Carmel is an award-winning city that is home to a large number of older adults: Seniors 65 years of age and older make up 13.3% of the city’s 101,068 residents. They can access care at medical facilities such as Ascension St. Vincent Carmel and the IU Health North Hospital, both of which are capable of cancer and orthopedic care, among other specialties. For a semiprivate room in a nursing home, on a monthly basis, the average Carmel senior pays a bit less ($7,209) than does the average American ($7,756), according to the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey.
Nursing homes provide a level of aid that is unsurpassed outside of hospital settings. Typically, help is available around the clock, and skilled care comes from registered nurses. Doctors regularly check in on patients. That means nursing homes usually cost more than home health care or assisted living. Those choices may be better for seniors able to go about their days without advanced levels of monitoring and assistance.
The topics of this guide are the cost of various senior care arrangements and the ways certain Carmel-area organizations support the city’s seniors.

I have no idea why Medicaire has given this wonderful center such low marks. My Dad has been at McGivney for over 2 years after having been at 3 others in the Indianapolis area. In my opinion, there is just no better place for my father to be. All the staff is wonderful–and the ones who have not been, are no longer there. The Center’s management is excellent, above reproach, and always available if you have anything to discuss. All matters have been handled in a very professional way and ALWAYS in the best interest of the resident. To sum up…I truly couldn’t be happier with the care and camarderie receives at McGivney Health Care Center

Cottages of Carmel is located in beautiful downtown Carmel. This facility is top notch cleanly, and offers its residents a fully catered meal three times a day. With lots of activities planned daily to keep residents entertained, Cottages of Carmel goes above and beyond to make residents stay comfortable. The key sticking point for me though was the ease of accessibility for my wheelchair bound friend. All the areas in the facility are handicap accessible and all the door throughout the main parts of the building are controlled by push button openers. Without even having to go and look to find a nurse, my friend was constantly being helped and pushed around the facility by some of their nice nurses who seemed to care for my friend as if he were their own. The one drawback to this facility is I do feel their upper management is very business based and I have seen attempted cost cutting measures around their building that are not necessarily best for their residents. No offense, but 1 ply non-soft toilet paper standard in all rooms can not be very pleasant in specific situations.

My mom has only been in Hamilton Trace for a little while now, but so far I’m happy with it. They’ve been very, very accommodating. She had to go there for rehab, and then they got us an apartment. She can also transition to assisted living when she needs it. They’ve been really, really helpful, very communicable to us, and it’s been a good experience through the process of all of it. The rooms are very nice and clean. They have a puzzle room, a game room, and a movie room. They have exercise, mass and church services. They have a nice dining room, they have a bus that takes them some places, and activities. They have games that they can play, and they have hairdressing. Right now, she is in independent living. She has been there for rehab three times, and we plan on moving her to assisted living as needed. The food is good; it’s great. I’ve eaten with her three times in two weeks. It’s too big a portion. Activities are a five and the yoga is unbelievable. The value for the money is fine; it’s really good.

Our experience with Harbour Manor & The Lodge was very unpleasant. The staff neglected mom. They kept turning off her oxygen generator when she needed to breathe. They forgot to feed her on at least one occasion. They also forgot to give her medicine, and on at least one occasion, we witnessed them giving her the wrong medicine. They never bathed her the entire time she was there. They said they were going on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but they didn’t. Finally, on the last day she was there, someone showered her.
Their community was all on one floor. The rooms were large. They were just a little dated. The furniture layout was pretty good and convenient for the resident. The rooms had a refrigerator, a microwave, and a really large bathroom, but they were not taking their residents down to the dining facility. Everybody ate in their rooms and the food was always cold and you had no choice in the food. It was subpar and it was very expensive. They would arrange for an oxygen generator for you (so I’ll give them points for that) and they had a festival once when we were there, but mom just couldn’t participate in it.
Their staff was all staffed by temporary agencies. So, she rarely had them more than once. They didn’t know or they didn’t care about her and they treated her that way. I would have given them a zero if I could.

Golden Living Center Willow Springs has single rooms and they also have double rooms. The facility was very clean, it was a nice facility. It was an older property, but it was well-maintained, and they had an outdoor area where the residents can get some sunshine, but it’s very small. Overall, the aesthetics of it is very nice. It’s almost in an industrial area or retail setting, so it’s not in an open area whatsoever, and that was kind of a turn off too. The guy who’s in charge of the place toured us around. He’s only been there a year, but prior to him was when they had the problem with someone walking away from the property. I only met two staff members and they were very nice.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Carmel, Indiana
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
