Oxford is a community of about 23,000 people, over 13% of whom are aged 65 and over, in the Detroit metro region. The region offers numerous hospitals and a high number of doctors and specialists, providing easy access to care for older adults. The city has a low crime rate and access to public transportation services, which may make it a good option for assisted living.
Assisted living facilities provide residential care for older adults who don’t need extensive medical support but require assistance with daily living activities. These facilities provide daily meals, local transportation services, housekeeping and maintenance and recreational programs, supporting residents’ comfort and quality of life. The Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey indicates that assisted living residents in the Oxford region pay $4,750 per month for care, which is higher than state and national averages.
This guide provides an overview of the benefits and drawbacks of living in Oxford. It also compares assisted living rates to fees in nearby cities, as well as other types of care in Oxford, and highlights local resources for seniors.

I really enjoyed touring The Avalon of Auburn Hills. The tour guide was very accommodating in answering all of my questions and explaining everything about their facility. It was very updated, clean, and lovely. Every room has access to a number of windows to bring in natural light. All of the staff seemed to really interact well with one another.
It had an art room, game rooms, and printed out puzzles that were put down so you can go by and get some of those puzzles to stimulate your brain. They have a lot of activities every week for the residents, and they also incorporate the families once a month into the activities. There’s a variety of room sizes. It offered a two-bedroom room that was quite spacious.

I know someone whose father is living there, and she said the food is really excellent. We didn’t eat any ourselves, but I know the chef, and he’s a wonderful chef. I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews about the food. The people we met were just very lovely, caring, informative, and very impressive.

They had people sharing rooms, like two people in a room. It was a three story building, they had an elevator going up and two floors had the patients’ rooms and a nurses’ station. The top floor was like a recreational room where you can play cards. You could talk to the residents there and they seem to be enjoying games. The patients are enjoying each other’s company. The staff there were very, very nice. They had a church service going on when I was there and it seemed like there’s a nice community feeling. If there’s something that a potential resident likes to do, they make sure they would have activities in their interest. They seem like they’re really engaging the people and getting them involved in things. I would recommend this to others.

I had my mom at The Pines of Goodrich for about four months. It’s good for anybody looking for a place for their parents or relatives. They treated us well there. She had a private room there and she was never able to go out, but they have a dining room and then a porch outside. We could take her out there. She never really felt good enough to enjoy the rest of the people, but they were good to her there.
They had one building that was just for people that kind of needed help or maybe just try to get a little stronger to go home. The other building had memory care for people that might be suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s. They were very helpful, and we had hospice come in and help because mom just wasn’t able to get stronger.
They were good to us and her. The rooms were nice. They had just gotten new carpeting when we moved her in there. They were very clean and they always took care of her. They had a living room where they had a big TV if you wanted to go out and watch. They had people doing puzzles. They were clean and they always made good food for her. She would push the button for help and they would be right in there to help her with whatever she needed.
Everybody that was in there was wonderful. They always kept my mom’s room clean and her clean. Everything was always nice. The staff was always very nice. They would come in and talk to us and let us know how she was doing or if we had any questions, they were always willing to talk to us. Compared to all the other pricing, they were probably right there because she needed probably the most care that anybody could have. They were always there to help her. There was never any time when they just ignored her or didn’t help her with her needs.

My mother has been there for a few months,I live in Arizona and its hard for me to visit as much as Id like too,But my daughter sees her when she can. The people at scenic manor do everything they can to make sure she’s well taken care of ,And for that Im so grateful! I feel so guilty because I can’t take her, but I know I could never do for her the things they can.I tried but I couldn’t watch her daily and work too! My mother is so stubborn with me,And I couldn’t get her to take her meds.I don’t know what it is about but she’s as good as gold with them. It takes the heartache and worry away I used to feel, and I know she’s being well cared for! Altsheimers is a terrible decease! I know she feels depressed and its the saddest thing in the world to see someone you love slip away. I pray every day for a cure! I don’t think it will come in time to help my mother,But I pray they will come up with the answer in time to help others! Im so grateful to the people at scenic hill manor for being so kind and helpful to my mother,It was a nightmare trying to figure out what I could do for her so that she wouldn’t hurt herself or go walking and forget where she lived! Now at least I am comforted knowing she is in good hands,And its a very nice place ! I had heard so many horror storys about people putting their parent in a rest home only to find their parent being abused and neglected,Scenic hill manor is the safest place I could have ever found for my mother! And I truly recommend it for any ones parent that has the problems my mother has.I know I sound like a commercial but Im being honest. Its not the cheapest place in the world which is why I can’t visit very often because I can’t afford to miss work,Im the only one she has to pay for it! I get no help from my two brothers its all on my shoulders! But I’ll make it! God willing at least I know I’m doing my best for her!

