We toured American House Westland Joy. They have a service where you can hire extra help. The layout was good. It was clean. The staff who gave the tour was good. She did what she was supposed to do.

I toured American House Westland Joy. The staff was really friendly. They communicated as we were walking through with a lot of the residents. They knew their names, so that was nice. The facility itself was laid out nicely. It was very open and spacious. It was not confined, so that was nice. They had an exercise room. It would probably have been my first choice. The rooms were very big. The grounds were nice. It had a courtyard. There were a lot of trees, flowers, and stuff like that. I didn't see activities. It was near lunchtime, and there were a lot of people coming in for lunch. When we were walking through, they were all saying hi to the staff. I liked it.

Provider Response

Marella, thank you for taking the time to visit our community! We enjoyed meeting you and hope to welcome you home to American House!

I am/was a resident of this facility

I have moved into American House Westland Joy. The staff is awesome. The food is better than I expected. There's too much food, actually, for me. My apartment is a two-bedroom, and it's cute. I love it here. There's no gym, but there's plenty of fun activities. They don't just have bingo, but every Friday they have entertainment. It can be a comedian or it can be someone who's singing, and they're not just off the street. What I have heard so far has been pretty, pretty awesome. They're not professional, but pretty awesome. I love the community gatherings for entertainment. I haven't been able to go to many because I've had some illness, and I plan to get back down there and join the group. Everybody is so friendly and caring. It's great. I love it here. Right now, it's independent when I moved in, and since I've had this little problem, I'm going to be wearing a pendant, and that's $40 a month. If I have a problem, if I fall or if I just need something, then they will come up. Let's say I have fallen and they need to get me up, I push the pendant, and then there's a small fee for things that I need. It's very caring. I can't say enough good about the services, I really can't. They call it a pendant. I was totally independent when I moved in, but now that I have this problem and I'm going to have it for a couple of weeks, I'm going to use that service, and then I will let that service go. All the meals are included. The meals are really good. It's much better than what I expected. It takes them a while to get a maintenance man to do something because I think there's just one and he doesn't work on weekends, but somebody is always here to help. However, I really would like maintenance to be a little quicker. It's clean. It doesn't smell. There's always something going on. Every day there's something that they do, whether it's playing euchre, rummy or bingo, or just somebody playing the piano. Their activities are very good. They don't push you into doing things. You just take and pick what you want to do. I got a two-bedroom and a storage area, so I think I get good value. I got a beautiful view, I got a little balcony, and I got good neighbors on both sides. The value is good.

I like that American House Westland Joy has a large variety of activities and that the individuals are involved in them. Today, they went down for a small music concert and my mom has played bingo at least once and she enjoyed it. Both my mom and dad are in an apartment that has a full kitchen, two bedrooms, and a living room. As you walk in the door, you could see the residents in the main lobby socializing. I visited quite a few different facilities and some of their hallways would be empty, but not this one. There are people out and about and people are wanting to be out of their rooms. I think there's a good number of people who socialize in the public areas. Their staff has been very friendly, too.

I toured American House Westland Joy. The apartments that I saw were outdated. The carpets were dark; it wasn't the kind of place I wanted. I also did not see a gym. The person I talked to was pleasant and nice. If they could update the apartments, maybe I'll consider the place.

I toured American House Westland Joy. It was really nice and really clean and had friendly staff. Those were nice apartments and quite a bit of space. I could see other people having food in the dining room. I did not try the food. They do offer for you to come there and have a little lunch with them when you tour. We just didn't have time. The dining area was nice and had a lot of windows. It was bright.

