Essex is a small unincorporated community just 19 minutes from downtown Baltimore. The city has a population of just over 40,500, with 15% ages 65 and older. With a low cost of living and tax breaks for retirees, the city is an option for seniors looking for an affordable place for assisted living. There are also four distinctive seasons for seniors who enjoy the outdoors.
Assisted living communities provide housing for seniors who need customized levels of medical and personal care. These types of adult living facilities have different types of living spaces, including apartments, individual rooms, homes and shared living quarters. This home-like atmosphere encourages seniors to remain independent for as long as possible. Assisted living communities in Essex cost an average of $5,000 per month, which is comparable to the state average but is slightly more than the national average.
This guide describes assisted living in Essex and provides an overview of the costs of assisted living throughout the state. The guide also covers the other types of care available and a list of free and low-cost resources to seniors in the area.

We did both a virtual and an in-person tour of Morningside House of Satyr Hill. My mom and I were both much more impressed with that one than the other facility we looked at. She likes to sit outside, she enjoys that, and they had a nice area to sit and walk outside. They were far enough away too so it would be very safe for people with walkers to do that. That was something we were impressed by. They took us through both assisted living and memory care.

We chose it for my sister. We liked the people there, the atmosphere, the pricing, and we worked with them to make it affordable. It was just the actual place and the people more than anything else that made us choose it. We’re getting a studio, and it’s large enough to have a bed, a sofa, a kitchenette, and a bathroom. We tasted the food, everything was good, and delicious. It was not super high-end, but it was fine.

I liked Lighthouse Senior Living at Hopkins Creek, I thought it was very nice and pleasant. The marketing director gave me a wonderful tour. It seemed a lot bigger to me than it looked from the outside. I liked that they had a couple of different rooms, different types, and styles of rooms. I like this facility better than the other one I toured, but it’s just relative. I thought it has more open spaces in the building itself, and the furnishings were more set up for and conducive for people to gather as a community there, and talk and chat. It’s very clean, very excellent and set up better to me than the other place. It’s funny because I read their reviews online, and I wasn’t as impressed with one of the bad reviews, but I decided to keep an open mind and I like the Lighthouse better. The staff was introduced to me as we went, and a couple of nurses and a couple of other people like the activities director. The activities were listed, there were numerous activities that I could be involved in. It just seemed like it was a more active community.

Chemell and her staff have provided quality, professional care to my Uncle who suffers from multiple major health challenges. Chemell runs her facility with professionalism, empathy, compassion and attentiveness to the needs of the patients/residents that reside there. I’ve witnessed this first hand, as I’ve conducted weekly visits (often unannounced) to her facility to check on my Uncle. When I initially began my extensive search to find the right long-term care assisted living for my Uncle, I was referred to Chemell’s facility. I took a tour, met Chemell and her staff and I was convinced that this was the right place for my Uncle. The facility was clean, beautifully decorated and just felt like “home.” I knew this was the place for him. Fast forward several months, and Chemell hasn’t proved me wrong; as a matter of fact, she has exceeded my expectations. My Uncle is happy, healthy, and being cared for with love. I highly recommend God’s Way Assisted Living to anyone searching for a place that their loved ones in need of care can call home and genuinely be taken care of and treated like FAMILY!

It’s close to the bathroom. They have a bathroom on the first floor.

Kind Heart Assisted Living was very pleasant. It’s a nice location, it’s clean, and very satisfactory as an assisted living place. The owner works full time as a nurse, and he’s started this up on his own. He’s very professional and very outgoing, and very concerned for his residents. He and his wife alternate on weekends, while the other lady is there full time during the week, so there’s always somebody there for them. The rooms were on the smaller side, but they’re clean, pleasant, and everything’s newly painted and updated.
The first floor is like one big large space. One corner had the dining table near the window, which was bright and sunny, and there was a big TV and a comfortable couch, then the kitchen was part of that room in the other corner. It was a big and very modern looking kitchen with a huge freezer and new refrigerator.
The whole place looked new inside. The building itself was older, but nowhere near as old as the ones near it. They have a calendar of activities where they can have games on different nights, or they can just watch TV. I could highly recommend it for someone who needs some assisted living.

They were very clean, the rooms were very clean, and just upon entering the home, it was clean. It was a nice atmosphere, though I can’t gauge anything because I didn’t see any residents there. I didn’t see any food cooking. She told me that they had a place where they had fresh fruit all the time, and she showed me everything, and she was very open with her tour. I like what she said about how they assist the residents, no matter what, even if they are a little independent. I just didn’t like the steps, they were kind of steep.

