Fishers is a city in Hamilton County, Indiana, where nearly a tenth of its 100,000 residents are aged 65 and older. The city’s minimal crime rates and affordable cost of medical treatments make it a good option for senior living. Several hospitals provide health care in the city, including Ascension St. Vincent Fishers and IU Health Saxony Hospital. At an average monthly rate of $7,057, Fishers is one of the most cost-effective cities in the state for nursing home care.
Nursing homes, also called skilled nursing facilities, are a form of institutionalized care for frail older adults who need 24/7 supervision. Seniors in nursing homes are either receiving long-term care or recovering after hospitalization. Facilities are staffed with skilled nurses who provide medical monitoring and trained staff to assist with activities of daily living. For older adults who are mostly independent, assisted living residential care or home care may be more appropriate.
This guide provides a nursing home price comparison between Fishers and other cities in the state. We’ve also listed a number of agencies that help seniors in the area.

My mom has only been in Hamilton Trace for a little while now, but so far I’m happy with it. They’ve been very, very accommodating. She had to go there for rehab, and then they got us an apartment. She can also transition to assisted living when she needs it. They’ve been really, really helpful, very communicable to us, and it’s been a good experience through the process of all of it. The rooms are very nice and clean. They have a puzzle room, a game room, and a movie room. They have exercise, mass and church services. They have a nice dining room, they have a bus that takes them some places, and activities. They have games that they can play, and they have hairdressing. Right now, she is in independent living. She has been there for rehab three times, and we plan on moving her to assisted living as needed. The food is good; it’s great. I’ve eaten with her three times in two weeks. It’s too big a portion. Activities are a five and the yoga is unbelievable. The value for the money is fine; it’s really good.

Our experience with Harbour Manor & The Lodge was very unpleasant. The staff neglected mom. They kept turning off her oxygen generator when she needed to breathe. They forgot to feed her on at least one occasion. They also forgot to give her medicine, and on at least one occasion, we witnessed them giving her the wrong medicine. They never bathed her the entire time she was there. They said they were going on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but they didn’t. Finally, on the last day she was there, someone showered her.
Their community was all on one floor. The rooms were large. They were just a little dated. The furniture layout was pretty good and convenient for the resident. The rooms had a refrigerator, a microwave, and a really large bathroom, but they were not taking their residents down to the dining facility. Everybody ate in their rooms and the food was always cold and you had no choice in the food. It was subpar and it was very expensive. They would arrange for an oxygen generator for you (so I’ll give them points for that) and they had a festival once when we were there, but mom just couldn’t participate in it.
Their staff was all staffed by temporary agencies. So, she rarely had them more than once. They didn’t know or they didn’t care about her and they treated her that way. I would have given them a zero if I could.

The Center’s management is excellent, above reproach, and always available if you have anything to discuss. All matters have been handled in a very professional way and ALWAYS in the best interest of the resident. To sum up…I truly couldn’t be happier with the care and camarderie receives at McGivney Health Care Center

Cottages of Carmel is located in beautiful downtown Carmel. This facility is top notch cleanly, and offers its residents a fully catered meal three times a day. With lots of activities planned daily to keep residents entertained, Cottages of Carmel goes above and beyond to make residents stay comfortable. The key sticking point for me though was the ease of accessibility for my wheelchair bound friend. All the areas in the facility are handicap accessible and all the door throughout the main parts of the building are controlled by push button openers. Without even having to go and look to find a nurse, my friend was constantly being helped and pushed around the facility by some of their nice nurses who seemed to care for my friend as if he were their own. The one drawback to this facility is I do feel their upper management is very business based and I have seen attempted cost cutting measures around their building that are not necessarily best for their residents. No offense, but 1 ply non-soft toilet paper standard in all rooms can not be very pleasant in specific situations.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Fishers, IN
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
Free Resources for Seniors in Fishers, IN
Finding the right resources when thinking about long-term care options can be challenging. These nonprofits can assist seniors in Fishers who are current nursing home residents or considering moving into a facility.
(317) 803-6131 or (800) 432-2422
The local Aging and Disability Resource Center helps seniors plan for their long-term care by connecting them with suitable services. Older adults can get in touch with the ADRC for options counseling, benefits advice and help locating appropriate nursing home care. This is the first point of contact between seniors, their caregivers and available services in the area.
The long-term care ombudsman safeguards nursing home residents by investigating complaints and advocating on their behalf. Seniors and their family members can contact the state ombudsman to learn more about their federal and state rights as residents and report concerns about the level of care they’re receiving.
Indiana’s Department of Insurance offers free one-to-one counseling for seniors who need help navigating the complex Medicare system. In addition to helping older adults explore their options on topics such as Medicare, Medigap and long-term care insurance, SHIP counselors can help callers file claims and appeals.
This program is delivered by the Indiana Legal Services nonprofit in partnership with the Area Agency on Aging. Low-income seniors can benefit from free legal advice and limited services on relevant topics, including public benefits, estate planning and consumer law. The Senior Law Project also provides ombudsman services for skilled nursing facility residents.
Former members of the U.S. military and their dependents can get advice and help claiming pensions and VA benefits they’re entitled to by contacting the county’s Veterans Services office. Seniors might be eligible for VA life insurance, health care and military pensions.
