Cincinnati, located on the Ohio River, is the seat of Hamilton County. It has a population of 303,940, and approximately 37,000 of its residents are senior citizens. The city runs many initiatives to improve the quality of life of its older residents, including the Creative Aging Cincinnati program and the Elder Services Program Advisory Council. The Christ Hospital Network offers a comprehensive set of specialist services for seniors.
Some older adults find themselves requiring a high level of medical care that’s impractical to receive at home. In those instances, nursing home care could be advisable since living in a nursing facility makes it easier to receive around-the-clock attention. The average cost of a semiprivate room in a nursing home in Cincinnati is $8,152 per month. This is $1,004 more than the statewide average and $396 more than the national average. Seniors who are mobile and in generally good health but require some support to live independently may find assisted living or home care to be more affordable and suited to their lifestyles.
In this guide, we look at the cost of nursing home care as well as some free resources available to support older Ohio residents.

Been very disappointed with numerous things with Hillebrand. The lacking of staffing I am sure they pay sub-par wages, which doesn’t get the best help. My loved one has been there a little over a month. The things my family has seen and I have seen has been very disappointing. The icing on the cake is when someone at the facility stole my uncles ring off his swollen ring finger. They either cut it off or took off with force. Very, very, disappointing from a facility you pay $13,000 to take good care of your loved one and have high hope for good care.

I was in the nursing facility for short term rehab post-joint replacement surgery. The facilities are modern and attractive, although rooms are very small. There is inadequate nursing staff to handle the case load. This is particularly severe evenings, nights, and weekends. Calls for assistance could take 45 minutes to answer at night. There were language barriers with night nurses. The only doctor was extremely brusque and rude.; he visited on day 3 for 5 minutes. The food was not healthful; it was greasy comfort food, Jello, and canned fruit. I could tolerate most of these things. What I could not tolerate was receiving wrong medications, not receiving the right medications, and resentment that I noticed. I feel sorry for the nurses because of the severe nurse understaffing and their heavy workload. My discharge planning was not conducted competently and I was given misinformation, including that it would take two days to process the paperwork to leave. The day nurse was not invited to my care conference (a brief meeting where everyone is supposed to get on the same page and answer my questions) because of staff infighting between social worker and nurse. I was not given the balance of my medications upon discharge and my departure was then delayed 2 hours while they got the undispensed prescribed meds together for me. I did receive excellent PT and OT. My poor review is because the inability to dispense the right medications and not dispense the wrong medications and keep to an semblance of the dispensing schedule. I was cognizant enough to notice; unfortunately many residents were not. The dispensing records are all hand written in paper logs; nothing is scanned or automated, and these procedures were very inefficient for the nurses.

My mom is in Brookwood Retirement Community. She fell and broke her wrists and her clavicle, and she was in rehab for 21 days. Now she’s in long-term care. They don’t have a memory care unit, but all the patients on this floor do have memory issues.
She doesn’t know where she is, but I’d say it’s pretty good. She has to be fed because her right wrist is broken and she’s right-handed. But she seems happy. I think they’re pretty good. They answer my questions. My mom is in bed all the time, but she does get kind of rambunctious. I told the one nurse yesterday that my mom is pretty spry to be 94 years old. She will get in the wheelchair and shuffle all over the place. She will get up and try to walk into other people’s rooms. She has a roommate, and she went and got in her bed because she did not want to get up.
There are two in the room. I didn’t want her in a private room because it costs more. It’s very plain. They have beds, TVs, and then nothing on the walls. They have a curtain, too. She’s by a window, but all she sees is part of the building. If she sits up, then she can see out the window.
When they moved her from rehab to long-term, I walked in after they had moved her upstairs and her breakfast is sitting there and it was cold. I talked to the nurse and the nurse did not know that she needed to be fed. So, I fed her what she would eat. And after that, they started feeding her.
They will take them down to the common room for bingo. But she doesn’t know what was going on. So, she’d picked up the card and she’ll be like, "I guess I better put this back in." She doesn’t know how to do anything anymore. They do get them out of the room and try to do stuff with them, whether they do it or not.
I don’t see the staff that often, and I have to hunt them down when I want to ask them a question. But there’s more than one patient, so I understand that they’re busy.
I haven’t smelled any funky smells or anything.

They do a really nice job with the activities for the residents and keeping the families updated on the status of their residents. My dad fell once, so and they immediately called my sister who lives there locally. They told her what happened. They continued to monitor him after that. The level of care seems to be very, very good. They pay attention to things. They also have things like a beauty salon, a barbershop, nail salon, physical therapy on site, transportation, and a lot more. It’s really nice.

It’s wide open, it’s always clean, and the staff is wonderful. They’re very, very pleasant. They always say hi and ask if we need anything, which is very nice. Years ago, you could tell when you were in a nursing home because of the smell, but you didn’t notice that at Aventura at West Park. It’s very clean and it’s kept very nice. I like it.
I go there about every couple of weeks or so, and I’ve never had any problems whatsoever. It’s always a very pleasant visit. The staff seems very on the ball. Whenever I see them, they’re not walking around and staring at their phones, which I’ve seen in other places. But they are very diligent. With regards to food, my mother’s friend mentioned the food is not always hot when she gets it, but they’re grossly understaffed from what I understand. But the ones that are there are very efficient, and I don’t see any of them just doing nothing. They’re always busy doing chores or whatever it is that they do in the hallways. I think they’ve got a beautiful staff. There is a place where you can sit outside. There are seats and benches out along the front, which is nice. They have bingo, TVs, and beautiful community rooms. I didn’t try the food, but he was pleased with it because he commented on that also. His room was a nice size, it was decorated nicely, and it was very clean.

Care is very very poor overall. My mother needed a breathing treatment she called the nurse but no one responded so after 20 minutes she had to finally call the front desk to get some help!! In addition the rooms are not kept clean! They do her laundry and it looks like it laid in the dryer for hours most of her clothes are so wrinkled I need to often iron them for her to look nice! The food is also a disappointment she seldom gets fresh fruit when she orders each time it’s an option. One good thing she gets fabulous care from the therapy department they go over and beyond to help my Mom!! This had been extremely disappointing as Mom loved when she lived in independent living but each change we have made to assisted living, rehab and now long term care has cause us to question if this was such a good choice. If I could change things I would of kept her in independent living and hired full time care by an agency!

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Cincinnati, OH
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
