniors over the age of 65. The award-winning East Cooper Medical Center and its experienced team of health care professionals are situated near the heart of the city, adjacent to a variety of other health care specialists and hospitals and all within a short driving distance to seniors living throughout the town.
For about $7,330 a month, seniors in Mount Pleasant can obtain a semiprivate room in a nursing home where they can receive 24-hour medical care and assistance with personal hygiene tasks. Many communities also provide on-site access to rehabilitative care professionals such as physical, speech and occupational therapists. For seniors who don’t require the around-the-clock personal care assistance and medical supervision that comes with nursing home care, assisted living or home care may meet their needs, save money and enable seniors to retain more of their independence.
This guide provides a brief overview of the costs of nursing home care in Mount Pleasant and a few of the available resources that can help seniors subsidize care-related expenses.

This facility is well below any reasonable standard that one would expect in elder care. The rooms are shared, small and inadequate with shared bathrooms for 4 Medicaid residents.
Constant staff turnover causes disinterested care that borders on negligence. The food is disgusting – I think prisoners eat better than this – and is served in styrofoam containers in the rooms. Dining facilities are only used for special occasions.
Don’t put any of your older relatives in this place unless you are just looking to warehouse them until they die.

Choosing a long term nursing care facility for a family member is a task most people hope they never face. But after our family member suffered a severe brain injury, we knew she needed around the clock nursing care as well as management of her diabetes. Having volunteered at MPM some years ago, I had an inside view of the love and care the event coordinators and staff had for the residents. And I am grateful that when our need arose, MPM had an opening for our family member. There are not enough words of gratitude from us for the wonderful way that the Gold Wing memory care nursing team takes care of our loved one. And it is a team – – the nurses, the dietitians, the physical therapists, the activities director, the case coordinator, the finance team, and others, headed up by Bruce White, the facilities administrator – – all show a dedication to excellence and personalized care for our loved one. To them our family member is not just a number or a "resident"; she is an individual that is known, cared for and loved. And for that, we thank God. And we thank the wonderful staff-family of Mt. Pleasant Manor.

My father died just as Heartland was being evacuated for Dorian. Of course there was some confusion, we understand that. However, they could not have been more disrespectful and careless in their handling of the situation both during and after. We received no official call of condolences or base information for how to proceed from the institution where he had been for nearly five years (it is now nearly three weeks later). Not one gesture towards us of information from the leaders of this institution regarding how to handle his items, last bill, or information on his care – all communication was initiated by my family to this day, and of course made a difficult time that much more difficult.
Worst was they cleaned out his belongings immediately, without our permission and without even informing us before we got to his room to find it empty (I had sent a message immediately on the day of death to say we were coming to clean it out as soon as they reopened). It was a shock. When we were given his boxed items we found that they had taken our precious family photos off the wall and stuck them together with the scotch tape used to attach them to the wall, ruining them. They also wrote his date of death directly onto one of his items in indelible ink. (see pics) We were deprived of the rite of final handling of his items. Then they used the hurricane as an excuse, this was upon my calling days after the hurricane had passed to solve yet another problem they hadn’t informed us about – all evacuees had returned days prior – they had had plenty of time.
I want to point out that we were paying the full exorbitant price of this institution, not that any patient on medicaid should be treated otherwise, but I cringe to think how Heartland behaves towards the latter. I am disgusted by the lack of care and respect shown and I also find it baffling. We are putting our parents into their care and as one friend said, "it is just bad business" to reveal how much this HCR ManorCare institution actually does not care or think. Now that weeks have gone by and we’ve still had no unforced acknowledgment or apology, I have no choice but to tell the truth via other outlets like this one. Heartland of West Ashley, you made a terrible time even worse than I could have imagined. I suppose you will be asking me to contact your "care line" because you can’t discuss a patient here. Well I’ve called enough times. You call me.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Mount Pleasant, SC
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