My mother is in American House Westland Joy. It's a good place for independent living. They do meal delivery, which is very good, but other assistance is not very good. They're very nice people. She's supposed to be assisted living. I didn't know my mom would need more care because she was independent at her home. When I moved her there, I thought she would be able to get used to the place, but she can't find her way out of her room and down to the dining room, or activities or anything. She's kind of trapped in her room pretty much. My sister and I would come every day, but she wouldn't remember. I have all her meals delivered up to the door. They don't have somebody checking on people. She needs more like a babysitter-type person, and they don't have anything like that there. It isn't a good fit for her. It's a very good place for independent living, though, and they have nice activities. They have some assistance, i.e., you can pay for medicine or shower and that sort of thing, but mostly their people are all independent there. It just didn't work out for my mom. The staff is very nice. The food is good. Mom can't find her way down there, so they always come and knock on the door and say, "We're going to have bingo in another ten minutes" or whatever, and then she says, "OK, thank you." There isn't anybody to assist them down. If they had somebody to assist people, it would be better. We had trouble with a lot of different things. Right now, we can't regulate the heat in the room. It's 82 degrees in her room and I've been trying to call for the past month and get that straightened out, also the shower, and the leak in the kitchen, and all that. The elevators are no good. It's not as expensive as a lot of other places I've seen.

Provider Response

Kathy, thanks so much for your feedback! We appreciate you being open and honest with us.

American House Westland Joy seemed to be very personable. It would accommodate what we need pretty much. I like their activities, it was clean and well kept, and the staff was friendly. We had a nice tour and we were shown what were all the options. It was a positive experience. We looked at a studio apartment and a two-bedroom apartment. They didn't have any one-bedrooms available to show. They were accommodating. It was a reasonable size and livable. It seemed like it would be a good fit for what we're looking for. They had mentioned that they have a bus that takes them to certain places and they have various types of groups. If my friend decides to go on an independent living, it seems like it would be a good option. They have three meals a day available and they have 24-hour medical assistance. There would always be somebody around. They had the pull ropes in the rooms if you need an emergency. They had an area on each floor of the facility where you could get together like a living area or a group area where you could get together and talk to other people.

We went to American House Westland Joy. I liked the fact that they had just started opening the dining room again, but they had both one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments available. The clientele was wonderful, they were very friendly, and they were very willing to answer questions. I was pleased with it. I was impressed with it. They explained how they provide the meals, and they have on-site staff available to assist with showers. They have people come in and clean your place for you and do your laundry -- that kind of thing. They come out with menus. I was impressed with the atmosphere. They have a community room, they have aerobics one day a week, and they have a whole calendar that she gave me. I like that it had activities for everybody who wanted to join. The outside had sitting areas for people, and there were walking paths around the buildings so you could take walks. They had a vehicle where (before COVID) they were taking people to shops, grocery shopping, and that kind of thing, so that was convenient.

We are working with Patti from American House. We have taken our mother-in-law there. She likes it, so we know where we're going. The next step is to get her to agree on a start date. We love it and it is in a wooded area, so it gives her the feeling of still being up north. Patti is the manager there and she's wonderful to talk to. The apartments were nice and clean. What's nice about it is that it is easy to navigate through the building. We saw a schedule of activities and it looked enough to keep her active. They have a chapel, a nice menu, and transportation options for post Covid.

This community is very warm and welcoming. They go out of their way to involve the residents so they feel a part of the community. I feel very fortunate to have found this community for my parents. My dad died recently and they have done a great job helping my mom through the loss. The staff are truly the best.

I chose American House. We have to put down a deposit so that we are first in line. I like the staff, the rooms, and the facilities very much. There are a lot of similarities between all the communities, but the biggest thing for me was that it was light, airy, and didn't look depressing. I really like the friendliness of the staff. I thought this place was exceptional. I'm not that impressed with the food, but my mom is close enough to me that I feel like I can monitor the food more and she'll be eating meals at least once a week with us anyway. The one thing that really stood ot to me was that they are sponsored by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, so the symphony comes at least once a year and puts on a concert for the residents and go downtown to the Orchestra Hall. I thought that was extremely nice.

American House Westland Joy Senior Living was a very nice place. The people who I met were wonderful, especially the person at the front desk. She was a very nice person, and presented everything very nicely without being snotty. Their amenities and activities were fine. The rooms were nice and clean, but my husband felt there were way more women than men. The hallways were a bit narrow and the carpeting should be a lot cleaner. Some of the nurses aides and caregivers, when they walked down the hallway, didn’t look very friendly; they looked disgusted. You could see in their faces that they're not happy.

