I was in Brookhaven once. As far as I was concerned, the nursing staff was good. They had a lack in their night nurses and what not as far as I know. The rooms looked a little better than the ones here. They were actually a little nicer. It was a smaller facility, but nicer. You had a fan and air conditioning in the room where here you just have the air conditioner. I don’t know if they changed that since I have been there, but that was the way it was. I had a private room, so I wasn’t sharing. Actually, the rooms were a little organized. I liked the doctors there. The food tasted worse than the food here. They gave you juice with your food all the time, and you can choose your own condiment. They don’t put your condiments on your tray, and if you wanted fresh fruit, there was fresh fruit. We had parties, we actually had a Michael Jackson and Elvis impersonator come in, we had a Halloween party, and that I really enjoyed. We had Bingo, and one guy coming in that we had service with. They had one computer that people can go on.

My sister-in-law is having rehabilitation at Peninsula Center right now. I haven’t found any problem with it. The people have been nice. The place is nice and clean. She is not complaining about anything. We felt very comfortable with the place. They’ve been very friendly and helpful. They have games and things that they play, but she’s only been taken out of the room to try and build up her muscle strength to use a wheelchair. The facility is top of the line.

I would not recommend this facility to anyone who cares for a senior. I had my brother last year there and it was not an experience I wish to anyone. The day admitted the room given to him had such a stench unbearable covered with spray, sticky floor. The following week, my brother lost his shoes, nobody could find, finally a cna found them. the patient next to him was wearing them. on the following week i noticed he had his mediation (pills) underneath his bed. I Immediately reported and nobody had notice. The second occasion I fold pills again underneath the bed , took pictures and made a formal complaint. After this experience he was given crushed pills. Since I lived far from Nursing home I was only able to visit my brother twice a week. CNA and nurses were kind but you have to be on your toes for any mishaps. I reported to Social worker if he can be transfered to a room with at least a window but unsuccessful. As time went by I asked for a transfer to a closer place near me but they were hesitant in helping me. My brother as very sick, sensitive and it was painful to see him suffer. cannot continue because it reminds me of other incidents. my brother past away in May 2021. I truly do not recommend this facility to your loved ones.

My wife is not being treated nicely at Rockaway Care Center. Her meals are five hours late all the time. She dropped her phone in the water and I wasn’t told about that until two months later. I left a message yesterday for Alicia, the head of the social workers, but I haven’t received a call back. Yesterday I called and the receptionist hung up on me. They were very rude.
It was a clean building, but it’s pretty disorganized downstairs when you come in. There’s people in wheelchairs bumping into you. They claimed it’s a nursing home, but to me it’s more like a psychiatric place, because they have people talking to themselves, talking to the wall. I brought her flowers and a guy tried to steal it from me, and they’re very rude to her.

Whenever we had a question about mom – her social worker was always able to help and get us in touch with the right person. Again Thank you thank you! I came to Highfield Garden Care Center after a long hospital stay. I had fallen in my apartment and was stuck there for a couple of days. Needless to say, I was pretty out of condition when I got to Highfield Gardens. The cracker-jack physical therapy team helped and pushed me; I am walking out of here today.
Although I am happy to be going home and back to work. There are things about Highfield Gardens that I may miss. Most everyone I met was genuinely kind. The nurses were helpful and capable, the aids friendly and attentive, my room was pretty nice and even the food was good.
I will certainly try to be more careful, but should I ever have to go back to a care facility, I will go back to Highfield Gardens.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Far Rockaway, NY
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.

Aging specialists at the New York Department for the Aging work with a network of care providers and other services providers to improve the quality of life and level of independence in aging generations. From assessing personal care needs to applying for long-term care, seniors can find educational and recreational programs at local senior centers operated by the Department for the Aging. The agency also has programs that can help delay nursing home placement and allow seniors to age-in-place at home.
With the option of searching by location or category, seniors and their caregivers can find local and state-wide services online or by speaking with a representative over the phone. Programs, such as HEAP, can assist seniors with paying utilities and managing other basic needs. NY Connects also offers information regarding hospitals and nursing homes.
Acting on behalf of residents of long-term care facilities and their loved ones, ombudsmen investigate complaints ranging from lack of quality care to financial abuse. NY’s HIICAP provides free and confidential health insurance counseling to Medicare beneficiaries. In addition to explaining Medicare bills and statements, counselors can help seniors better understand their coverage options, including Medigap and Medicare Advantage. For eligible individuals, counselors can help seniors apply for financial aid to cover out-of-pocket costs for prescriptions that aren’t covered by Part D. Contact the NYC Department for the Aging to find a local HIICAP counselor or schedule a Medicare presentation.