My mom will be moving into Locust Lodge II. I like the price because she’s having an OK income, but it just doesn’t qualify for that high end stuff. Everything seems to be starting at $6,000 a month, but with them, the room I was looking at is starting at $3,400 a month, so that’s great. Not only can she afford it, but she can actually save a little bit, which she is going to need down the other end as she gets older. The other most convenient thing was it was ten minutes up the street. It is an inexpensive place. She has a room now and it’s on the ground floor. She doesnt have to negotiate stairs and she’s got a private bathroom.
The staff was very outgoing and accommodating. I really appreciate her efforts, because I was supposed to get my mom up there sooner. So, I had to tell the lady at Locust Lodge, and I had already given her a $500 deposit check. I figured that’s gone, I called her and said, "Sorry, it’s fallen through. Everything’s on hold. Mom doesn’t want to come up yet." She called me back and said, "Look, we still got your check when it’s time for your mom to come up here. We’ll use that just to hold the room for you, and then you just pay for the remainder of whatever’s left on that month." That was fantastic, and she said, "If we can’t get you in Locust Lodge, I got a place and I probably have room in Catonsville or something up in Pikesville." So, I’m like, "Oh, please, not Pikesville." But she said, "Nope, we’re good. We can put you in this lodge."
I have not tried the food, but she did show me the menu. The problem is, my mom’s gluten intolerant, so it’s kind of going to be on me to make sure that she gets her bread and rolls, because that’s a little over and above what they would do. The facility is not going to be top of the line because they’re relatively inexpensive, and I understand that it’s not the Ritz Carlton.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Essex
Assisted living in Maryland is regulated by the Office of Health Care Quality, which is a division of the Maryland Department of Health. These regulations cover everything from the levels of care to staffing.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Essex
- Essex is an affordable city in Maryland with a cost of living that is lower than the national average and the state average. Seniors can expect to pay less than the national average for groceries and healthcare.
- Summers in Essex are hot with July highs around 89 degrees, but with 210 sunny days per year, Essex provides plenty of opportunities for exploring the outdoors. The city gets around 15 inches of snow each year, which is ideal for seniors who appreciate colder temperatures as well.
- Seniors living in Essex can keep more of their money in comparison to other states because Maryland is moderately tax-friendly towards retirees. The state doesn’t tax social security income and withdrawals from retirement accounts are only partially taxed. Public pension is also only partially taxed.
- Seniors who need transportation services in Essex can use Connect-A-Ride (CAR) for medical appointments, errands and other outings. The service links seniors with public, private and volunteer services. It is funded by the Montgomery County Government and is available Monday through Friday.
- For illness and injury, there are several hospitals in the Essex area. These facilities include MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and the Baltimore Medical System.
Paying for Assisted Living in Essex
At $5,000 per month, assisted living in Essex is the same as the state average. It’s $700 more than the national average of $4,300.
The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities
According to Genworth’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey, the average monthly cost of assisted living in Cumberland is $4,665 per month and in Hagerstown, seniors pay around $4,500, $500 less than Essex. Salisbury is one of the more expensive cities for assisted living at $5,500 per month — $500 more than Essex.
The Cost of Other Types of Senior Care
Assisted living is just one type of long-term care option for seniors in Essex. Adult day health is the least expensive option, at $1,896, for seniors who need supervision during the day. Homemaker services at $4,671 and home health care at $4,957 are ideal for those who prefer to age in place. A nursing home is the most expensive option for those who need round-the-clock care. A semiprivate room costs around $11,984 per month and a private room costs around $12,805.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Essex
Seniors in Maryland who are eligible for Social Security payments, or would be except for their income, may be able to access financial assistance through the Optional State Supplement (OSS). Residents of small assisted living facilities may also be able to get help from the state’s Senior Assisted Living Group Home Subsidy.
Learn more about these programs, plus who’s eligible, on our Assisted Living in Maryland page.
More Ways to Pay for Assisted Living
While many families use their own funds or personal assets to pay for assisted living, there are plenty of additional options to cover these costs. Some additional ways to finance assisted living costs include:
- Veterans Benefits
- Life Insurance Policy
- Long-Term Care Insurance
- Reverse Mortgage