American House Westland Joy Senior Living is way more reasonably priced compared to other facilities. We have had a way better experience than when my parents were in another facility. They provide laundry service, cleaning, linens, and three meals a day.

We are comfortable and happy with American House. We have a nice apartment, it has been reconditioned, and next week, we will move our stuff in. I was very impressed with it, and they treated us well. We were given a free lunch, which was very good. Both my wife and I are a bit picky, and we both cleaned our plates. It was very good food, with vegetables, breads, and dessert. Everything was shown and explained to us. We had a very good feeling as we drove away from there, that this was the place. They refurbished it, and it’s really nice and clean, all the way from new carpeting, to repairing any marks on the wall. Everything was all repainted. I don’t think we are going to have any problem with the apartment itself. Everything was well good, and we were very satisfied. The dining room was spacious and clean. The table setting was very nice; if they continue being like that after we arrive, we will be very happy. There were a couple of older gentlemen that were outside the front door sitting in chairs with the nice weather, and they told me they have been very satisfied. They have been there for four years or longer. With all the help that we run into in the kitchen, they satisfied us and treated us well. Our touring guide -- who was the assistant manager -- went out of her way; she was so nice. She just made us feel so welcome. My wife is in a wheelchair, so I had asked for the apartment on the main floor, she had one, and that’s the one we are taking. It’s convenient to everything as far as her hair salon, laundry room, and the cafeteria. We have a sliding glass door to the outside, and it’s very secure. We have no fears at all so far.

My mother is at American House, and she loves it. We found that to be the perfect place for her. Her apartment is beautiful. She moved from her own personal apartment, and it's a shrunken version of her apartment, but not that much smaller. She loves the food. She is a little concerned about the staff in the dining room. They're not handy to pull out chairs or if she's trying to get attention for coffee or silverware. She's happy with the people who dump the trash everyday and the people who do her bed sheets. They have exercise, bible study, and fingernail painting, but she doesn't go down to a lot.

Provider Response

It's wonderful to hear that your mother is so happy at American House Westland Joy! The life enrichment director plans an entire program of social, cultural and education activities to keep residents active and engaged. If your mother has an idea of what she would like to do outside of her apartment, please let me know so we can see if we can add it to the program. Please contact me directly with any other questions! Sincerely, Tabitha Hooper (248) 854-7151

I wasn't as impressed with American House Westland Joy. It was a little older. The lobby was relatively small. They were starting to remodel the rooms off to the side. They just hadn't been completed yet. It was nothing negative or derogatory.

Thank you for leaving your feedback. Since you visited the American House Westland Joy community, many renovations have been completed: new carpet, paint, furniture, artwork and lighting. We also added a new patio and Anytime Cafe to the community. I would be happy to schedule another tour for you to see the many improvements. Please contact me to schedule another tour. I didn't care for American House Westland. To me, it was low-class. The rapport with the person who had given me the tour was just a matter-of-fact. She didn't try to win me in. Also she didn't know a lot of the answers to the questions that I had, so that was a turn-off. The set-up of the place was really small. I thought the rooms were small too. My father would have been in the memory care, but they had just opened it so they didn't have anybody in there. The staff was just OK, but they weren't necessarily friendly.

Provider Response

Thank you for your feedback! American House Senior Living Communities prides itself on providing a home-like setting to all residents, regardless of location or level of care. It’s unfortunate that you weren’t able to feel this ’sense of home’. It appears you toured American House Westland Venoy, but please do schedule a visit to American House Elmwood and American House Regent Street that specialize in memory care. We would like to help you and your father find a location that meets your needs. Please call me to discuss specific options.

Horrible!!! One of the residents was stuck in a pile of snow in a wheelchair for God knows how long today about 10 feet from the nursing home.He was barely dressed and not one person helped or knew he was gone until I took him back.

