"We like everything about Independence Village of Plymouth. We looked at about 10 places. I knew the minute we walked in, within 15 minutes, that was the place for mom. Everybody was smiling. Everybody was friendly. They kept the seniors busy.
I love it. My mom is well cared for. In fact, the first weekend that she was there, the refrigerator didn't work. We called them and within 24 hours she had a brand new refrigerator in there. She calls maintenance, like the sink handle broke, they were there the next day with a new one. There's something to do all day long. One time I forgot to check my mom out for dinner and that's when they take attendance. She was with us and my brother got a call. They were asking if they could go in the room and do a wellness check and my brother said she's with us. That's how efficient they are.
My mom did fall there at her own fault. All the people that worked there called. The EMS was right there within 15 minutes and got her to the hospital. I can really rest at night knowing my mom is in good hands. The other thing that's most important is my mom loves it there. She wants me to move there. I recommended it to everybody. In fact, a friends of ours, they relocated their mother there because she was up in age and couldn't live by herself.
Her apartment is nicer than my first apartment when I got married. It's spacious. You walk into the door, the kitchen is off to the right. The only thing they don't have in there is a dishwasher. They don't want them staying in there. They want them to come down and have dinner, breakfast, whatever their meal program is, to socialize. The kitchen is a full kitchen, and it has a sink, stove, and a nice size refrigerator. You have to supply the microwave, but they want a counter microwave, not above, so people don't put hot coffee and spill it. She's got a little table and chairs in her kitchen. In her living room, she has a sofa, a chair, a coffee table, two end tables, a grandfather clock, a TV, a TV stand, and another table, so it's very spacious. She's got a king size bed, a dresser, a chest of drawers, a nightstand, a quilt, a walk-in closet, a linen closet, and a food pantry.
Her bathroom has a walk-in shower with safety handles and a chair to sit in, to shower. It's a full-sized bathroom and in the bedroom, if we choose to have it, there's a cord to pull and the emergency will get right up there. There's one in the bathroom to pull, like in the hospital. There's a double wide closet in the front for coats and stuff and outside, she's got a shelf that you can decorate and put whatever for each season. The building never smells. They're cleaning the carpet once a month in the hallways. I like it.
My mom also has a balcony with two chairs, a table, and plants. She gets to see the kids going off the school bus and stuff like that. She chose the front view. The back view is a park that you look at. When you walk in the main lobby, there's a big place in there with birds. There's a TV and a record player going. There's something's going all day long. There are people always there. It's not empty. If you go down the hallway, they have big murals on the wall that people sit in their wheelchairs or walker and they paint and they color. There's the crafts room and you do knitting and crocheting. There's a beauty salon. My mom loves bingo. The first time she went, she won $5. She keeps the same cards because they're her lucky cards. They have a breakfast nook. They always have snacks in the afternoon. They have a bus that takes them everywhere. I think once a week, they go to a special restaurant. They take them to plays at the high school.
The people that are in charge, if you go to them with an issue, they're on it. They don't ignore you. You call them and they get back to you. The food is so good."