They do have some private rooms, but the majority of them have two people in each room. They have different living rooms that have TV, a giant piano — and someone comes and plays with it — and then the dining area and a nice little kitchen. They do have some rooms upstairs, which is the only thing I don’t like because my mom is upstairs, but they did put a lift chair in. They’re on a very nice piece of property with sheep and chickens. It’s beautiful, but there are a lot of patients there with Alzheimer’s, and they need more to do. They have people come in, and they do a few activities, but there should be more.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Oxford
Assisted living facilities in Oxford and throughout Michigan are monitored by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. While these facilities aren’t licensed, they may be required to obtain licensing if they provide specialized programs.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Oxford
- Oxford may be a good option for older adults managing chronic conditions. It has approximately 454 doctors per 100,000 people, over double the national rate, which may make it easy to schedule appointments with primary care providers and specialists. The closest major medical facility is Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital, a fully accredited 224-bed teaching hospital that specializes in cardiac care.
- Year-round high temperatures in Oxford range from 30 to 82 degrees, which is average for Michigan as a whole. The region gets about 33 inches of rain and 37 inches of snow annually. While this may be a consideration for those who rely on mobility aids, many assisted living facilities provide transportation services year-round to help residents attend errands and medical appointments.
- Crime is very uncommon in Oxford and may make the community a good option for those seeking a safe, close-knit environment. According to most recent data, violent crime occurs at a rate of 72 incidents per 100,000 people versus respective state and national rates of 437 and 379. The property crime rate is 421, which is similarly lower than the state average of 1,585 and the national rate of 2,110.
- While Michigan tends to be a budget-friendly state to live in, Oxford’s overall cost of living exceeds state and national averages. Altogether, living expenses come in about 10% higher than the nation as a whole and 20% higher than the state average. This is primarily due to the high cost of housing, an expense that older adults may avoid by living in a residential care facility.
- The North Oakland Transportation Authority provides public transportation in Oxford and the surrounding region. NOTA provides demand-response service on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Services should be scheduled in advance, but emergency services for medication pick-ups for those aged 60 and over may be available.
- Seniors in Oxford don’t pay state income taxes on Social Security benefits. While Michigan imposes income taxes on other types of retirement income, older adults can claim large deductions to decrease the amount they owe.
Paying for Assisted Living in Oxford
Assisted living facilities in Oxford charge $4,750 per month for services, making the region a relatively expensive option for those seeking this level of care. By comparison, the state median cost for assisted living is $4,200, and nationally, it’s slightly higher at $4,300.
The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities
Seniors in Oxford pay $4,750 per month for assisted living. While this exceeds state and national averages, Oxford is an affordable alternative to Monroe, where facilities charge $5,100 per month, and Lansing, which has some of the highest assisted living rates in the state at $5,225. Jackson and Muskegon are comparatively affordable for this type of care, with respective fees coming in at $3,650 and $3,500.
The Cost of Other Types of Senior Care
Older adults have several care options to choose from depending on their budgets and living preferences. Compared to other types of senior care, assisted living is moderately priced at $4,750. Homemaker services, which include personal care, housekeeping and companionship in the individual’s home, are slightly more expensive at $4,767 per month. Home health aides also provide some skilled nursing services and charge $4,957. Nursing homes provide a more intensive level of care than assisted living and are costlier at $8,821 for shared rooms and $10,646 for private rooms. Adult day health care is the most cost-effective option at $1,733 monthly.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Oxford
The State of Michigan provides several options to help pay for adult foster care or assisted living facilities in the Oxford area. Among these are the Expanded Community Living Supports Program (ECLS), The MI Choice (MIC) program and MI Health Link. These are all Medicaid and/or Medicare waiver programs and subject to availability.