American House seemed to be very nice. The person who assisted me during my vistit was very friendly and informative. I didn't really give much attention to the activities they had there. Their rooms were nice and clean, though. We saw a one-bedroom and I liked it. It wasn't spacious but just adequate.

Provider Response

I'm glad you liked what you saw during your visit! Even though you may not have seen, we do offer plenty of activities and events for our residents! We have a Life Enrichment Director who organizes things like crafts, trips, and so much more (did you know we have our very own American House Choir?!). I'd be happy to fill you in on some of the activities we have coming up -- just call me or stop by when you have a moment.

The people at American House seemed to be professional. It's a facility that's real close to where I work and to my daughters, my mom's granddaughters. My mom is on a special diet, and it has taken a little while for them to get to know her and her eating habits, but it seems to be getting better. She likes to have a lot of fruits and vegetables. She's not a lot into the meats and the potatoes, and she tries to watch her consumption of breads. It has taken a little adjustment period for her and for them. They have quite a bit of activities inside the facility. They take them shopping or to a ball game. They have specific destinations that they go to. She hasn't participated yet because she has only been there a little over a month. She's operating independent because they're not doing anything besides just the real basic things that they offer them, like they do their bed linens once a week and they come in to take their garbage. Everybody seems pretty friendly and attentive. She has commented there was some staff she didn't care for. Some of the workers seemed to ignore some of the people. In anything that I've been involved with, they all seemed friendly and helpful. Overall, I'd say she really enjoys her apartment. It's a nice apartment, and it was upgraded nicely. It has not been a negative experience.

Provider Response

I'm thrilled to hear that your mom is enjoying herself in our community! That's our main goal here. Our residents love all our activities and trips (especially to ball games!), so I hope your mom joins in the fun soon. I'm glad the diet situation is working itself out -- if your mom ever needs anything or you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me personally and I'll do what I can to help.

I would recommend American House Westland Joy Senior Living. One of their best quality was the staff was very helpful and friendly. Also, it was comfortable and very clean. It wasn't sterile. It wasn't a hospital or nursing home setting. The apartments were very nice. They had activities for the residents. They had exercises and field trips. The exterior was very nice. The landscaping was amazing than most people had in their yards and that's the other reason why I liked that. Their price was okay. If you needed more service, then it would be more pricey.

Provider Response

Thank you so much, Kathy, for recommending us! And thank you for noticing our landscaping - we work hard and take pride in it. The services we offer are priced a la carte, so our residents can pick and choose what they want without having to pay for something they won't use. Your view of our community is spot on, and I really appreciate sharing your thoughts.

American House had new apartments for the handicapped. The apartment was nice enough but somebody forgot to do the bathroom door and I couldn't get through the bathroom door with my wheelchair. We had dinner there and it was fine but it certainly was not restaurant dining as they claimed. The place was at least clean.

Provider Response

Thanks for your feedback, Doris, and I will look into the bathroom door situation. We use the phrase "restaurant-style dining" to mean that we offer a variety of different options at meal times. If you'd like to come back, perhaps you would enjoy one of our other tasty meals! Please let me know if I can be of any assistance - my door is always open.

American House Westland Joy Senior Living is a beautiful assisted living facility. My great grandmother became a resident here 4 years ago and she wouldn't want to live anywhere else but here. The place is neat and tidy. In fact, I've already made arrangements for myself to live here when I retire. My great grandmother hasn't complained once ever since she became a resident. The staff is incredibly friendly and knows everyone by name. They work hard to ensure a fun and positive atmosphere. The building though not the newest but is well maintained. The layout of the whole facility is fairly simple as well, a plus for residents who may have memory and/or mobility issues. A large variety of programs keep residents entertained, from music to card games or bingo to art and crafts. Overall a nice looking place in a nice town with nice staff. Quality of food is incredible and variety of options is offered. The cooking area is also neat and tidy strictly following the hygienic standards. Brochures are available to gain first hand information about the prices which are surely cheaper than other facilities.
